Philippine Airlines: Perth to Tokyo (Haneda) via Manila $763 Return (with 30kg Luggage) @ Google Flights

510

Wanted to show Perth some love with the Japan deals - this one is definitely decent, on Philippine Airlines via Manila. I used the duration filters on Google Flights to only show dates with short stops, but if you're happy to have a longer one you might find more dates.
These include 30kg luggage, and fly into Haneda.
Dates are a bit scattered, from late July to November 2023 (with most in August) and more February to April 2024.

I know there were some comments about Philippine Airlines or stopping over in Manila, but personally I have not had a problem with either and would 100% fly with Philipp Airlines again, and/or via Manila.

Anyway, the deal!

I flew PA a few times to JP with stopovers in Manila, the flights are cheap, but it's one of the worst stopover airports I've been to, there's a long distance in transit with a bunch of nonsense security procedures and a shitty waiting area. On the return flight to AUS the whole flight was corralled into a narrow corridor next to the runway in Manila airport where we were asked to claim and open our bags on the floor while security sifted through our clothes. The whole thing wasn't communicated properly and felt more like a heist than a security procedure. The planes felt old and the food was crap, unless you're really scraping for cheap tickets I'd avoid these. China Southern has had some better deals recently.

Manilla airport is a transit hellhole that nobody should be exposed to. I didn’t mind Philippine Airlines.

The current airport is a hole. Here is hoping the new one is better.

      • Agree, I flew about 5 times to Manila last year with PAL and they are fine to fly with but their terminal (2) sucks. The lounge is over crowded, often hard to find a seat and there is nowhere decent within the terminal to eat or have a drink while you wait. Best place for food is the hotdog stand

Which is a shame as Terminal 3, where the other carriers depart from, is actually ok, they have decent lounges and some places to sit and eat/drink

For being their national carrier I would have expected their lounges and terminal (especially their international) to be the best, especially when their flights to Manila are often more expensive than Qantas, Cathay and Singapore

    • can not agree more.

the flight products were solid with A350 (nice seat and huge screen) and the service were really well. The airport was a mess..highly recommended for no check in luggage passengers only.

Contrary to this, I flew Sydney to London on PAL in 2018 and it was as smooth and pleasant as possible. 0600 departure on a fresh and spacious 2-4-2 layout A330 with large and responsive screens, a layover where we were constantly moving or queueing (processing was about 40 minutes all up) until boarding a 6 month old 777 with a similarly fresh cabin. Besides waiting a short while for everyone to transfer, it was all punctual and checked bags arrived at Heathrow no issue. This was for $700 per person one way and the fastest way to reach London - it feels torturous sitting down that long but since it wasn't a red-eye, the jet lag wasn't bad. Unfortunately this flight combination of PR214 and PR720 no longer exists, with the former early morning flight ending with border closures in March 2020 and the latter route on pause after they shrunk the fleet during COVID.

Exact same experience. Although I don't remember the flight itself being too bad, it might've been bad, just not as bad as the airport experience, which is all I can remember because of how absolute shit it was.

    • What a glowing report !

Thanks for the heads up. 😀

    Any similar from Sydney?

      To Perth via Manila?

      • +2

Sure why not. Lets do a long trip.

Just rembered this youtuber. He did an around the world trip in 80 hours. On low coast airlines. Was going to fly jetstar when he got to melbourne. Big mistake. Flight got cancelled.

    • Yep, posted this deal a few days ago

I flew with PA to Narita few weeks ago. Here is my experience.
    - Cabin crew is excellent
    - Served food is OK (Well… not the same level like Singapore AL, but better than Qantas if you need a reference)
    - The airport is crap and small. But you can go to city if you have a long stopover.
    - Plenty of accommodation near the airport if that's what you prefer.
    - Traffic is horrible. So leave plenty of time to get back to the Airport.
    - Manila offers nice street food. We enjoyed while walking around the city.
    - Didn't have any security issues. Friendly and warm people.
    - There is a shuttle bus connecting terminals that goes basically around the airport (but through City traffic). So you can save money paying for taxis transfering from Terminal 2 to 3 for example.
    - Luggage will be inspected during re check-in.

