One Way Jetstar Flights to Uluru (Ayer's Rock) from Melbourne $20, Sydney $21, Brisbane $21 + Fees (~$35) @ Webjet

255

I'm never too sure about Webjet as they always have these unannounced service fees that appear at the end. But I've clicked through and it still seems like a big bargain.

The advertised rates are $20-$21 from MEL/SYD/BNE to AYQ (Uluru/Alice Springs). However at the end, the service fees when I looked at a sample date added up to a total of $55.49. Which was still a great price, but it'd be nice if that was shown up front as it's not optional. This was the breakdown:

Just a PSA before people start flaming JQ in the comments.

Just be aware that you get what you pay for, this isnt a $1250 flexible Virgin Australia fare.

Good point. Should include the ontime/cancellation stats - latest ones are here: https://www.bitre.gov.au/statistics/aviation/otp_month

      • 8.1% cancellation…damn 601 flights cancelled

Qantas had 647 cancelled, but out of a far greater amount

      • Further broken down in https://www.bitre.gov.au/publications/ongoing/airline_on_tim…
Jetstar International has a far lower cancellation rate than Virgin Australia International
Jetstar has 6% of its cancellations on services where they have other flights operating that same day and can reaccommodate passengers automatically onto later flights, this also applies to Virgin Australia, Virgin Australia Regional, Virgin Australia International, Rex, Qantas and QantasLink

According to the detailed breakdown you provided, Jetstar (not Jetstar International) had:

          • 20.2% of flights cancelled on Adelaide-Sydney and 21% on Sydney-Adelaide
          • 18.3% of flights cancelled on the Melbourne-Brisbane route (17.9% going the other way), and only 51.7% of their remaining departures on time.
          • 13.3% of flights cancelled on the Melbourne-Sydney route
          • 14.5% on Perth-Melbourne and Melbourne-Perth routes

The on-time arrivals and departures for most major city pairs are mostly 50% at best.

Flying with Jetstar is a gamble.

How does this comply with ACCC display of total price rules?

  • +15

    Wait, ain't this illegal?
advertising for $20 and final price being $55?

  • +15

As per ACCC "Businesses must display a total price that includes taxes, duties and all unavoidable or pre-selected extra fees."

  • +3

One way is a bargain, but cheapest return from Brisbane I'm seeing is $229 including Webjet fees. Not a bad price but not a huge bargain either.

RE the advertised price, they do all have an asterisk next to it pointing to the small print at the bottom of the page which talks about the Webjet fees but I suspect that's probably still not kosher as far as the ACCC is concerned.

Return airfares the killer. No cheap way I can think of to get back…

  • +3

Webjet and their dodgy advertising/fees right at the end… yeah, nah.

great deal going there, 10x the amount hostage fee to get back :(

Since when did we start allowing advertising prices excluding the mandatory fees?

"Prices on this page are subject to change without notice, perform a search to view live pricing. Prices are inclusive of taxes and airline surcharges."

    No they are not.

For some reason the mods are ok with this too according to their response to my report. Makes zero sense when that mandatory fee can be included in sums of each total fare, simplifying the title in the process. It's not at all like a delivery fee or small surcharge.

I booked this, $23 ticket going one way to Uluru with webjet - worked out to be $40.50 pp with fees one way. Booked direct with Jetstar to come back to Sydnet for $89pp. So $130 return. Not too bad in my opinion. Ive flown Jetstar many times and only ever had one flight cancelled - they rescheduled us and paid for our hotel and transfers and meal for the night. Honestly thought their service was pretty good.

  • This is false advertising and unnecessary grammatical error in the title.

  • Not quite as advertised, but managed to get 2 adults and an infant for $114.50 with bags. So its a great deal even if shady advertising on WJ’s part - thanks OP!

  • Uluru is amazing, and Kata Juta. Highly recommended, and not just when you're retired.
