Travelling with Qantas from Brisbane is just horrible. With transfer between Brisbane to Sydney and Qantas service.
My last March flight was kept delaying from Seoul and finally pushed to cancelled after 4 hours of waiting (1 hours inside plane).

    • +1

100%. Just pay a little more and fly Korean Air with no stopover.

    • -8

So you would have preferred they departed with a broken plane?

      • +1

Yep, that's totally what they said. Good one!

      • Funny since Korean Air is considered much better than quantas, globally.
Tell us you only been to Bali without telling us

    • +2

Korean Air had a recent sale to Seoul, direct from BNE as well.

Living in Brisbane for the last 2 years one if the things I've learnt is to ignore Qantas International completely. As they themselves ignore BNE it works well.

    • +6

That's awful to hear this so often, delays, then cancellations

      As note:

"The federal government should consider forcing airlines to pay passengers compensation for cancelled or delayed flights, the consumer watchdog has said in a report criticising the industry."
      - (ABC, www.abc.net.au/news/2023-06-05/accc-report-on-airlines-fligh…)

    • I flew the direct Sydney route and sat next to someone from Toowoomba. The flight time of nearly 11 hours was tiring enough but, for him, he had to endure additional transfer times (including an overnight stay in Sydney). Talk about resolve!

I paid $1200 via Singapore on Singapore Airlines in September 2022.

Seoul is cool. Super easy to get around and hang out in. Lots of museums, bars, transport, historic sites.

Plus Busan is a $60 2.5 hour KTX (bullet train) ride away, and is a nice ocean city.

September weather won't be too bad. Just coming out of summer, so temps should be dropping.

Autumn is what they call it

  • You guys think Jetstar will do EOFYS mid June?

  • +2

Seoul is nice but accommodation isnt cheap from memory.

    • +1

I'm in Seoul now and paying $80 a night in Insadong (hotel). I'll be spending my last night in Hongdae for $60 a night (hotel). Is that expensive?

      • Cheap. But I'm sure the hotel is very basic

        • +2

Room is on the smaller size but otherwise very clean and comfortable. Has gym and laundry too but I don't really use those when traveling.

  • any cheap flights during christmas?

    • I've got Google flights on and the cheapest I've found is about $1,401 but dates are 10-24/12 with Vietnam.

Best dates are 8-23/12 for $1,200 ish but, Jetstar

    Good price.

A330 though? Yup. The Qantas fleet is so poor.

I feel you might as well tag in Japan. Seoul is nice, but leaves you wanting more from your trip.

    • +6

Knowing what I know now, I'd fly to Seoul, KTX to Busan, catch the ferry to Japan, then catch the trains north to Tokyo, and then fly home.

      • +1

You sound like the perfect person to tour with I would have no idea…

      • Great tips. How much is the ferry to Japan (and which city)?

        • There is a few. Can get the speedy ferry to Fukuoka and it takes like 3 hours? I'm not 100% sure.

        • +3

I forget the cost but took the overnight ferry to Fukuoka about 10yrs ago. It's a really enjoyable city name to say out loud for some reason. Fook-U-Oka.
I then had a 10day bus pass for unlimited travel in Japan. I took night buses everywhere, and a couple of cities, stored my bag in bus station lockers, explored for the day then night bus to next city.
Was knackered by the end but my 10days in Japan averaged $30usd per day from memory. Food was the going out of date Bento Boxes from the supermarkets.

    • Curious if you could expand more on this? I've been to Japan (trip of a lifetime, would love to go back) but am keen to go to South Korea at some point too. Have been told by a few people who have been that South Korea is a bit like a more dull version of Japan, but I wonder if that might be an unfair comparison (sounds like you might agree with that assessment though!)

      • +1

It's more enjoyable if you can tick off a visit to the Penis Park from your bucket list.

      • I really enjoyed my trip to Korea. Would I go back? Yes. Would I go back over visiting Japan again? No. And I’ve been to Japan 7 times.

        • Where do you recommend visiting in Japan? Don't mind checking out lesser known places either (would be second visit if I flew out again)

          • @Blitzfx: Depends what you’re interested in? We’ve enjoyed eating lots of interesting food, hiking (spring/autumn), skiing (winter) photography (street and landscape), onsens (you’ll get over the whole being nude thing quite quickly), buying contemporary ceramics, visiting contemporary art museums.

