whats the go in regardings to making extra payments to the ATO and claiming it back during tax time. can anyone explain it to me like a 5 year old?

if i made a 1k contribution using these cards, i would have only paid 918 via this offer..

    • Let's start with "1k contribution" you can't exactly pay $1000, you can get $1k worth of pre-paid CC though.
      For $250 prepaid CC: Each card costs ( $250 + 7 ) x 0.9 = $231.3.
      4x $231.3 = $925.2.
So for $925.2 spend (via your current debit or other credit card) you will get 4x $250 pre-paid mastercards ($1000 worth).

So you can pay off $1000 to ATO with $925.2.

      • yep agreed.

how do i make contributions? and if im already getting tax deducted from my payslips, and i make the above contribution, assuming ill get it back in my tax return?

        • Wrt refund: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13826758/redir
For paying, go to the ATO website and login.
I don't know exact steps anymore, but I recall that it was a bit more hidden if there's no open balance.
There is a filter so you can also show the account in credit or $0 balance (unfortunately the screenshots I have is from the successful/failed payments).
I'll try to login later to see where it was again.

@johnmelb: I went to "Find my payment reference number" then clicked into payment options for my income tax account. Then you can pay as normal

Thanks OP bought 10x $250 with no issues.

Decided to use 3x to purchase discounted Amazon GC on the HCF portal. On the 3rd attempt the transaction went through and it was deducted from the Coles GC, but got an email saying my account has been disabled for unusual activity and never received the Amazon GC.

Any idea how the Coles gift cards go with refunds and how long this usually takes?

    • +2

Refunds just come back on the card without any issue.
Wrt how long it usually takes - that depends. I've had refunds to the physical cards (same principle) in 3days, but yesterday also had failed transaction and got it back in a few hours.
It will depend if the merchant releases the hold immediately, or if it requires processing on their side.

  • Anyone knows how long they take to process a refund from a merchant?

    • +2

I bought a woolies card through NRMA yesterday (using one of the gift cards linked to my paypal account). Worked well, so I went to buy a second card. This time I got a message to say the transaction couldn't go through and the money would be refunded. The refunded transaction showed up very quickly on my paypal account but took a few hours to be refunded to my original MC gift card. I was happy with this refund time since Paypal indicated it could take up to 10 days. I guess paypal might be better/faster at refunding than other merchants. FWIW, once the refund came through I then used the same refunded gift card to buy another NRMA woolies card, this time without any problem.

      • Thanks, I'll wait 3-5 days …tried the help line but it's all recorded messages only!

  • Anyone try paying Strata?
    I got stratamax.com.au with 1.2% worth?

    • +1

I paid some yesterday, annoys me they charge so much.

      • How much do you pay for each card?
        I got it to $249.96 ($245.9 + fee $3.69 + gst $0.37)

        • Sorry I forgot to reply, I was paying $245.94 and with the fees it added up to $250. GST was .37 I remember that.

try DEFT, I think it's cheaper
      https://payonce.deft.com.au/#/oneOffPayment

      • +1

my strata don't have DEFT as an option :(

      • Can I prepay my strata fee via DEFT? I don't have any unpaid bills now.

        • Yes

      • Wow I didn't know about this?

How is this different from Strata Max Portal?

It looks like the fees are lower - 1.2% on DEFT and 1.65% for StrataMax

        • +1

Two entirely different companies and processes, cant compare. Some strata committees or managers use one or the other.

          • @Turd: Correct!

            • @YesPleaseThankYou: Thanks for that. My Body Corp bill has both listed as payment options on the bill, so in future will definitely use DEFT One Off Payment instead of Strata Max Portal!

  • Hi guys i am new to GCs. Just wondering if I could use these cards to purchase WWS GCs for future shopping and how?

Thanks in advance for any tips!

  • OMG all the headache and finally they allowed me to purchase!

    Order on Firefox

I think the system just picked whoever it wants to allow

    • Congrats! How many did you order? Have you changed the details?

    • Someone above had said it finally worked for them using chrome after been using firefox before lol

      • Been using Chrome the whole time on my mac. Did not work.

  • My order finally went through, using a citi card.

    • luck of the draw i think - ive tried everything

      • I had a small (test) order that i put in at around 9.30 yesterday morning, which was successful.

But since then I had tried half a dozen times to put in a second order; i used different cards, different addresses, emails and names. All met with failure.

I tried again 25 mins ago and was successful. So either they reset something or it very much is luck of the draw

        • I just placed a second order for my partner 10x $250, delivered in full within 5 minutes.
          Different name/card, same IP address.
          All balances were there.

  • +1

Used my first 15 cards on various expenses with no problem. 16th card got declined. Must have been hacked.

    • Check the balance

  • I tried, it says system error

  • tried again, balance is $250.

    • +2

What are they going to do about it, refund you? I'd take issue with my heavily indebted council refusing to accept prepayments!

        • +1

          That's pretty presumptuous of him.

        • +3

What legal authority does he have to enforce what payment method you use for council rates?

