Everything I need but a SD card slot

    • +2

A SD card slot is certainly useful

    • +6

I ended up putting a USBC drive on my keyring.

Not ideal, but 256GB is enough space to do MOST things.

128GB phones without sdcards is a felony though.

      • +2

What do you store on your phone which is more than that? Videos?

        • +10

          ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Videos….

        • +2

Music is about 48GB worth. (Assuming I carry MP3 not flac).
Whatever series im watching at the time.
Roms, in case I feel like gaming a bit.
          Several audio and ebooks.

My phone is used like a portable PC; so whatever Id do at home, I like to be able to do on the road.

          • +1

@MasterScythe: Fair enough, but definitely doesn't apply to everyone. With widespread use of cloud storage I'd say 128gb is fine for a majority of regular users and spending any more for extra space would be a waste.

            • +3

@nigel deborah: Certainly not everyone, of course not. I just happen to hang out with a lot of "ozbargainers" where the monthly cost to have a 'big' data plan quickly outweighs the cost of simply buying the extra storage in the first place.

          • @MasterScythe: how many songs take up that 48gb?

        • Will these connect to a phone?

          • +1

@BluebirdV: Yes, by default they should be formatted in FAT32 file system, so long as you don't reformat it into NTFS it will work with almost all devices.

The only downside is it won't be able to handle larger than 4GB per file.

            • @Jimbuscus: exFAT works on Android and functionally has no file size limits.

              • +1

@Vinnie Vegas: Except exFAT can corrupt your USB of it isn't ejected by the system correctly, it would be ideal to be able to pull it out without the risk of losing all the data.

exFAT gets around it's 32 bit file size limit by not having a file journal at all, which means there is no logs of changes, that makes the whole file system prone to risk.

                • +1

@Jimbuscus: Sounds like EXT3 or EXT4 would be the best choices, now that windows allows you to mount them using WSL 2, just like Linux :)
                  And natviely supported in Android.

        • I've got one of these they run super duper hot for whatever reason

    • you mean it is with a SD card slot or without?

  • +5

outside google samsung, other andriod's software support is always my concern.

  • C&C not available

    • +1

Thanks for letting me know. I haven't noticed that. I will fix title.

  • Anyone have a spare code, please pm me. Appreciate it

  • Price and specs look great! But the camera these days all comes down to the software. No idea if Motorola have mastered the picture software like Apple and Samsung have.

    • Reviews seem to show them being pretty good.

  • +8
  • Edge 30 fusion for same price looks better in every way

    • Camera better on this one plus it has the 5x lens.

    • Why is the fusion better?

    • that has 8gb/128gb this is 12gb/256gb, big difference there

  • +1

Having an SD slot is better, you never know when you'll need the space for a rainy day (mp3s/flacs/videos etc).

  • +4

    YMMV

If this helps anyone decide whether to get it, I've owned this phone for a year, and tried to use a Pixel 6a simultaneously (both within similar price range atm). Apart from its large form factor which I don't like because I prefer a single handed UX, this blows Pixel 6a out of the water.

    Reasons being:
    120Hz refresh rate (max 144Hz)
    Camera quality is unnoticeably similar
Amazing 5x zoom lens and a wide angle camera that gives you more options than the pixel 6a's camera

I've also got the update to Android 13 which has been smooth sailing for me. UI is virtually clean like Pixel UI with almost no bloatware (if at all).

  • Would this be considered an upgrade or downgrade from an Oppo Find X5?

    • Almost similar except for ram oppo find x5 lite 5g 256gb has 8 gb this has 12gb,but Oppo has expanded memory option

  • -2

No wireless charging from what I've read. A big negative, as I find that micro usb ports deteriorate over time. But it's exceptional specs for the price.

    • Sorry, is this micro USB ? Specs say, USB (Type-C) Port 3.1

      • +1

It's USB C, just doesn't have wireless charging. the 30's seem to all have wireless charging.

I recently helped my dad get a phone and got this, very impressive especially at the price
        https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/motorola-edge-30-neo-5g-1…

        • Why is the neo preferable?

          • +1

@ninnypoop: It's the smallest one, and might have better battery life because it's got a watered-down SoC. Aside from that the others are better.

            • @Void: Thanks. Small form factor is high on my priority list. Otherwise, I only really need NFC.

Tempted to price match with Amazon $388. Use 10% perks voucher ($349.20) and the 10% of Coles MasterCard (rounding to 7% true saving) to get the phone for $324.75

That funky looking fingerprint scanner in the centre of the screen looks off putting though. How do these impact screen viewing, especially if they ever collect dust and grime?

              • +1

@ninnypoop: I think it's under-display. The one on my Pixel 7a isn't visible. Only thing is though it kinda sucks because it's not as accurate as a capacitive one, and sometimes doesn't read my fingerprint.

    • Yeah. I didn't think that it would be, but this is rapidly becoming a must have feature for me.

It's kinda sad that device manufacturers are still quite random on which devices get wireless charging.

    Pay $200 more and get S22 Ultra…

    • +1

      Link?

        • +1

I take it you're handing out phones eligible for trade in?

          • @Diji: Nope..just your cheapy earphones will be fine.

