Write speeds are slower as the tracks are overlapped.

      • Depends on how you plan to use it.

If you're planning on writing all your Linux ISO's to it, it's a great drive.

If you're planning to use it as a boot drive for Windows, it's a rubbish drive …

        • Alot of people use SSD for boot drive now.

SMR is mainly now for archiving stuff.

@pinkybrain: Sure … but my statement still stands true!

It was meant to show how an SMR drive is best used, not to suggest that anyone in their right mind would be using an SMR drive for a boot drive.

Any good for NAS? I heard CMR is the go instead of SMR for NAS.

Pay the extra $44 and get the ironwolf equivelant.

    • +2

No, this is SMR, if you intend to use any form of raid or COW filesystem, this is bad.

  • ive bought quite a few 4tb ironwolf drives and at $116 with ebay plus i think thats the cheapest i have ever seen them also from Computer Alliance eBay
