Actually depends on what knife you have. If you have a global or somewhat on the softer steel side (sub 60 HRC), this would be pretty good.
If you have a much harder (say carbon steel or 62 HRC) would suggest going with one of the more expensive stones like the naniwa chosera or equivalent shapton. This one will take much longer to sharpen the harder HRC knives. It just won't cut it (pun intended)
Yeah that's a good point, i'm looking to get a Victorinox Fibrox in the near future i.e /r/chefknives starter pack, which I believe are just under 60HRC so maybe I should just grab one of these. I did read that these need a lot more flattening and are arguably not as easy to use, but I can't speak from experience.
Whats taking you so long with grabbing a Fibrox? Theyre excellent value and great knives without spending over $50. Highly recommend.
e: theyve gone up in price so much…
@ATangk: Dunno, our knives are usable enough so it’s been put on the back burner.. ended up grabbing one last night for 40 bucks after an eBay plus discount!
Just saw the deal on the Shapton pro, $42.57 is a great price. I already have King sharpener so I'd personally go for the shapton as it is a more durable stone and apparently less likely to dish.
If it was your first stone then maybe go with the King as you also get the harder polishing stone and for $32 it is a very affordable stone to learn on.
Personally I'd still consider myself a beginner with sharpening, r/sharpening on reddit is a great place to go for these types of questions.
Any recommendations on a leather strop? I've been flooded with sharpening videos and successfully influenced.
I ended up purchasing some leather offcuts from ebay. That seemed to be the most affordable way to go.
Yeah agreed re: reddit, that's where I ultimately heard about both the Shapton and the King 1000 + the one in OP's post.
Where are you seeing the Shapton for 42? Is that the one from Japan? If so, there's an additional 20 something worth of shipping costs on top of that.

Showing for me as $42.57 with free international delivery from Amazon Japan (with Prime)
@viperxz: Oh nice, I was under the impression international mostly didn't offer free delivery even with prime (not a huge amazon user). May have to grab my partners amazon prime login and grab the Shapton then.. Thanks mate.
I have both SP1K and this king combo (and other stones). I like both, but there's more to it than apple vs mandarin. Whichever fruit, it has to be flat to be effective. Problem is: The shapton runs around "stone flatteners" other than diamond, the king otoh is a soaker and it will load up and dish just by looking at it but easier to flatten.
This arvo my heart sank when a desk lamp fell on top of my knife rack :( … luckily the takohiki took one for the team and copped a few centimetres of folded edge. Normally I would have wet the whole rig, but I remembered this deal, so I challenged myself to fix it with just the king. Guess what? I fixed it in a jiffy, thanks to the "legacy" 6K for working the ura (the concave backside of a single bevel knife). Sharpening single bevel is another bag of hurt, but I did it anyway… (except for the kasumi but let's not go there). This doesn't mean that I prefer the combo stone, the 6K side is generally useless in this world teeming with fibroxes and whatnots, while I still reel from buying the atoma years ago, which can't be used for anything else than flattening other stones for unnecessary wear.
TLDR; while it's nice to have affordable splash and go, please take its maintenance into account. Yes, kitchen knives don't require perfectly flat whetstones, but sharp tools (plane blade, chisel, etc) and single bevel knives, need something really flat i.e. mandoline blade. You'd need at least a sandpaper subscription. Thanks for coming to my ted talk….
Was about to check out and saw "Usually dispatched within 4 to 6 weeks". Wonder if that's accurate
They always say that
oh how interesting. do you know roughly how long it would take to ship?
I bought mine from previous deal and they didn’t ship it yet.
@OZBholic: that was like 3 weeks ago? Guess the warning about 4-6 week dispatch time is accurate haha
@debitbankcharges: Yes bought on 28th May.. I guess will need to wait that long.. last time i had to wait for a purchase for about 2 months from Amazon US due to a delay. Amazon AU customer service said there is not much they can do as it’s considered as a seperate seller and suggested I could cancel. I didn’t cancel however Amazon AU issued me a $20 gift voucher (purchase value was about $450)
@OZBholic: Just purchased. Mine said it will arrive tomorrow, or are they being cheeky?
@OZBholic: guess i'm rolling the dice :D
I've owned this previously and can recommend it.
I should probably buy it seeing as my purchase of this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/741784 from 7 months ago still hasn't been delivered with continued "we're encountering delays" emails from Amazon.
Is it sold out? $55 for me
Content modified. Try now
Great! Works now. The seller has changed and now its showing up at $32. Thanks
Dammit! Didn't even notice the price change.
Any videos people can recommend using this for a rookie?
People better be careful if they ever try to break into an OzBargainer's home. That is unless they get access via the kitchen first.
I just have stamped Victorinox knives but theyre dull as. Is this something I should get?
I have this, excellent combo set
Deal over? Showing up as $40.16 for me
I have the Global 2 stage water sharpener that kind of just guides your knife, but the cleaver doesn't fit. How hard is it to learn to use a proper one like this?
Should I get a whetstone for my IKEA knives or just throw them out and buy new ones?
Grab a Victorinox Fibrox chefs knife instead.
Arrived today! No guide inside. Any vid or tutorials on best way to use these?
I personally didn't learn from youtube, but many successfully did with Jon's instructions…

Better going with this vs spending more for the Shapton 1000?