We love Tokyo for much of the above. Kyoto is obviously beautiful too.

Can also highly recommend Naoshima (and neighbouring islands) for art and culture.

Other lesser known places worth a visit: Kyushu, Kanazawa, Nikko, Fuji five lakes area, Yakushima island

      • I literally got back from a trip to Korea a few days ago and thought it was great, but these things all depend on what you like to do. Interesting culture, fascinating modern history, and amazing food (so long as you like spicy food and kimchi). Another way to think of it is that it has a lot of the same amenities of Japan (public transport, convenience stores etc.) while still being less similar than you probably expect.

It's fair to say that it has fewer bucket-list sights I would visit just to see, but it's a great place to visit and be present in and I would love to go back. Partly because I was just there and their presentation of history has a certain spin on it, also have to say that one of the reasons for it not having those bucket-list sights is that the Japanese burned a lot of them down. Die-hard Japanophiles probably owe it to Korea to go on the Seoul tourist trail called the Path of National Humiliation, maybe pay a visit to the Mimizuka the next time they are in Kyoto etc.

  • OP. Some good deals to India on Scoot. July/August to Amritsar from Melbourne for $293 for example.

    • Thanks - one way or return?

      • One way for the price I mentioned.

  • July and August weather can be pretty grim weather-wise. High 30s and relative humidity at 90%+. But naengmyeon hits different during the summer.

I would definitely recommend going as close to September as possible.

    • Agreed. September or October would be nice though.

anyone got a good itinary plan for south korea from a previous trip?

Seoul: DMZ, Palace, Insadong, Gangnam, Myeongdong, fish market, war memorial, museums
      Other: Busan, Jeju or Gyeongju

One thing I learnt from my last trip involving an international flight with domestic transit in Sydney (Qantas). Heading from Melb to HK. Due to the transit being domestic, you can't claim TRS at your starting city, only at Sydney. as this is where you are leaving Australia from. The Melb flight was delayed by an hour. Meaning we had 1 hr in Sydney. This meant there was only 15mins to claim the GST as they wont process it withing 45mins of departure. There were over 100 people in line when we reached the TRS section. Even with 10 counters open (vs Melbourne's appauling 3) there was no chance of claiming. Coming back from HK, we were told in HK duty free that they couldnt sell us alcohol as it would be taken off us in Sydney as we wouldn't be allowed to bring it on the plane to Melbourne. Yet we could buy dutyfree in Sydney and bring it on the plane to Melbourne. This is assuming that your luggage is not off-loaded in Sydney and transfered directly to the domestic flight. However our flight was delayed multiple times and the Sydney to Melb flight rescheduled twice. We then still missed the flight in Sydney and were put on the following flight. The luggage for all passagers was off loaded in Sydney. So technically we could have bought the duty free alcohol in HK and then put it inside the checked luggage in Sydney to bring back to Melbourne. However I am not sure if this part can be known in advance or not/
Obviously not an issue if you live in NSW, or don't bother claiming TRS or buy alcohol.

    • HK duty free told you bullshit. Nothing wrong with bringing it on the plane from SYD - MEL. I do it all the time !

      • So you have done the international transit flight from Hk into Sydney then onto Melbourne carrying the duty free alcohol purchased in Hk?

        • Who are you flying SYD to MEL with?

          • @Repstar: Its all Qantas. Booked as a Flight From Mel to Hk to Mel. However transits in Sydney up and back. So I bought the alcohol in Sydney, but prices were more expensive and crappy range too.

            • @Sammyboy: And when you arrive into SYD you transfer to the domestic terminal to continue to MEL?

                • @Sammyboy: Yep so they are wrong. No liquid limitations for domestic flights.

                  • @Repstar: So you have done an international flight and transited in Sydney to then head to another state?
The problem is the alcohol is from overseas. They dont let you bring that alcohol on the domestic flight. However they will let you purchase the duty free alcohol in Sydney and then take it on the plane to another state. On google search people have had their alcohol taken off them in Sydney transit when it was purchased overseas. Even happened to one of the writers for one of the travel sites

                    • @Sammyboy: That doesn't make sense. Whats the difference between buying 2L at SYD on arrival compared to buying it in HK? To answer your question, yes, I literally do this ALL the time flying into SYD and then transiting to another state. Not once has it ever not been allowed.
