  • How do I get the new user allowance you refer to?

  • +7

(profanity) that’s cheap. Possible to replace lamp?

  • +13

love the BS 9000 lumen advertising, when it is only actually 200.

    • +2

The bulb is supposedly 9000 lumen, which may be only a modest exaggeration for a 75W power consumption.

Is 200 the ANSI lumens? I would have expected more like 500, which is OK.

      • +1

According to the links in the OP it's 270

  • Who has one and how bad/good is it?

    • +14

I bought one off the last deal. It is surprisingly good given the price. The audio is shit but you can use a bluetooth speaker. It has limited keystone correction (and only vertical) so you have to place the projector well. The weirdest thing is that the lens came extremely dirty and has been really hard to clean (alcohol wipes etc…) Obviously not a particularly clean factory. But I don't regret the purchase at all. Looks good on a wall. Will get around to putting up a screen at some point.

      • +1

I had the same issue. I noticed on dark screens some fluff coming up white, and when I looked inside I could see what appeared to be some dust particles and almost a fingerprint smear.

The pictures been fine besides noticeable on really dark screens, but I've not been game enough to dig into the new projector to clean the lenses as it's inside where it's dirty.

Did you take out and clean the inside lenses?

        • +1

I haven't taken it apart at all. It had some kind of sticky gel on the front of the lens in which dust was getting caught. Easy enough to clean this off the center, but there is a lot if it along the edge, and its hard to clean this without spreading it into the middle. Definitely the included microfibre was not up to the job.

      • Is it possible to project to the ceiling for lie down movies?

Looking for a gift for my daughter & BF. Needs BT & wifi to connect to various peripherals.

Thanks for your previous info- what OzB should be about!

        • I can't see why not. But the vent is at the back, so you'd have to find a way of propping it up and stopping it overheating.

      • What is your use case? Just for main television?

        • Films (at night, reasonably dark room, but haven't bothered to close blinds or anything)

    • +10

      I have this projector. I paid ~ $86 USD.

The projector picture itself is great for the price so long as you have a dark-ish room. I'm projecting just on a white painted wall, and my image would have close to a 2m diagonal. It is very good for netflix/youtube type content. I have an Apple TV connected to it, and have also used a cheap amazon firestick with it. Casting from phone to ATV and out on the projector is great.

I would not recommend the projector though for use-cases where you need super sharp detail - such that, don't try and use it is as some giant PC monitor.

My only gripe, and mentioned here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/769968, is that I can hear a high pitch buzzing noise from the rear of the projector when it is in standby. Such that, when powered from the wall, but not actually projecting. It is quite noticeable in a silent room from a metre or so away. Others don't appear to have experienced this, so maybe I got unlucky.

I've submitted a video on the noise with banggood, and the seller has offered me $25 USD credit . I would prefer to get to the bottom of where the noise is coming from.
It could be transformer, or LED.

All in all - it is great for what it is - but who knows what type of longevity we will get, and how long the LED will last, and whether the LED will lose much in the way of lumens.

      • +4

I recomend buying a "smart" plug than, will help solve this, just turn it off via the plug everytime remotely via a google home/app

        • Yeah - definitely an option. Just a little annoying once you hear it.

      • +2

How loud are the fans when it's running? I got a Blitzwolf VP6 and the fans were distractingly noisy. I even went to the trouble of replacing one of the internal fans with a nicer computer fan which helped a lot, but not quite enough for my liking.

        • +1

Do you have the fan model you used?. I have the VP6 "hairdryer" too

          • +1

@Alpine58: I installed a be quiet! Pure wings 2 90mm Fan as the outlet fan. However, there was some complication - I can't remember what exactly - I suspect the voltage of the fans were different so I may have had to install a step down converter in between. But again it was a few years ago and I can't remember for sure. I just remember something about the install was a PITA.

There's an inlet blower fan as well, but I didn't change that because I couldn't find one from a reputable brand. Although now Amazon stocks some with some good reviews. It's something like this: https://www.amazon.com.au/UTUO-Brushless-Bearing-Centrifugal…

        • +1

Yeah it is definitely loud and very noticeable when it powers on - though you don't generally notice it once audio is coming out of the speaker.
Probably just as loud as your VP6 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itbMP4-mfrU

  • Bought one at USD$96 yesterday and has already shipped today

  • Can you connect an external speaker upto one of these for better sound?

    • +5

It has a 3.5mm audio out and Bluetooth to connect wirelessly to speakers/headphones

      • Is the sound synced up OK using Bluetooth?

  • +1

For the price I’m very happy with it, especially once paired with Bluetooth speakers and nvidea shield.

  • +1

Are these suitable to be ceiling mounted? I'm thinking of mounting it on a garage ceiling and projecting onto a large white wall.

