  • Maybe dumb question, but how would this fare as cheap baby monitor?

    • +1

I think it will work well. Has speakers and a microphone, what else do you need?

      • +1

Works but both mic and speakers are crap. AI recognition is crap too.

I bought it for the price. Regret not buying Eufy Indoor Cam

    • that's what I used it for

      works great

      • Does it have visible red lights at night,

        • There is a status "power on" led which you can turn off via the app

          • @jastreb: I was more meaning the night vision, a lot of 'webcams' have visible red lights, whereas baby monitors seem to have them well hidden or use a more expensive tyoe that you dont see.

            • +2

@Gumbootboy: ok I see. I believe there is like 2 red leds behind a dark tinted cover. Have not noticed them to be honest when walking past the cameras in the dark so I don't think they are very obtrusive. I moved them to my dads house last week so I can remotely monitor their place while they are overseas or I would have checked it our for a more sure answer for you.

    • +1

Not as a primary monitor unless you have a tablet with the app open all the time. But you could pick up a cheap audio monitor from gumtree and pair with this for video.

      • +3

it can give notifications to your phone if you set up the motion & noise settings

    • +1

It will work great, tplink cameras are very responsive and easy to use.

    • +1

      Works great. Would recommend.

    • I'm using the Xiaomi 360 camera as a baby monitor, which is basically same thing as this.

Works well overall, but caveats are:
      a) You need the app to be open at all times if you want constant live streaming
      b) Internet connection needs to be stable, otherwise live feed errors/disconnections are bound to happen (due to drop outs etc)

For me it's more the 2nd point that has been an issue since we've experienced a few drop outs in the middle of the night, so the live feed wasn't working until we got up to check and reconnect (we use it to monitor our son overnight who sleeps in a separate room).

Personally I'm thinking of replacing mine and just go with a dedicated baby monitor that works straight out the box without an active internet connection.

Not an issue if you don't need constant live streaming or you could just get a separate audio monitor, but my preference is an all-in-one solution.

      • tp-link Au version won't have the drop out issue.

    • If your WiFi dies it won't work.

    • Excellent. The best way to use it which bypasses internet and app issues is a live feed to vlc using and old laptop

    • +1

better than the baby monitor, night vision on tplink is awesome

    • +1

it actually has baby crying detection in the TP-link software. Haven't tried it out, but will get one as a baby monitor as the price seems very reasonable. The only issue to consider is if the internet goes out. A lot of people opt for 'offline' baby monitors for this reason.

      • -1

I think you need to pay for the subscription for that

        • +1

nah, baby crying detection is free. Cloud backup, rich notification and few other things needs subscription.

      • I haven't tried this personally, but the camera can do RTSP. If you have a 3rd party app (eg. VLC) I am sure you should be able to view the feed over your intranet without the need for internet.

        • I just tried this as I have 2 other C210's already. Seems to be a bit of an issue as it streams for about 2 secs before it freezes on the same frame. Not sure if I've got my settings right or not.

          • +1

@kohie: weird. I do remember now that when I was originally setting this up pihole had blocked one of the tapo urls and the camera was not able to go online or something. It would still show the feed on the tapo app on my phone but the camera would show a solid amber light which meant it is connected to wifi but not online.

Not sure if this is the same as no internet but thought it might come in handy

    • Have been using one for first 10 months and has been great :)

    • I use it to see what my cats are doing while I'm out and to keep an eye on the fire. Great unit for <$45

      • keep an eye on the fire

Why not just put it out?

        • Doesn't look like this is an outdoor rated camera.

          • +1

@FarKen: They are talking about the fire. Never put your indoor fires outside because they will run wild!

    • Very very well. These are phenomenal for the price.

    • Seems like it creates the problem of needing a device as the 'parent unit' the whole time?

    • I use this exactly for this reason.

Downside is the audio isnt the best, but picture quality is really good for the price. Its alao easy remote access when you have a baby sitter

    • +1

Using it as one right now and does its job. As other's mentioned the audio / motion detection could be a hit and miss. It supports RTSP so you can use one of the many 3rd party apps to view the feed from your android tv or firestick as PiP (even VLC can do RTSP).

