Spend the extra for an XT model…

    • +1

      OOS

      • +2

Managed to purchase one earlier beore it went OOS, and other resellers are starting to show new stock of various brands/models.

Given GPU's aren't regularly updated, better wait and buy the superior model.

        • It can't see it anywhere else available. Which store is the XT available?

          • +3

@Dienk: All of the MSRP models are currently sold out - You'll have to wait for a re-stock… And then you'll need to act fast, as the scalpers have bots auto-purchasing them and reselling them on eBay for 50% markup.

          • +1

@Dienk: Steel legend was in stock this morning at RRP at scorptec

            https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/graphics-cards/amd/11675…

Taichi for $1300 is ok and in stock, a nice card. Seems like the stock issues are nowhere near as bad as Nvidia so I’m just going to wait a month and set some price alerts on pcpartpicker.

            • @freefall101: I don't see Taichi have Vapour chambers in their product description. It just said nickle coated copper. Seems to have 8 heatpipes compared to 7 from this morning's Asrock MSRP 9070XT post.

              • +1

@Edyolo: Yeah, the thing is 9070 (XT) coolers are oversized even at MSRP. The vapour chamber does not bring a big cooling benefit.

              • @Edyolo: The Taichi is larger than my Asus Strix 3080, and that I never even hear the fans kick into gear. It'll cool it just fine.

Vapour chambers are brilliant in laptops but when you have so much area to spread the heat over it's not a problem.

            • @freefall101: bought one taichi, had no choice, but it's not a bad choice.

      • Gigabyte XT available but $1399

Nice OC at 3060 but missing PTM. Definitely better options out there once they are available

    • Not necessarily. They come online intermittently then go back OOS. If you refresh the sales pages a few times every day you will get lucky eventually. At least that's how i got mine (although still hasn't been shipped yet)

If you leave them stock, then yes.

But the very efficient (low TDP and clock) non-XT respond well to overclocking, whilst the high power and clocks of the XT respond well primarily to under-volting.

When you do the above, it approximately halves the performance difference between the two. And this makes sense when you look at the hardware difference. The differences in hardware only explain about half of the performance difference, with the remainder being the way that hardware has been tuned (non-XT going for efficiency, XT going for performance).

Halving the performance gap results in the value of each card being near identical (FPS per $).

    • For 1050 it is priced well (for a shortage).

    • Gonna go with the non-XT because otherwise I'll have to upgrade power supplies as well.

And looking at power supply prices, well, God damn inflation.

  • +3

The XT model is like 20% faster for 10% more price.

But this clocks it 10% higher, so I guess the difference between this and XT would be around 12%?

Not bad considered its 10% cheaper and loose 12% performance.

Only 2% value and saved you from waiting the XT model, which is like a lottery.

    • +1

Not really. 12% faster on raster.

    • +6

I like the non-xt model for its significantly lower power draw. 220w vs 304w.

This will comfortably replace my rtx2070 super without a new PSU

I wish AMD would build a 5080 Killer. Id happyily swap from my 4090. Nvidia pricing is redic.

    • +13

Can you explain why anyone would replace a 4090 with a 5080? The best justification I can think of are the new ai features which won’t really affect many users.

      • +3

You wouldn’t. This dude is just blowing hot air.

      • same reason they line up at 3am to be first to get the new Iphone x something super pro max to replace their obsolete 1 year old iphone x something super pro.

Bruh the new one has MAX in the name, its like gotta be heaps better.

      • +4

I wouldnt, my point is i want AMD to start making good advances at the high end so I can give my money to AMD, thus why Id be happy to trade in my 4090 for a 5080 killer being that i would have a card thats better then a 5080 and not having to spend 5-6k to get a 5090 to replace my 4090. TLDR; Id like an AMD card thats better then my 4090 but doesnt cost as much as a 5090.

        • Apart from ray tracing the 7900xtx was a 4080/super killer while being much cheaper.

This generation they swapped over to AI for upscaling and frame gen. My guess is that instead of hoping it would be good enough they wanted a generation so they could iron out all the bugs.

    • AMD have said theyre not going to make any high end cards anymore.

      • I know, thats why I said WISH

      • +2

Well for RDNA4 at least, that could change in the future

  • I don't know much about gpu history. Will the 7800 xt get a price drop in the coming months? It's sitting around $730. Black Friday was about $650

    • +3

It will go up… they are no longer manufactured anymore.

      • +2

With this generation actually having decent (viable++?) RT/ML performance and getting CNN based FSR, older generations may actually see a cut in price as they're quite a bit behind, tech wise.

    • +4

You might be better off waiting to see what comes out of 9060 XT when it gets released. If for FSR 4 alone. Or if you are happy with 7800XT then buy it now. But if stock of 90x0 series gets better than 7800 might be on clearance in couple months since they no longer exactly sell like hot cakes. But there might also be none left by then like mentioned :-D

    • +2

You'd be lucky to find any last gen cards. I was looking for a 7900xtx/gre. Could only spot a solitary listing of 7900xtx at centrecom for 1799.. Way above the ATL of 1349ish.

So.. I think the best time to get a last gen card is behind us.. it's either used market or waiting for the new cards to settle down..

    • +1

youre better off looking for a 2nd hand 7800xt / 7900gre / 7900xt from people who've upgraded to the latest gen GPUs.

  • +3

1299 Flagship is also in stock Taichi OC

    • +4

Be aware this card comes with 12VPWR connector

      • The connector isn't an issue for a card that draws this kind of power.

    • Doesn't seem to have Vapour chamber too in their product descriptions. I recall some highend 9070XTs do. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Still rocking with my 6800 bought in 2022, gonna wait for a GPU selling at same $700, but double 6800 performance.

    • +2

Also on a 6800, it's wild how expensive these cards are for 30-60% improvements over this card. Partly because the 6800 was a beast for its price point, but also because GPU prices now are completely (profanity). Annoying because I'm keen for something to bump 90fps for VR but the minimum there would still be $1300-1500 or more.

    • +1

Just how expensive those 5nm nodes are

    • +1

Mate ngl 6080 is goat from AMD, draws hardly any power and has awesome performance

    • I nabbed a red devil 6700 xt year or so ago ex mining GPU for $550 or so, waiting for a suitable upgrade round $7-800, I run ultra wide on heavy modded Skyrim and wouldn't mind a sensible performance uplift but man these GPU prices are wack.

      • Wherw do you find ex mining cards?

        • Ebay back a while ago, harder to come by now

          • @Cas3232: I suppose if the BTC price crapps itself then there will be a lot more.

  • +1

Just letting people know the xfx 9070 xt swift could be coming on Mon or Tues. I saw their calendar and they say it might not be accurate. Something to keep in mind.
