  • Gah, my Mango died and I needed a new VPN device and held off and held off and purchased one last week…

    • +1

      do the thing then

  • +1

Anyone have any feedback re mac address cloning with these things?

    • +2

it's a main function, even has it in the mango

  • can someone able to justify the user case of such product? assume this is travel related but maybe for niche profession such as event engineer or streamer who travels a lot?

    • I know people using them as routers in home labs.

share wifi in hotel or hotspot to multiple devices, chromecasts etc,

just log in once and the rest of the devices will be connected

      • hotel wifi sometimes has the gateway thing though

        • That's one of the benefits of these travel routers - you can bypass the hotel captive portal

          • @mandelbrot: i think he means how can you log on the hotel gateway via this travel router

Its a wifi router that can be used anywhere any other wifi router can be. Because it CAN be used as a travel router doesn't mean it has to be.

I use an earlier model, the Slate, as the router for my home network. I bought it specifically because a 5G phone can be tethered to it. I don't stream, so I don't use a lot of data, so a 5G connection to the internet provides more than enough data at a high speed at a far lower cost than an NBN connection would. The Slate recharges the phone through the USB tether, and the phone still acts as a phone at home and when unplugged and taken with me, so I only need to pay for one 5G phone plan instead of a phone plan for the phone AND and an NBN connection for the house.

One LAN port goes to the PC sitting next to it on my study desk. Another goes into the wall socket that connects to my home network for other ethernet connected devices around the house like the TV. And the wifi on the slate connects to devices like the printer and some "smart home" stuff that can only wifi connect.

      • Good setup, but you could also just pay for an extra SIM card to share the phone data. Then you do not have to tether the phone, or tether an old phone. You can use a 4g/5g wifi router with that SIM also. I have this setup and it cost $15 for the extra SIM and I get 80-100+Mbs, which is much faster than the NBN in my area.

        • Actually, I notice that since my phone upgraded to the latest version of Android, it gets even easier. The latest Android supports ethernet tethering. So I don't even need the Slate any longer. I just plug a USB-C to ethernet converter (with charging) into the phone and connect it to a switch, and I've got a home LAN with wifi and a fast internet connection.

          • @GordonD: That is quite nifty! If the speed and ping is fine then you are all good. If not then using a good 4g modem will dramatically increase the speed of the Wifi and any hard wired devices. My current modem Huawei B818 (or sometimes called a Cube) smashes my previous 4g modem in all aspects from what is achieved just from a 4g sim card (Voda). I am not techy enough to tell you how, but my old modem maxed at 20Mbps.

  • I have a GL-AR300M.

It works OK, except for some reason it doesn't resolve some domain names, Paypal.com being one of them.

    Any thoughts?

    • Assign DNS directly on your client device.

      • Cheers, I'll give that a try.
Any idea why the GL is failing to do that though?

I had the same problem with my Slate at one point. Thought it could have been something to do with the 5G phone tethered to it, or the phone company it connected to's network. So I followed the advice of someone here on OzBargain to configure the Slate to use Google's DNS servers (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4) directly. Problem disappeared.

      • Yep, that's sorted it.
        Thank you kindly.

It's back up with $10 off coupon! Be quick if you want one

  • I'm looking at the Slate AX for travel. Is there anything the Beryl can't do that the skate can?

    • +1

Slate AX has micro-sd slot, can connect to EAP networks and has one more ethernet port. Beryl AX has faster WiFi and faster WAN port.

      • Sorry I'm a bit unfamiliar with these things. My main usage would be when connect to say cruise/hotel wifi when we need to "login" by going to a certain website. Would the Beryl allows me to do that?
P.S. link posted in the above comment seems to address this but got 404.