One complaint is that its tilt down range is much smaller compared to tilt up. So if you plan on putting the camera right next to the baby's cot/bed the camera might not tilt all the way down to cover the area. You can alternatively try to mount it upside down and invert the image from within the app.

There are a couple of red IR light when nigh vision is ON, had never bothered my bub though.

  • +3

Great price, but beware this variant comes with the UK plug.

    • would a simple AU adapter work or does it need a converter of some sort

      • Adaptor will work

      • even a simple travel power adapter that that fits the UK plug which will then connect to our AU power point will be fine.

  • +1

Bought the Amazon AU version for $69 other day…

    • yeah same here doh but on previous research i thought there was concerns getting this from the UK?

  • Any indoor camera that work on battery?

    • +1

      powerbank

    • Wyze v2/3 - microb

  • +1

    hmm better than imou ?

  • Do these type cameras take a memory card to keep history? I had an online subscription to do this but it was getting expensive.

    • +3

They do, yeah. no subscription required.

    • Same. Selling the subscription based ones now ..

  • +1

TP-Link Tapo C210 can expose RTSP which is great if you have any mobile app that can view the stream (with other IP cams rather than using the TP-Link app)
or using VLC in desktop to view the stream

If you have setup Home Assistance the stream can be added into the dashboard
If you have HA together with Apple TV the stream can even be added to HomeKit (Apple Home app)

I have been using with synology surveillance station and it has been very stable

    • +2

Can even add as onvif camera to HomeKit via scrypted. If you want to leverage the two way audio.

    • I have noticed the rtsp stream is quite slow compared to through the app. Might just be me idk 🤷‍♂️

    • Any chance you can link a guide for this please?

  • bought this last year- just buy UK to AU adapter ($5ish at bunnings) and you are set (need extra space at the wall point though)

Really solid performance- never let me down.

    • Does it have visible red lights at night?

      • It has a status led that you can turn off, im not sure if will remove all light

        • Night mode uses infrared but it generates barely any visible light, just tiny dull LEDs, hasn’t been an issue for our baby

    • Reviews state they need a subscription? So don't want that :/

  • Has anyone used this as outdoor camera? not exposed to rain or water as it will be under roof all the time. Anything thats not in this that is included in some outdoor cameras?(other than IP rating)

    • I have this near my window so I can watch both inside my home and the backyard. Works pretty well so far, only downside is it picks up wind noise quite badly sometimes. Also the movement detection is quite sensitive, I initially turned it on to follow my dog around but all it did was focusing on tree branches.

    • Been using one outdoors for over a year with no issues. It is however mounted on a wall under a porch, which is around 1200mm deep.from the front and about 1000mm in from the side.

    • Not good if looking through a window into a back yard at night due to the glare from the cameras night light.

      • Don't use Auto Mode. Switch the camera view to Day Mode, it'll be fine. BTW I can watch my place when sitting in a restaurant (using mobile data). I didn't know that it has remote viewing capacity. You need your Wi-Fi router to be on.

        • day mode doesn't work well at night …

    • Had one outside for a couple of years. It's under the eaves and on the side of the house away from prevailing weather. It's been fine. I pulled it down once to clean the dust from body, as it was noisy rotating, been fine otherwise.
If it's going to be exposed to rain and constant wind I'd go with the 225, they're not too bad a price if you have a Good Guys Commercial account.

  • Would it be able to save the footage directly onto OneDrive?

    • +1

Not natively. I connected the camera to an NVR using ONVIF. As my NVR allowed connecting to an SFTP server, I had a local SFTP windows server running with the directory syncing to Box. Then I found a way to create an SFTP server on Oracle cloud free tier so decommissioned the local server.

I have been currently using the Aussie variant and waiting for the UK (cheaper) variant delivery for a second location. I absolutely recommend this product. Here are the highlights.

