LED Strip to back of TV falling down

Need some advice please. I have a strip of LED lights across the back of my TV. 1m long and it does have a thick 8mm power cord. I used the self adhesive strip if came with but that started to pull away within a couple of hours.

Then I tried bluetak over the ends. That lasts 24 hours before coming away.

Finally I have tried those self adhesive tabs that you can put cabe ties through and that lasted 3 days before coming away.

The cable end comes away first.

I am loathed to use superglue due to my fear it'll eat into the plastic.

My next attempt was going to be cloth or gaffa tape but I fear I might then block the light a little.

The strip needs to go on the back of the TV as the angle and height is perfect as this is what we use as source of light at night when using the room. We hate overhead lights and we have no room for lamps beside the TV.

A lamp opposite the TV on the couch side just reflects into the TV.

  • I was considering 3M or gorilla….

    • Hi I used gorilla tape on my rgbw strip on tv. No issues.

I cut it into 5mm pieces width. Length is the standard width of the gorilla tape. Works a treat. Used it every 20cm.

If you have something more dense than 120 chip per 1m I can’t see you having issues with light block assuming you stick in a blank pcb gap (ie NOT over a chip)

  • If it's good quality (like 3M) adhesive on the LED strips, you need to make sure that the surface you're affixing the strip to is really really clean - dust is a killer. Also, the back of the TV is probably not smooth, which cuts down on the area that the adhesive has to grip onto. Finally, you need to wait at least 24 hours after you've stuck it down before you put any weight on it (like the cable), and use some sticky tape to hold it in place until it cures. If you have some way of putting it under pressure while it sets, that can help too. Anyway, you've moved on past that stage - maybe next time.

The self-adhesive cable tie tabs have exactly the same problems as I just outlined.

Superglue will not "eat into" the plastic of your TV. However, it can leave a bit of a mess if you don't use it sparingly.

Gaffer or cloth tape (get a good brand) will also be messy, and will leave a residue. If you don't put it over the actual LEDs, though, how can it block the light?

So, what would I try next? I've used hot glue in similar circumstances for me before (LED strip under a monitor stand), and it worked well for me. BUT, you need to leave it for 24 hours before you put any weight on it, and use a few pieces of sticky tape to keep it in place against gravity. And, you'll need to glue it a small section at a time so that the hot glue doesn't set before you can stick it down.

I've heard of people using silicone sealant as glue for LED strips, and it worked well for them. Again, don't use so much that it runs out the side of the strip when you press it down, and again, wait for it to cure before you put any weight on it. Again, sticky tape to hold it in place against gravity.

  • 3M™ VHB™
You can get 30mm spots for $2.98 via Temu

    • VHB risks being very hard to get off, if the surface is contaminated, maybe ok. If not oily plastic, no way. VHB can hold forever once it sets.

      • It's the back of a TV - why would OP need to remove it?

        • I imagine a few reasons, to move it, change the LED, sell the tv…

You can remove VHB tape with WD40. Just spray and let it soak, then peel. You can use fishing line to cut through the tape too.

3M makes a specific solvent to do the job if you want to be "official".

        • Good tip, thanks @eug!

Would probably work for most windscreen e-tag holders too

    Hate overhead lights? Da fuk?

yeah - too bright in the room.

    First world problems?

How many posts on OzB would not be considered first world problems?

      • Sure, but there are levels.. 🤣

    • Sorry. I didn't realise these forums were reserved for global crisis issues. Perhaps you could direct me to a location where I might seek advice as serious in your eyes or not, I still would like some sort of resolution to my issue. Or…perhaps Whirlpool is more your cup of tea ? Either way, in the time it took you to reply twice in this thread, 100 people died in the world.

  • BTW whichever tape you use, make sure you clean the back of your TV with isopropyl alcohol first. If the surface is textured you'd want a thicker tape. The TV back is probably PC-ABS which is a medium surface energy material so you want a tape that is designed to stick to that, e.g. VHB 5952. You can use a primer like 3M 94 to improve adhesion.
