  • I've been reading the internets and I'm still not sure if these are going to work alright daisychained for the coverage in the backyard (ie. 1st is the main, 2nd connects to the 1st one and 3rd connects to the 2nd one) or do the 2nd and 3rd have to connect directly to the 1st/main one.

The second option only seems typical for these routers and is quite limiting the possibilities. And useless to me, I need node(main)<->node(near)<->node(far), not node(near)->node(main)<-node(near).

Agree, I bought these 3 pack recently on Amazon for $219 and all nodes connect to the main node. You can't choose which node to connect to any other node. This is possible only on few selected models and there is not eta on the firmware update on these.
Fortunately for me I had an Ethernet port on the far end so used the Ethernet connectivity.
Apart from this limitation the network is solid…

      • That is incorrect, well at least on the current firmware.
Select the Unit, then you have a connection Preference Option.

This option is available in selected models of deco and it is not available in X20. I have been searching on the internet for this information from last 3 days.
I can't see this option on the lastest firmware of deco x20

          Supported models for connection preference

          Deco M5 1.6.1
          Deco M9 Plus 1.6.0
          Deco M4(V4) 1.1.0
          Deco X50(V1) 1.1.0
          Deco X55(V1) 1.1.0

          • @bargain crazy: Def on x20, I am running x20 1.1.0 Rel. 48243 and it has this feature, along with the VPN server.

            • @UltimateAI: This is really good news.
Someone my x20 was updated on Monday to version 1.0.7 Rel 36949 13042023.
So looks like mine is behind..
Did you get the rel 1.1.0 recently?
I will investigate this further .

My hardware sticker says - deco x20 (US) ver 3.0.
I bought it new from Amazon last week but it says US version!!
Could you check what label on your deco says? At the bottom..

Each node you can set a connection preference. Click the node, then under Preferred Deco, turn off Auto, then you then you select the other Deco to use as a Source, but it defaults to Auto (best signal)

  • This item is only available for pickup. The nearest stores for pickup for me are Casula and Penrith - too far.

  • Maybe the gurus of Ozbargain can help me, I'm after a system that can create a mesh with a ceiling mounted AP. What I'm hoping to get is a ceiling mounted AP upstairs (wired LAN) and one of these type of nodes for downstairs that will mesh with it (also wired LAN). Any such thing exist? Thanks!

Have a look at the ubiquiti range, or TP-link omada range

Any wireless access points will be "mesh" if you wire them all together.

      • +2

        That's not how mesh works

    TP-Link Deco X68 3 Pack AX3600 $390 @ ebay with code.

    • That is good price, could be its own post

  • "Includes VPN Server in the latest firmware" - which hardware version of x20 and the firmware has got this ? I am on V2 and cant see the VPN server option

  • My x20 has it and is running firmware 1.1.0

    • Interesting. I am having the X20 (US) ver2 and running 1.1.4 Build 20221115 Rel 78784. Have you got a different model Version to mine ? And where in the software you see the VPN server option ?

      • v4 sorry, no doubt it's coming soon for other versions, who would have thought so much difference between versions.
Apparently if you contact support, helps them prioritise features. v2 is supposedly a more powerful unit (before the chip shortages)

Today I added an x50 v1 to my x20 network and promoted it to main\router. This also has the VPN server.
I wanted an extra unit, but with 3 lan ports, that's why I went for the x50.

        https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/tp-link-de…
$167 from office works, seemed okay value.

        • Great thought and I was thinking the same. That price looks tempting !

  • Does anyone have any issues with MS Team calls (video and audio) ? Everything else works perfectly, but when I connect via VPN MS Teams calls it cuts of randomly every 5 mins or so. I had this issue and couldn't find any solution, had to replace with my old google nest routers. The issue is defs not VPN as the MS calls works fine after I swap the router

    • No, Wife and myself both WFH and constantly using VPN + Teams.

Now, don't rule out the VPN, most orgs will split-tunnel, break out teams from VPN as Teams isn't designed for VPN.
With the other router, your VPN may be using UDP which handles audio better but is less secure, the TP-Link unit may be blocking UDP forcing the VPN to be established via TCP. This is often an issue for Palo Alto.

What Modem Modem do you have?
      What VPN client is this?
By teams Audio, do you mean Teams to Teams or Teams to Telephony? Different ports\protocols.

You may need to enable SIP ALG and\or UPNP.
      Under Advanced -> NAT Forwarding
