[ACT] Free Entry to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve @ ACT Parks and Conservation Service

1060

The Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve visitors centre is closed indefinitely due to building maintenance issues. Until that’s resolved, there’s no entry fees to the reserve. A great family day out.

Although a temporary visitor’s centre is now open, entry fees are not being taken until further notice.

Why is the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex closed ?

    • +4

I was hoping it was because of aliens, but it isn't:

      Why are we closed?

TL,DR: The cafe shut down over Covid, and they don't have enough funding to employ staff to run the visitor's centre. Presumably the rent paid by the cafe covered that.

You could still visit Honeysuckle Creek; there's not much there now (it was decommissioned in the 80s) but it's where the transmission of Neil Armstrong's first steps on the Moon was received and rebroadcast.

It was open last year when the cafe was still closed.

          So it's aliens then?

            @jong: I think it's Russian hackers.

Used to go here a fair bit when I lived in Canberra. Was great,.awesome playground for the kids and many nice spots for a bbq.

  • Is this the place where you can spot koalas?

There is a walk being refurbished.

We did the Sanctuary walk on the weekend and saw 5 bandicoots. They seem to be very tame around people

  • How much is it usually?

Fantastic place. Well worth a visit, especially at this price :D

It blows my mind that some states charge entry fees to public parks.

    • +9

They do lots of upkeep at this one so it's justified I reckon

      • +1

QLD doesn’t charge any fees and manage to maintain their parks.

        Guess it’s all about priorities.

        • +1

This isn't really a "park" per se, it's like a huge series of hiking tracks and trails. You also need to pay in a lot of alpine regions of Australia, not just the act.

You def need to pay the rangers to drive on a lot of islands and things in Queensland too so idk what your talking about.

    • +1

How do you think they pay for the maintenance?

      • +4

The bloody rates…ridiculously expensive here in the ACT

        • Rates contribute but almost every government (federal, state, local) also needs to borrow money and/or charge users as taxes/rates are generally not enough to cover every single public service. Sure make parks free and funded from taxes but then oops no more money to fund schools/roads/whatever else

      • -2

How do you think they pay for the maintenance?

The same why the states/territories pay for any of their other expenses, using their share of the GST collected by the federal government and distributed to each of the states/territories.

Do they not teach how our system of government works in schools anymore?

        • +2

They could use 100% tax money but there is more going on at this place than a bbq and a bench.

I think the facilities warrants an entry fee, and then it's not just ACT taxpayers that are paying for it but also everyone who visits - overseas and interstate.

        • Why do you think governments all around the world including Australia borrow money? Because taxes are not enough to pay for every single public service. Did they not teach you that in school?

          Poor naive soul

    • Makes sense in small places with lots of tourists, like Tassie. They can't afford schools and hospitals as it is, so the heavily visited parks should pay for their own upkeep.

    • Some states? Only Victoria does not charge fees.

    Tidbinbilla is the GOAT.

    PS no actual goats.

It is free. Right now. Has been for months. Off you go - visit right now to show THEM you won't be oppressed by THEIR AGENDA. That'll show 'em.

Typical attempt of cheap political correction and justification. You are a descendant of brits?

Oh, I get your username now. You're a troll, and you're ALSO a bender. Makes sense!
