Good value for an inexpensive 1TB 2.5" SATA SSD for those who are needing a bit of extra fast storage for games or use in a portable SSD enclosure.

This one is offering sequential write speeds up to 500MB/s, sequential read speeds up to 480MB/s with 300TBW endurance and pSLC cache instead of DRAM cache.

As for the technical aspects I checked out a heap of Japanese/Russian reviews and even asked Orico directly to verify. The 1TB capacity SSDs are using Intel QLC flash memory with either SMI or Yeestor controllers depending on the batch. Given that it's QLC and DRAMless this is why it's so cheap compared to other SSDs that use TLC flash with or without DRAM.

  • Clear is there any issues with overheating etc when using a portable SSD enclosure?

    • +2

Nah 2.5" SATA SSDs don't generate much heat at all compared to an M.2 NVMe SSD where they have no outer casing and generate a lot of heat under load.

Almost purchased one earlier today but they seem to have a high failure rate?

Same, I was looking at the Orico 1tb nvme but the reviews did not inspire confidence at all. Went with a Crucial p3 nvme instead.

      • Not sure about p3, but p3p is a nightmare

bro just wanted cheap storage that actually fits in smaller cases.

      • +2

Lack of m.2 slots is one reason.

      • +14

Pointless to use an SSD then choose SATA.

        • Not having to worry about overheating.
        • No m.2 slots.
        • Existing SATA usb enclosures.
        • SATA speed is perfectly fine for general usage.

Not everyone gives a shit about benchmarks.

      • pointless comment, without thought.

The 4T seems hardly on sale

    • 4Tb is in super high demand worldwide and prices keep creeping up because of it. People actually want sub $400 8TB NVME drives but the memory cartels…..that won't happen until 2030.

  • Thinking about this as a cache drive for my Unraid server. Thoughts ?

    • You might blow through 300TBW, it is not much for these types of things.
Also, NVME would be much faster. Not sure what cache you mean, but if ZSLOG…. go NVME

      • Outside of my understand. I think I add it to the "pool". It caches large files so its quicker ?

        • Honestly I've found it overrated, but your use case may differ.
I believe it works something like the ARC (adaptive reflex cache), unless you're noticing a slowdown, what will the benefit be?

          • @Commodore64: Interesting. I don't really transfer huge files. I'm have 20gb left on my 120gb I have in there. Dk maybe it's not necessary.

    • out of curiosity since I have a truenas server, what's the benefit of that?

    • Depends how slow your array drives are. Do you have an existing cache drive or pool?

If you have a small cache drive it may be worth replacing with this, especially if you run a lot of dockers or VMs.