        • +3

That’s ridiculous of him to say that! It’s your money you can spend it how you like. And don’t understand why he want the receipts, I’d be telling him where to go

        • +2

tell him, he can't ask anything because he is not police inspector or ATO … ! if he need anything then put it in writing with legal clause under which is asking for all those details and also ask him which law was broken by you paying the way you paid..> !

if council doesn't like it then they should put it on their website that certain cards can't be used .. !

So how can one spend a $0.90 amount leftover? Most of the gift cards start from $1+. Would not be a problem if it was a plastic card with magnetic stripe but these are electronic.

I would appreciate any serious recommendations thanks.

    • Add card to PayPal then pay whoever accept less than $1 payment.

    • +3

Someone mentioned earlier you can get shopback gift cards and partially use your shopback balance to pay for it. Seems like a pain, but $0.90 is $0.90.

      • Isn't that cashback balance a bit random depending on your activity? I do not think you can manually split the payment there like at the supermarket register?

        • +1

Withdraw money from your account but leave enough in your account for the transaction.

    • +3

Add it to the Macca's app and buy one soft serve cone.

    • If you’re with origin, you can add as much as you want that will count as credit towards your energy bill (min $1 tho)

      • any card surcharge at Origin?

    • You'd have to find a bill that has no minimum for payment.

Or you could buy something that costs ~90c on ebay.

    • I just put my $1 leftover on my Electricity bill, no issues from them, they just took my $1 and said thanks. I'm sure it would have been the same with $0.90c

      • Unfortunately, it seems that most online transactions in AU are limited to $1. Origin wants $1 as a minimum as stated above. But the trick with shopback should work…

  • my card not working at woolworths gift cards or prezzee. really ordinary, never had an issue before with these type of cards

  • Can't check my balance after purchased one $150 prezzee gift card. unable to check the card number and cvv to place my next order. anyone knows how to figure out?

  • I now have four cards that are getting declined at different merchants despite the balance showing as $250. I spent 30 min on hold to customer service and when I got through finally, the person insisted there was nothing wrong with the card and hung up on me.

    • +4

Try tomorrow, same happened to me yesterday, but working today

      • same here

      • Same to me, except I just waited a few minutes

    • +1

Which merchants are you trying to use them at?

It could be that the merchants are refusing to process your gift cards in the first place, and some merchants will refuse to process prepaid Mastercard gift cards.

      • that's not it, a different card from the batch worked.

  • good to hear, I was getting worried

  • Can we get flybuys points with these purchases?

    • +7

Did you see anywhere to enter your FB number?

      • Maybe if ordered with a Coles credit card?

Bought 10 x $250 online Coles MC yesterday. Went to use 6 hours later and one had been used already at Energy Australia. There not Energy Australia in WA. Contacted Coles online and they said change email password and file a Police complaint. Energy Australia said we can't help you as we can not discuss another customers account. Rang the 07 number on back of card and been over 20 minutes on hold.

I checked my gmail and all the logged in devices and IP addresses are at my house.

Heritage Bank said they have received a lot of complaints about this, but they can't help as they only issue the card on behalf of MC.

Only buy these cards if going to use immediately otherwise like me will be wasting significant time if a card is compromised.

    • +3

Wow, that was quick. Sorry to hear. Hope it will be sorted soon. Thanks for the warning. Have to use straightaway. Disappointing Heritage Bank doesn't care.

    • Probably due to immatured delivery system, i.e. same cards to different customers.

    • Dispute to your bank?

    • Heritage Bank said they have received a lot of complaints about this, but they can't help as they only issue the card on behalf of MC.

Heritage Bank lied to you. Follow the Heritage Bank complaint process. Let us know what happens.

Heritage Bank reaps the rewards from this arrangement then washes its hands of any problems. Liars and cheats.

One of the cards I bought yesterday has already been used, very alarming. Bought 20 yesterday. Only received in the afternoon.

    • +1

Oh no! That's bad news. The digital ones seem to be hacked faster than the physical ones. Hope you get the refund soon.

      • +1

Unlike the physical cards, these digital cards are with Heritage bank, could they be preloaded/activated and sent to the buyers upon payment received?

@Elitebhy: My theory is that the same card was sent to both me and someone else, I received it at 3pm yesterday, so this was not used until 8:13 am this morning.

          • +1

@Elitebhy: It does look like "same cards to different customers" to me.

            • +1

@Neoika: Actually these logs makes no sense to me, I didn't get the card until 3pm Wednesday, 31 May 2023, the $100 paypal transaction took place before I even got the card at 8:13 am.

              • +1

@Elitebhy: Begs the question if it's worth the discount.

                • +2

@nightelves: Could it be the cards were activated upon payment. During the delay sending time, they were hacked?
But from the log, it looks like a normal user was using the card, not like a hacker. Hacker will try to get the cash rather than leaving trace like paypal accounts, PREZZEE info.

@fatice: the log just looks like what another ozbargainer would buy.