AND we had a flight cancellation…
    - Ground staff tried their best to attend our needs
    - PA gave us a decent hotel
    - Horrible checkin experience at the hotel delay, probably due to large number of passengers got stuck
    - The food served to room and was bad. We threw them away and went out for meals

So all in all, a mixed experience. I heard that such cancellations are common with PA. So if you have a tight schedule, look for an alternative. But if you are flexible, their prices are pretty good to ignore.

    • This is helpful, thank you!

    • Their flights often seem to get cancelled. It could be anecdotal, but happened to a family member a few years back which nearly ruined their holidays. Flying from Sydney to Japan via Manila, their flight was to take off in the arvo. Boarding was smooth and after waiting on their plane seat for two hours they were told that there was some technical difficulty so that plane couldn't fly. They were given a hotel near Sydney airport. The local authority of the airlines tried to call another plane from their base (Manila) but it took them more than two days (maybe it was very expensive to do so and they didn't want to) and my family members had to end up spending two nights of their holidays within the hotel in Sydney. Eventually they flew out after nearly three days of delay. Philippine Airlines' planning seemed extremely poor. No contingency plan in place at all. The service during the flight was good, I hear, but in case of flight cancellation, not a good experience for anyone losing so much time waiting for the flight during the precious annual holidays.

  • FYI, Philippine Airlines International Arrivals/Departures in Manila will move from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 in June 2023. So, it will be a different experience.

I am not sure though if Terminal 1 is better, but I definitely hate going through Terminal 2 because of the lack of food options.

    • I think that terminal will probably cope better with international passenger loads (T2 was designed for domestic) but is disorganised. Might end up worse than the current T2 with PAL competing with other airlines. Although T2 wasn't a bad experience for me because there wasn't a spare second to sit down during transit.

I find it interesting PAL isn't moving all flights into the newest terminal, T3. Being the national airline you'd think they'd have priority.

  • Do you have anything for Adelaide to Japan?

    Gimme that sweet, sweet Balut.

    • +2

Nice, will get some Balut in the market on my long stop over from Manila to Perth.

      • +3

        That's the way!

Just don't bring any back for me! 😅

  • Have said this in past Philippine Airline deals but.. would avoid at all cost. One of the worst air travel experience I've ever had.

Would happily pay more to avoid.

Edit: flight itself was actually fine, the airport however, absolute shithole.

  • Not sure if this experience applies to the same terminal, but I flew from Osaka to to Melbourne via layover in Manila (Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3).

Possibly the worst experience of my life at an airport. There was a 6 hour gap between our flights and because the new gate hadn't opened, they took our passports and led us to a holding room. In the holding room (had a few plastic seats, maybe about 20m x 20m), we had no access to water and only our carry on luggage.

I asked for some water and they said I had to purchase, so I gave them $20 AUD and asked for 2 bottles of water. The staff took the $20 and then came back and said it wasn't enough for water.

Instead we sat (on the floor) for several hours thirsty until the gate opened. When the gate opened, we had to go find our bags which were at the gate, and had to present them to security. My bag locks had been cut, despite having a TSA lock on it as well. Atleast there were some decent food options once released from custody lol

I really don't get this Manila Airport hell hole comments. We (family of four) flew from Perth to Tokyo via Manila April this year. And based on Ozbargain comments I expected a nightmare experience but it was the opposite. In fact, Manila Airport transfer was one of the fastest transfers I have ever experienced. On our way to Tokyo it took exactly 13 minutes from the arrival point to departure gate (and that's with kids, going through security etc). On our way back, it took a bit longer (15 minutes) but still lightening fast compared to other recent transfers we've had in Singapore (30 minutes) and Sydney (25 minutes). Funny thing is, we landed in world's one of best airports (Haneda) and had to wait 2 hours to get out (due to lack of staff in immigration section, the que was ridiculous). I was thinking to myself, the Manila Airport, even without any bells and whistles or the cleanness of Haneda, still did miles better in getting the basic job done (getting the customer from point A to point B via shortest time). Perhaps we just got lucky in Manila but I can't imagine someone having to walk miles in such a tiny little airport (compared to say Chengi). But I agree with one thing, the Phillipine officials were really not the most pleasant. They did not have any passion for their job whatsoever. We came across quite a few people who were sleeping while on the job. lol
