I swear the first comment on an ozbargain deal is like open mic night at a comedy club where the opening spot is always taken by a nervous first timer who almost never sticks the landing.

      • everyone's a comedian, especially when its condom deal time! lifetime supply LOL!!!

      • +2

Absolutely accurate. 100%. But imagine if it wasn't like that. We are a unique group. There are months where I click on ozbargain for the wit of you guys, moreso than the bargains. It's possible I'm unwell though.

        • There's bargains but no wit at CheapCHeapLah

      • Meh, open mic its easier to read the room. If you don't like hit-and-miss, just watch a Netflix standup act, where every joke has been tested and honed over months of touring, before you saw it.

This is a boring deal - same price as the normal generic benzalkonium chloride in your local supermarket.
Don't we all associate the Canesten brand with Clotrimazole?
And if thrush isn't funny as hell, well then mea culpa.

      • wait until there is a Spam deal. Mods love it

  • +9

The active ingredients is benzalkonium chloride that is what makes any plain disinfectant sold on supermarkets at very lower price, so you don't need for this expensive version to go on sale and still costing so much more.

    • Suggested product?

        • But it's more expensive, $4.50/L, than OP's $3.58/L.

          • +1

@O O: Are you looking at the correct product? For me, stickyfingers link goes to "Coles Disinfectant Lavender | 2L", which is $1.40, or $0.70/L, way cheaper.

Maybe your local Coles doesn't stock it, and you're seeing a substituted product.

        • How is that one so cheap??

        • +1

          Regarding Benzalkonium Chloride:

Canestan has 70g/L on the label.

          Coles has "1% W/V".

          Canestan has more per L?

    • There was a cheap Woolies disinfectant with benzalkonium chloride I used to get but it disappeared and I can't find anything else.

This is the closest I can find at Woolies online but it's labelled as laundry sanitiser so the price is double. $4.50 a liter. This deal is cheaper.

Is a “disinfectant laundry sanitiser” really needed over regular laundry detergent? First time hearing about these products..

    • No

    • +1

It's like washing your hand with soap. You can't see the bacterias dying nor hear them scream. You just have to trust it that your hands are cleaner using them. Some people might argue that hand soap is not needed, but who are we to disagree?

    • +4

If someone in your family has a fungal infection, like athlete's foot or jock itch, it might spread through contact between items of clothing while in your laundry basket, or perhaps through the water in the washing machine.

      • +1

Yeh i need this stuff because all members of our family do some type of martial arts… Grappling is the worst for these infections!

  • +1

Smells great, not sure about disinfection

    I paid $6.90 (S&S) 13 Oct 2020 for any inflation calculating people!

    • Was that 1L or 2L?

Woolies generic version (eucalyptus not lemon)
    https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/0000000000…

If you can't wait for sale again.

Might be wise to make sure the active ingredient benzalkonium chloride suits your skin before stocking up.

    • What do you mean suits your skin? Is there a residue left behind?

Awesome tip on the Woolies generic, same concentration and I prefer eucalyptus!

      • @Kammi

There shouldn't be enough residue after the full cycle has run, in saying that it only gets released in rinse cycle.

        Benzalkonium Chloride gets a mention
by some dermatologists as a product to be cautious with.

      • Buy some eucalypt oil and spike it yourself

        • +1

          That stuff is $$$$/L

          • @Kammi: It's one of the cheaper essential oils and you need only 1 or 2 capfuls per laundry

  • +6

When I see the name Canestan I assume it contains an antifungal like Clotrimazole. It doesn't. This is simple standard disinfectant, benzalkonium chloride. Purchase the equivalent at Aldi and save. Also these products don't neutralize body odour, which is caused by short chain fatty acids (like 3-methyl-2-hexenoic acid); they just prevent more of these substances from being produces

    • What to use on clothes to get rid of body odour?

        • +1

          Weak.

      • Proper amount of detergent, proper cycle and temp, and scent boosters.

        • +1

          what's proper temp? scent boosters?

      • +2

Substitute fabric softener for eucalyptus oil (it has deodorising properties).

      • For sweat smell I realised that washing my t-shirts in cold water is much better than warm water

        • do you mean 30 celsius or even colder? I get a musty smell sometimes with tshirts

          • @fredblogs: Flat cold, liquid detergent cause powder wouldn't dissolve

    • which one at aldi ?

      • @Thaal Sinestro
The cheaper BAC disinfectant at Aldi was 1.25L for a dollar something..
Looks like that Coles one someone linked above is even cheaper apparently

  • Thanks. Bought 4. Should last me a few years.