            • @CrypticM: I dunno what you mean. Whenever I've seen those trade in deals they only accept the big brand phones like Google, Samsung, Apple, etc.

    • why negging? Genuinely curious…

      • +2

Because it’s not $200 extra. It’s $300 extra to begin with and even then that’s only if you get a loyalty discount, some voucher and a trade in.

It’s not at all comparable with this deal.

  • I got this one exactly 2 month ago on 30/Mar/2023 for $499 at JB HiFi, very happy with the value of money.
If you are after just normal daily use, I think it's great.
Hope it lasts 5 years+ with 256GB storage!

    • +1

Doubt you'll get 5 years life.
In 4 years use of my Moto, 2 batteries have totally failed. Lasts few min off charge.
Security updates for 2-3 year & 2 OS updates are usual. You're on your own after that.
Just replaced phone as had developed annoying other issues. Looks like new.

      • Thanks for sharing the reality

        • Hopefully your reality will be better😉

  • Device has now received Android 13 and May 2023 security update. I bought in the last JB deal. I find the auto brightness control a bit odd sometimes and had some issues with bluetooth connections compared to my previous Moto but I'm hoping that the last security update brought some bug fixes. I run the screen fixed at 144hz and it's smooth to use.

  • nobody mentioning if the bootloader is unlocked, or if the os is rootable - for shame.

    • +1

Yes and yes to both. See here

    • +2

It has official LineageOS support, although the lack of SD card and headphone jack is enough for me to steer clear.

  • bit confused, is it with a microSD slot or not? The specs in different websites have different answers.

    • +2

      No microsd

    • +1

      Gsmarena says no.

  • Hmmm, this or Pixel 7?

    • +1

If the camera is important, pay a bit extra for the Pixel 7. Far superior.

      • Camera matters to me so I might pull the plug on the pixel!

  • +1

The camera has always been the weak link for these Motorolas. Anyone an idea if this one is decent?

(the amount of megapixels are irrelevant IMHO)

    • The bigger the worse it is actually. Unless sensor size also increases with it.

      • When talking digital processessing; that is unless they perform pixel binning, because that allows for 1 pesudo pixel to be comprised of 4 'real' pixels, which allows for more light data to be captured and assessed.

If you were using a camera that did minimal processing and relied on the sensor being 'correct' (like most DSLR's) then you're 100% correct.
But in a smart phone where the software 'messes with the capture' at all times (because small crap sensor) it's valuable data to know that '3 pixels out of this 4 pixel bin are bright' letting the software know that the light is likely directional, and one corner isn't as well lit.

hugely complex topic to get into, but a fun read if you're into that sort of thing.

      • Yeah agreed, 108 megapixels on a sensor as tiny as this is just silly. Way too noisy even with software processing.

        • It looks like it uses pixel binning as above mentioned by the @MasterScythe. The effective megapixel count is actually 108 / ?9. It sacrifises color accuracy for sharpness. They make up color accuracy using AI I think.

It's pretty clever especially for quick snaps and video etc.

  • If only it had stereo speakers.

    • If only it had a 65" display.

      • +1

        8k or dont bother.

      • Heh, you missed the decimal I imagine;
6.7" isn't that much bigger in this form factor.

  • this vs my current sd888 mi 11i and 108mp 🤔

  • Single Sim version of the Edge 30 Pro is also available:

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/motorola-edge-30-pro-5g-1…

Strangely has a cheaper build with a plastic frame and Gorilla Glass 3, though it does have a more powerful SOC.

    • It's weird that they have 2 versions at a $100 difference?

      https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/motorola-edge-30-pro-5g-1…

Single sim vs dual sim edge 30 pro?

      • +1

A brief search didn't enlighten me as to whether there are any differences between the models aside from the dual SIM capability.
It's a pretty odd product all round. When you compare it to the Edge 20 Pro and the Edge 30 Fusion:

        • Lacks the telephoto of the 20 Pro but adds OIS and for some reason bumps the selfie cam up to 60 MP.
        • Display is covered with Gorilla Glass 3 (while having 5 on the back), while the 30 Fusion and 20 Pro have 5 on both sides.
        • The frame is plastic, whereas the other two feature an aluminium frame.
        • You get the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 if performance is what you're after
        • 15 W wireless charging
  • Hello everyone,

Is this one of the best sub $500 phone going around in terms of features and specs ?

Also to all long time users of this mobile, how does it fare in terms of battery life and overall performance.

Thinking of getting this one for my daughter.

    TIA

    • +2

I just bought the Edge 30 Fusion for my daughter. Decided the Fusion was a better buy with newer processor and more Android updates.

      • Thanks for the reply….do you reckon photos are better in Fusion compared to this. Checked out a few reviews but they are not consistent. To each their own I suppose.

    • +1

It's a excellent phone for under $500. The weakness being photos. It's not terrible but Google Pixel photos are way better.
How important are good quality photos to your daughter.

      • +1

Thanks for your comment. Now not sure what to do. Daughter says photos are not so important, but I know that's not true ha ha

        • Is she doing influenzer stuff? If not, any phone will do. They mostly just snap chat. They almost never use it to call or text.

  • Moved to Moto from a pixel 2xl
Wtf is with Google Photos being locked down with almost every feature being behind a Google One subscription. So lame.