    - 2-Way talk over the internet using TP-Link Tapo App
    - AI based Alarm for smart motion detection (Person detection)
    - Supports ONVIF so can be connected to any ONVIF NVR over Wifi for 24 x 7 recording
    - Support SD Card recording
    - Supports Motion detection events to NVR (so NVR can tag events on surveillance video recording)
    - Supports AI notifications for Human and Baby Crying on TP-Link Tapo app
    - Supports Motion Tracking so it can turn to follow the subject in motion.
    - Privacy Zones
    - Privacy Mode (Kills the video and audio feed - can be programmed to activate/deactivate using rules)
    - Smart Automations and Rules
    - Motion Detection Zone and Sensitivity
    - PTZ Controls to move the camera around (through Tapo app or connected NVR)
    - Powerline connectivity (if you know how to work it - special network router for this functionality)
    - Supports Google, Alexa and IFTTT.
    - Device sharing with one additional TP-Link account)

Features with Subscription (Tapo Care $4.99 - Free trial 30 days):
    - Cloud recording
    - Dynamic Tp-Link Tapo app notifications, i.e. Notification with video clip.

    What it doesn't support:
    - AI Based Perimeter Setup (such as tripwire/intrusion)
    - LAN port for wired connection

I’m not sure about indoor security cameras as I don’t like the idea that someone could potentially spy on me

      • This is the problem with having an ip camera that can reach the internet

      • Just do it in the common areas? I used to do it for when I was away and see my cat still lmao love speaking to my camera and her head whips up like ???

One time had a friend stay over and shocked them funny af too lol

…but yeah fair could turn it off once home lol

    • Did they recently make Motion Tracking free without subscription? I noticed yesterday I could turn that feature on without getting a subscription nag, but haven't tested it out yet.

I've held off on buying more of these when I found out motion tracking required subscription but if it no longer does then I might grab some more.

      • yeh i had tapo for a while and im pretty sure motion tracking was not free.

but i just checked now and it it works… they must have changed it?

      • It's free. Been using it initially but then stopped as it interferes with AI Person notifications when also connected with NVR. Weird bug if you ask me.

    • The Human and Baby crying detection modes are only available with the Tapo Care subscription on mine.

      • It's available free of charge on C210.

      • It has always been free on mine, have been using the camera for 5 months now (personally I don't use baby crying detection. I tried it initially and turned it off)

  • What is the difference between UK and Aussie varient?

Is it same with the difference only being the adaptor?

    • +4

The error page on the UK one says Blimey
The one on the AU says Crikey

  • +1

I used this to keep an eye on our apartment overseas, in a pinch it works great, video quality is fantastic and the app is pretty responsive too.

  • +2

Price matched at JB hi Fi. Hopefully comes with Au adaptor.

    • +1

It's a steal if they price matched the AU variant for ~$44. Amazon selling AU variant for $69. I doubt JB carries the UK variant. Back when it was $63, I did a pricebeat at Officeworks for ~$60.

    • Did you price matched with JB online or in store?

      • Instore

    • +3

how did you get jbhifi to price match? they just told me they can't as it's UK Amazon!

      • Just told them that i would like to price match Amazon (the item is on amazon.com.au). He went to check with his mange. Come back and told me that he will price match it.

        • just went on the Live Chat and got rejected. The staff asked for the basket/proof if someone else managed to price match this one lol

  • +1

Can someone recommend a good baby monitor? 1st time Dad

    • If you are looking for non-Wifi baby monitors, I would recommend the Vava Baby Monitor. Has good display and range, tilt and zoom, good monitor battery. But No storage.

Looks like they are no longer on Amazon, but u cud get it from Catch.

    • This one is good. Has baby crying AI alert too.

  • +2

FFS bought this on Sunday. To monitor a mouse entry location behind the stove. PS night vision has been good!

    • +1

Interesting! Did you catch it on cam?

  • @Gloomy have a look to CuboAl best of the best.

  • Inuse yhe outdoors one and its fantastic. You can store locally or on cloud.

  • $20.32 delivery without prime!

  • Price matched at JB HiFi after checking with the manager … thanks OP

    • was that in-store or online? I got rejected on Live Chat and they asked for the basket

      • Same no luck with jbhifi chat.

      • In store Harbour Town Gold Coast

    • Did they give you the AU version?

      • Yes the AU version

  • Any recommendations for something that has remote viewing when outside the network? Ive got an old amcrest one that is a pain to setup remote viewing for so am after something with a smoother user experience.

  • Hi all. Could someone recommend outdoor camera to go with this? I want to stick with tp-link/tapo and not go with another brand so that I can use one app

    Thanks