    • The image can be flipped for ceiling mounted. Just beware of the limited Keystone and it can only scale down the image, so needs to be placed appropriately

    • +3

Not really worth mounting a cheap toy like this.

These are amazing for the price, but if your going to go to the trouble/expense of installing it, just invest in an $800 BenQ or Epson thats good enough to watch regularly and not just a fun gimmick that won't last long.

It's a much bigger difference in quality than, say, cheap LED TV vs top end OLED TV.

      • +3

I mounted mine and I'm very happy with it. One day I'll replace it with something better and the mount will be reused. At least this meant I didn't need to spend more on a better projector for now.

      • +5

        Agree with this.

You are far better off picking up a cheapie from FB marketplace. People offload projectors all the time now, due to the cheapness of LCD panels.

I picked up an Acer 1080p projector off marketplace for $40 a few weeks back, and another an Epson UST (SD) for $50.

Lamps for popular projector manufacturers can usually be found for a fraction of genuine, from AliExpress.

  • If it projects from a 2.5 to 3m distance to a white wall, how large (how many inch) the output screen will be? Thanks

    • +8

      The guide says:

      50" == 1.55m

      70" == 2.17m

      100" == 3.10m

      120" == 3.72m

      (Can also infer that 170" == 4.80m)

  • How far away does one need to place this to get a 3m picture

  • Is the a similar wifi model you would suggest? Is it better with wifi?

    • +3

I wouldn't imagine anything at this pricepoint would also be decently speced to support much built in, external Chromecast or firestick would solve most missing features?

    • +1

This has WiFi, BlitzWolf BW-VP13 US$122.98 (~A$182.81) with coupon BGAUH184

      • Is that the main difference? I'm happy to pay a bit more for image quality but the specs for both seem almost identical?

    • +9

Most cheap projectors have an absolute garbage internal OS. Best bet is to plug in a firestick/ chromecast & use that for any wifi/streaming, you will get a FAR better experience.

  • interested…. but is this what you guys got for ETA or is it now on raincheck?

Ehh just went the OzBargain way and ordered one why not.

  • i have been using an old no name 720p lamp (not LED) projector for near 10 years, got off gumtree for $20.

has served well for 100s, probably 1000's, of hours of outdoor movies/sports events etc

it now has a few dead pixels and over the past weeks or two have been thinking about replacing with a ~$1K Epson EH-TW5600 / BenQ TH685P or similar (i dont know a lot about projectors at all TBH, and only spent 1-2 hours googling)

only really care about 1080p at this point in time as i got a bunch of favourites on bluray and TB of 1080 content on plex server.

i dont know much about these cheap LED units… how much worse are they compared to lower tier Epson / Benq etc?

    • +5

I'd suggest looking up reviews from the model or two before the BW-V5 and see if anyone has posted follow-up comments to state how it has faired after a year or two.

This BW-V5 is cheaper than a bulb from your old school projectors, and probably uses a lot less electricity as well.

In my case, watching streamed movies and videos on this projector from about 4m or so back projected to a 2m diagonal, I'm not in the slightest bit thinking about the picture quality whilst the media plays; the picture is that good (and maybe my eyesight is average). I'm sure a videophile though could probably find a myriad of visual faults and imperfections compared to some $2000 laser setup. Coming from a 50' plasma though, this little projector is great.

      • +1

thanks for taking the time to comment mate…thats a pretty good endorsement.

it came up under $130 for me so bought it to test it out and see for myself.

as an aside, what do you mean by "back projected"?

        • missing comma -

sitting from 4m or so back, projected to a 2m diagonal

          • @mshanann: haha , makes perfect sense

thought perhaps you knocked a hole in the wall to the next room so you could rear project your $100 device

        • have you used it yet, how is it?

    • +1

They are amazing for the price, but no, still toys, not in the same ballpark as low end real projectors like Epson or BenQ.

      Difference is night and day.

      • yep understand you get what you pay for…lacking features contrast brightness etc.

but how close do you reckon they compare though for use in fully dark room after being calibrated?

i mean they are native 1080p and appear to have decent smoothness/ refresh rate 60hz ?

ignor minor things like corner roundness, washed out a bit at edges etc - ie if you are just being critical of the main field of vision in any given film, not the peripheral sort of thing

        • +1

Nah, fully dark room is just what you need to even see the picture. It won't bring this anywhere near what a second-hand brand-name projector that costs the same can do.

There's more to image quality than resolution. Colour depth/range is just as important. Even the cheapest junk TV or laptop screen won't prepare you for how poor the image is on one of these.

People are happy because it's only $140 brand new, not because it comes close to competing with a real projector (which costs closer to a grand brand new).

