I’m looking into getting a PC Gaming Handheld. I know it’s newer and more $$ but is it best to get the ASUS ROG Ally?

    • Yeah for windows based

Had a talk this arvo with a JB Hi-Fi employee who bought one and he said that ROG is really great for non too taxing games like emulators since he loves playing old games with it.

Asked him for AAA games and he reckons that it may struggle even when on low settings. The ROG has 3 power settings and with the highest setting, the battery will last for 2hrs.

According to him, JB HI-FI will be the one and only brick n mortar store that can sell the unit here in the country.

Not really sure but I think he said that it will sell for 1299$ with 512GB capacity. He got it for a little over 1K and he can further get more staff discounts for friends and families.

So guys, if you know anyone at JB, it may be time to suck up to them. It's not here yet but it is coming soon to a store near you.

Why would you spend that much to emulate old games? Android is perfectly fine emulating anything up to a ps2.

If you wanted to play aaa titles at 60fps, the Ally or a 7840u unit would be your only bet really.

      • I’ve been watching some videos of people playing AAA games on the ROG Ally like TLOU Part 1, Fortnite, XBOX Gamepass Forza Horizon 5 etc and it seems to run them good

Also I heard it was time exclusive to JB selling the ROG

I own the ally. It's running cyberpunk, Hogwarts legacy, rdr2 with 40-50 fps 1080p low-medium settings. So no problem with AAA games.

        • Yep just getting those settings correct I guess is the way to go

        • +1

I’ve been getting a solid 40fps in rdr2 on the steam deck. Haven’t tried any higher, it feels like enough

        • Hi there, just inquiring about the Ally, considering picking one up later this year

Any specific problems that you've had with it? Did you get that MicroSD card overheating problem like with lots of other people?

          Cheers

      • I have an Ally and that’s mostly bs.

The performance is great even on demanding games. You don’t need to fork out $1300 for old games, there’s cheaper options. This device is designed for performance and it delivers pretty well.

He’s right about the battery though. If you’re playing on Turbo mode, it can go as low as an hour and a bit.

But many games run great on the 15W performance setting. So that’ll give you about two hours. Three with a 65W power bank.

Got my ROG on launch day. It does not struggle on AAA games at all, surprisingly.

Older games run amazingly. I've been playing Yakuza 3 maxed out and its butter smooth on the 120hz screen. Diablo 4 on medium runs very well also. Played Max Payne and GTA 5 on medium at 1080p, ran very nicely.

It actually runs D4 better than my 5900x / RTX 3080 pc.

On the downside, in no world are you getting close to 2 hours of battery life.

        • Small issue I have with GTA is that I have to keep setting it to 120hz every time I play. Keeps going back to 60 on the device and then you lose VRR it seems. Any tips?

          • @cnut: Unfortunately not - haven't had any hiccups.

        • Hi there, just inquiring about the Ally. Considering buying one later this year possibly

            @CrispyChrispy: Hi mate,

            No not really.

I've had maybe once or twice the left speaker going quiet in comparison to the right in specific games, but that is entirely a software issue and others have reported the same. A restart solves that, and when doing a speaker test the volume is the same on both sides.

I have not used a MicroSD card but plan to replace the SSD instead, so can't comment on this one.

No issues aside from the above, at all!

      • Did you befriend him?

    • +9

I've been doing a lot of reading on this myself, I think it comes down to the following

      Steam Deck Pros:
      Sleep/resume feature
Better battery life at lower wattage
Good compatibility with your steam library, non-steam games need some tweaking

      ROG ally Pros:
Much better screen (1080p 120hz, about 465 nits brightness, VRR) - compared with Steam Deck (800p 60hz, about 170 nits brightness, no VRR)
More powerful CPU/GPU can handle more recent games without slowdown (at the expense of battery life)
Fast charging (so the tradeoffs are worth it if you can stay plugged in)
Smaller footprint so easier to carry around (but some have complained of hand cramps, similar to the switch)

      • +4

        Steam also has better controls

      • Deck has 470-500 nits wtf? Ally has a much better screen tho

      • +3

I have both, and these are relatively correct main points.

Only points that aren't quite correct is sleep/resume feature does seem to work fine on windows/Ally, with the one game I have tried so far GTA 4.
This was a huge potential point of contention for me. its not quite as smooth on windows 11, as you have to sign back in first, but then it just seems to work.

Also the screen brightness isn't that actually different, but the steam deck can go lower

Honestly if you're only playing retro/older single player games the steam deck is a much nicer experience, windows is a pain to set everything up/installs & updates.
The higher resolution & power needed to drive it in the Ally is only worth it for modern bigger open world/large games

        • Hi there, I'm just inquiring about the Ally, I'm considering picking one up later this year possibly

Any specific problems that you've had with it? Did you get that MicroSD card overheating problem like with lots of other people? The Ally as a whole looks really attractive but if reliability is down the drain I'd consider the Deck over it.

          Many thanks :)

      • +1

I’ve got both of anyone has specific questions.

        • Might be an open-ended question, but which would you recommend?