  • These feel like a scam in the same way that fabric softener is a scam.

    • +1

      Yeah, and soap.

      I just roll in sand.

    • How is fabric softener is a scam? Partner smells great using it.

      • +3

Fabric softener is hydrophobic, so it doesn’t absorb moisture. Terrible for towels, can irritate skin and can also leave reside on clothing.

        • Genuine question, so you only use detergent without softener? Thanks

        • Fabric softener is hydrophobic

Surely that's a requirement for it to work? If it liked water, it would stay in the rinse water instead of "sticking" to your washing.

          so it doesn’t absorb moisture

I've never noticed any difference to the absorbency of my towels on the occasions when I've run out of fabric conditioner.

      • +4

        Can clog up your machine

        • That's true for anything you put in your machine.

Powder, softener, a stray sock. Endless possibilities for "Can clog up your machine".

The last time I had issues with a clogged washer was in an overcrowded sharehouse where nobody cared about maintaining (ie. cleaning) the device.

        • +1

Pulled apart a mates washine machine to replace the bearings. I couldn't believe the amount of gunk and buildup on the outside of the bowl! He was a regular softner user up until the moment he saw the scum buildup.

  • +1

Cheers OP, I don't necessarily use these but it'll make my partner happy so win 😂

    • Your partner gets turned on when you buy laundry sanitiser?

      • Well, I turned on just browsing on ozb, more even when clicking "buy now" on the cart….

But once the payment withdrawn from the bank, I turned off immediately…

I guess everyone appetite is different…

      • It's the bottle, bro. The bottle.

  • +2

Thanks, ordered 3. I use it when washing bed sheets to fight off germs & bacterias. Especially in winter where they don't get washed enough.

    • -1

I get that this can 'fight off germs & bacterias', but does it matter if you don't use it as we don't live in a sterile environment.

Wash in hot water and hang outside (or in a hot dryer) will get it plenty clean unless you're suffering serious illness.

      • +1

There are many items that are not to be put in dryer and the sun not always shine. You don’t need to be seriously ill to use. There are many cases where it needs.
Do you wash hands with soap or just waving it around in the sun?
Look, I’m not convincing anyone to use. If you don’t need to use it, don’t bother. But there are people who finds it necessary for their family. Don’t be too quick to judge.

        • +2

          fair call.

"Do you wash hands with soap or just waving it around in the sun?"

I wash my hands with soap AND then wave it around in the sun ;)

I wash my laundry with powder detergent AND then wave it around in the sun to dry.

    • -1

      60 degree water kills everything

      • +3

        Including elastics

        • Sheets elastics are fine at 60°, maybe not underwear I agree

      • Choice did a test and at 60 degrees, most tardigrades survived.

        • -1

          Whatever man

        • +1

Tardigrades survive space and worse innnit

  • +1

    Thanks OP. Ordered many bottles~

Suspect we'll go through quite a bit laundering the soon to be never ending pile of cloth nappies >.>

    • May I ask why you would put yourself through the torture of cloth nappies?

      • +2

Yeaaaaaah, we know it's going to be a 'bit' more work having to clean them. But we want to try and do our bit to reduce the amount of @#$@# (literally in this case) which goes to landfill.

How long we'll last? Who knows.

        • Maybe compostable/biodegrade ones exist too?

      • -4

        Tree huggers

  • I don't really see the point of this product.

My wife made me buy it when we had newborns to make sure the laundry was perfectly germ free… but does it really matter for the average household?

Hanging clothes outside where UV rays can kill bacteria (and dry the clothes) for free is better IMO.

    • Marketing

    • +1

Most bacteria die when dried out, but UV doesn't penetrate all the way through your clothes.

Don't forget fungal infections, see my post above. When dried out, fungi revert to spore form, which can be extremely resilient. When the pyramids of Egypt were opened after thousands of years of being dry and sealed-off, it is believed that many of the Egyptologists were infected by fungal spores that had been dormant for thousands of years.

      • +1

Egyptologists were infected by fungal spores that had been dormant for thousands of years.

        They died

always precede spoilers with "spoiler alert" please.

          • @andresampras: lol - I thought once it got typed up on wiki then the alert was no longer required ??

    • Good for heavily soiled clothes (sportswear, gym wear, trade-wear) and bedding material that does not get cleaned regularly. It is not required for every day clothes washing.

  • On special at Woolies for the same price for local pick up if in-stock;

    Regarding Benzalkonium Chloride content:

Canestan ($7.16/2L) has 70g/L on the label.

    Coles ($1.40/2L) has "1% W/V".

    Canestan has more per L?

This does nothing soap and water can't do.