If you don't mind it breaking in less than a year or two, and just want to try it for some fun, it's a good option.

If you've always wanted a cinematic experience at home, don't waste money on this toy, do your homework and get a real one. Second hand is often great value (you can get 3rd party replacement lamp bulbs for less than $50, makes most projectors good as new).

          • @ItsMeAgro: thanks for comments…curious if you had a look at the Jayce Ooi review OP linked?

maybe hes a paid shill but he does illustrate a good argument for this particular model…

  • Naive question - if you have a 75 inch tv, do you need this? How big of a difference it is between the experiences of both as far as indoor watching goes?

    • +5

It is only good for a dark room. It won't be good during the day in any type of lit room. The type of device you setup in a budget man cave - or take with you on holidays to get the kids to leave you alone.

      • What about using it in the bedroom for the occasional movie or kids using it to play minecraft ??

Currently have a TCL C715 which is meh and seems to do the job. We don’t use the TV often.

    • +1

A real projector does beat a TV. It's not as bright or real-feeling as an OLED (that costs triple the price), but the size will be more important in some cases.

This is not a real projector. This is a cheap toy, impressive for the price, but not something you'd end up watching instead of a TV.

      • +1

How long did you use yours before you upgraded to a real projector? What were the main improvements when you did?

  • +2

There is surely no way that dinky little thing has 9,000 lumens.

    • Its lumens vs ANSI lumens. A commenter above noted it’s about 270 ANSI lumens, which isn’t great but it typical for these high res low light cheapo projectors

  • Does this have to run off 240v? The camping advertising makes me think battery power might be possible. Unless they're camping with a long extension cord

    • +1

Or an inverter. 75w is feasible with a cheap inverter.

  • I’ll give it a shot lol. Is it worth getting the insurance?

    • +5

Not worth it, paying with PayPal is sufficient.

  • -6

Wow they make single-use cheap projectors now.

  • BGAUK82 seems to have run out. First 100 orders it seems. Also has a button for 15-20% off for new user, cannot use.

Thanks for the post, but best price I can get is $144.78

    • Try this code from previous deal that worked for me however not sure if it's the same discount - BG7e79e3

    • +1

Coupon extended for another 100 units.

      • +1

        Hey nice work!

  • +6

We have one of these and find it great. Even at the low wattage it always suprises me how well it works (but it does have to be dark).

We took it while travelling - have a very fond memory of watching Red Dog in an Alice Springs caravan park, sitting under the stars and projecting it onto the back fence and having aroud 30 people watching. Defintiely need an external speaker for open spaces

Anyone have any recommendations for cheaper tripod style projector screens please?

  • Did anyone else’s bank account take out a slightly higher amount than the converted USD card rate? (Using a forex conversion fee-free card).

    • did you get charged a foreign transaction conversation rate thing?

      • Ahh I think I may have used PayPal’s conversion rate, d’oh 😩. An extra $5 Oof!

  • Willing to spend around $200, should I get the BlitzWolf BW-VP13 instead?

  • how is this compare to those on Amazon around the same price/cheaper?

    • You really have to find a review from an actual projector expert for each model you're considering.

Some are good enough to watch occasionally, like this one, but most in this price range are scam products with outright lies in the specs (e.g. it says 4k and 9000 lumens, but it's 540p and 200 lumens) and image quality MUCH worse than a budget Android phone screen, so loud you can't hear the movie, stuck pixels, etc.

  • +1

Got one, don't know what am gonna do with this 🤷
    Was $143 for me
    Thanks OP

  • +2

Received mine today. Excellent for the price

    • Same. Damn I’m impressed. Setup in the bedroom at the blinds, kids having a great time at the movies. Even with a light on in the en-suite still perfectly fine.

      No frills, works.

  • Got mine today, big crack in the screen. Let's see what the return/replace policy is like I guess. Very dissapointed,

  • Mine has heaps of defects on the lcd that show up on projection. Customer support has offered $40 usd refund. Take it or go for replacement? Not sure whose responsible for return shipping though.

    • Is that dust on or behind the lens?

  • i have two cheap projectors, looks like the remotes are all from same factory

  • i found this one pretty good ,native 1080p, now only $107.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0B28G5Y4R

with amazon, you have return and warranty in confidence.

  • Worked well for a day, then the whites started to blur towards the center of the frame. Also have some of the white dots when the screen is dark. Would be a good projector otherwise :(

  • I have the same white dots when screen is dark issue. Will probably just get a partial refund if they offer it rather than sending it back. Seems like a common issue.

    • They just sent me a video showing how to clean the dust out. No offer of partial refund. Hope you have better luck.

      • @FlowerJam - Can you post the link? Did it work?