          • +6

@newopolarfan1: Tough one. Over all probably the Ally because of being able to have all the launchers and play anything I throw at it.

Deck has no native Gamepass, so if you play a lot of Gamepass games, Ally is a better choice. I haven’t tried dual booting on it so can’t comment on how well Windows runs.

On the other hand, the Deck’s suspend mode and over all smoother experience (interface wise) is great. But if I had to keep one, I’d keep the Ally, even with some of the bugs it comes with. It’s just more powerful and acts exactly like a portable PC with a nice screen.

It still feels a little like I’m testing a beta product with some of the bugs. But all things considered, it’s been great for all the games I tried. And even for other things like Spotify or just surfing the web. They’re actively working on fixing stuff too, so much like the Deck, it will improve over time.

        • How do they compare with comfort on your hands?
Is the Ally a little more cramped feeling?
Did the steam decks colours feel washed out before you got the Ally?

          • +1

@crfnx: Marginally not as good as the SD. But haven’t had an issue with the Ally, like I would with the Switch for example.

There is a difference in how you hold them, but you adjust pretty easily.

I personally wasn’t really bothered by the SD screen like other people were, and that’s coming from an OLED Switch. Sure it could be better, but it works fine. And there’s software to bump the colours up a bit if required.

Ultimately it’s also a $700 odd device vs $1,300. Nearly twice the price for the Ally, so you put up with the Deck’s own quirks.

But being able to play games portable is amazing on either.

      • What about Proton and it's UI, isn't that a plus considering some games perform better with it?

    • +10

It's probably not the reason you're looking for, but I'd get a steam deck because it has linux and i want to support gaming on linux.

      • Yeah, not a reason that most care about but I certainly do. I would have waited for second gen SD otherwise most likely, although other than the screen not being amazing (although better with calibration) I'm quite happy with the deck.

  • +9

    Sleep/resume feature

    Underrated feature- pog as hell

come on 599 sweet spot! :D

      PM sent.

  • +3

Considering $399US is already about $590AU, this is a great deal. You're getting a lot of hardware for the money.

  • Is this the go for emulation / steam / xbox streaming or one of those other ones?>

    • For emulation, there are better devices thanks to size and battery life.

But for one stop machine, it's between this, rog ally, or a gpd max 2 with the 7640u or 7840u.

  • Any downsides with getting this over waiting for an official release? (if that ever happens)

    • Warranty through the reseller can be hit or miss.

    • Only that it would probably be nicer to deal direct with steam rather than an eBay seller in the event you need to make a warranty claim, but I don't have any experience with either, so who knows.

    • +4

Will never have an official release in Australia.

    • +1

Doubt Steam Deck will ever officially release here after Valve was fined by ACCC few years ago.

    • Ok so basically no warranty but do I lose any functionality or is it just all the same as any other deck?

  • Basically only +A$30 for non-plus & A$15 for Plus compared to 399 USD/GST.

Not a bad price, looks like the ROG Ally is creating competition.

  • Paid $800 from Kogan on Monday, rip

  • Apologies for my ignorance but can these play newly released games?

    • -1

if u wanna play those newer game i suggest to go for Rog Ally.. more powerful.. im playing d4 on it flawlessly

      • Hi there, just inquiring about the Ally, considering picking one up later this year

Any specific problems that you've had with it? Did you get that MicroSD card overheating problem like with lots of other people? The Ally as a whole looks really attractive but if reliability is down the drain I'd consider the Deck over it.

        • +1

So far no problem.. I have t been using the sd card tho.. my advice is don’t play triple A game on the SD card .. if u need more space just get a bigger hdd and swap it.. easily done. Other than that thing has been flawless..

    • +1

Yes. You’d have to play with the settings though and compromise on things in the more demanding games. But it’ll play em at 30fps+

    • Steam Deck compatibility website. https://www.steamdeck.com/en/verified

It tells you whether game will run or not. It will not however give you any metrics or benchmarks.

      • Every game I tried that was just “playable” actually worked just fine. So the list is much bigger than just the “verified” ones.

      • +2

There's also ProtonDB which is based on user reviews and can sometimes be more accurate than the official system.

  • Well, that expired quickly.

  • Would love one of these with a USB4/Thunderbolt port so I can plug it into an eGPU when at home. Maybe one day…

  • +1

    Thanks OP.

Ordered one late last night and also a Samsung PM991a 1TB from Aliexpress totalling $766.

So looking forward to the backlog of games I have yet to play and also to get on D4 asap.

Initially wanted the ROG Ally with hopes that it would also run Starfield down the track but it's just too much coin right now.

  • Anyone received theirs yet? I managed to buy one but auspost is taking ‘express’ real slow these days

    • I think my tracking was just messed up, it came today. For some reason though the security seal was broken and it seems like it’s been opened previously. Is there any way to check if its been tampered with?

  • Can anyone shed some light on how RTS games perform in the steam deck and are they playable? I specifically play Supreme Commander 2 and would love to play it from the couch. Do the track pads work well?
