This lens is $1,899 at Sony: https://store.sony.com.au/lenses-g-lens/SEL24F14GM.html#cid=…

Price match with CameraPro for $1,599: https://www.camerapro.com.au/8256-sony-fe-24mm-f-1-4-gm-lens…

Sony cashback: $100

stack it with 8% shopback (on RRP before GST): https://www.shopback.com.au/sony (apparently, 12% cashrewards doesn't apply to price match purchases anymore: https://www.cashrewards.com.au/store/sony)

so, 1,899 -> 1,599 - 100 - 115.1 = $1,383.8

It's close to this cheap deal last year: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/748522

If you can find a (potentially second hand) Sigma/Sony 14mm 1.8, I would recommend that!

          • @WhatsThisThenSlaat: Found this on the internet. Not sure how accurate.

The difference between f/1.8 and f/1.4 in exposure is 2/3EV. If you're shooting at ISO 800 and 1/1000 second with the f/1.4 lens, you can get the same light by shooting at ISO 1250 or setting the exposure to 1/640 second with the f/1.8 lens.

I've never tried taking a video of the aurora but using 1.4 vs 1.8 for stills of the milky way I don't notice a big difference, but 14mm vs 24mm is a huge difference in terms of what you can fit in, especially when you're shooting vertically/portrait.

Would love to see the video you got of the aurora by the way!

Definitely the Sony. It's got basically no coma abberation, so stars won't appear smeared out. Very few other lenses can do that well. Here's a comparison of a star field with the sigma: https://youtu.be/51X-JW024nU?t=332

I'd recommend the Sony 20 1.8 as well. Performs very similarly to the 24, but costs $999 after cashback at least from this store.

Yeah I would go with the 20mm F1.8 for astro than the 24mm GM. The 20mm is basically a hidden gem and is extremely sharp with no coma.

apparently others had bad experience as they don't validate claims on Negotiated deals (phone/email/chat) anymore; I meant on price match purchases.

There was some confusion due to terms and conditions being added briefly then removed. Can't speak personally as I still have a little bit of a wait until approval.

        • sent query to then to clarify

        • I think that was the addition and removal of different set of wording a few weeks ago, this new exclusion is only since the start of June.

@Flyerone: oh yeah I see "Ineligible: Negotiated deals (phone/email/chat)" - is added back yet again.

I've seen the Sony FE 20mm F1.8 being used a lot on gimbals.

        A lovely lens. It's a GM masquerading as a G.

too bad, got email from CR confirming price match is NOT eligible

Thank you for reaching out to our team, I hope your day is going well.

I have taken a look at Sony's Special terms advertised through Cashrewards and I can see the following term 'Cashback is ineligible on the following: Negotiated deals (phone/email/chat).' I can confirm that price matching would be considered as negotiated deals and so this would make your transaction not eligible for cashback.

I hope this information was helpful. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

      Sincerely,
      Cara

      • So one is saying yes and one is saying no. We need TA to weigh in on this?

        • response from CashRewards:

I am afraid if you have price matched your Sony transaction then this would fall under negotiated deals and your transaction will most likely be declined for cashback.

Dang, that is sad. It is more convincing and formal since it is written by the service; my info is just through a normal conversation. The good thing is that at least we still have ShopBack for now. Bye bye CR :(

  • Camerahouse eBay has it slightly cheaper: $1829 less $300 = $1529.

Good price. Cheaper to buy brand new with warranty then buy used.
