  • I grabbed one from mwave on Friday for $79. Decent price for these 1TB drives, thats for sure.

  • +8

Given that the projection that NAND flash is going to sharply decrease in price over the next quarter due to mass production, I am holding off until the end of June. Expect these drives to be in the 50-60 range.

    • 50-60 so soon? I doubt it, at best we'll see drops on the 2TB drives since they tend to have worse GB/$ than the 1TB drives.

      • +1

Yep, looking at a few projections, NAND will come down a far ton. Those 2/3/4TB drives will crash to a very appeasing cost.

      • +1

        No it's VERY likely

The sales just aren't there,so it's either hold onto stock..or sell for less revenue

        • +2

…and i'll be there, to get my grubby hands on that $229 PNY.

          • @Vorsprungdurchtech: You guys got truck load of some PNY SSDs recently, can't you get a few boxes of that model of 4TB SSD and sell them for $228?

        • +1

          Meanwhile at Jensen HQ

      • +1

1TB gen3/gen4 drives are 40$ aud equiv or even lower in china for the cheaper, no name brands and with crucial and samsung drives dipping below 60-70$ aud equiv often over there.

its only a matter of time we see the drop as well

        • -5

Samsung won't do warranty here for SSDs bought from overseas sellers.

$40 delivered to AUS with 5 years warranty and not the previous gen YMTC NAND with issue or inferior grade Crucial NAND? We can get full refund 4-5 years from now if it is faulty? That's the standard for SSDs where warranty is managed by retailer for the entire 5 years. The online seller in China won't close shop and open another in 6 months time?

          • +2

@netsurfer: eh mate did you read my whole comment? when did I say that people should buy ssds from china? all i said was that since china is already seeing an even sharper decline in ssd prices, its only in due time that we will also see ssd drop even more?

            • @Brrrrt: It is the first part I want you to clarify. The $40 AUD no name brand as how that would affect us here.

Also, why is our price here based on what's happening in China? Wouldn't US and Europe pricing be more accurate?

Once you factor in cheap logistics cost and competition there (+ dodgy sellers there), in a few months time, you can repeat the same statement again… China is now getting blah blah SSDs at an even cheaper price so AU price will drop again.

              • +1

                @netsurfer: I can't find any 1TB for AUD$40 on AliExpress. Most are > USD$45

                • -2

@timhn: You need to ask Brrrrt. Maybe not AliE. However, $45 USD seems unlikely since that's already way over the lowest PCIe gen 3 x4 1TB SSD price here (when discounted 1-2 months ago) with proper warranty. I am inclined to believe $40 AUD for el cheapo, possible inferior grade NAND 1TB on AliE do exist.

I have no issue with NAND price is trending downwards. My issue is all these recent SSD prices are so great in China statements all seem to lack details, which makes it really hard to determine the actual useful bit of information. Is it a hint that Samsung 980 and Crucial P2, P3 1TB are all due for price drop? Why not provide the actual details so we can judge and evaluate better.

We know 970 Evo Plus 1TB all time low here is $69 (obviously certain membership needed). But, if people show us multiple examples of 970 Evo Plus 1TB in China from reputable sellers for $59, then it is something worth noting. However, it really needs to be 970 Evo Plus 1TB coz Gigabyte 2500E 1TB was $59 in March (there could be other ones which are/were even cheaper).

            • +4

@Brrrrt: Mention China, and some people's comprehension and critical thinking goes out the window.

              • -1

@tetra: Yeah, mention China and there are so many cheap deals, but not going to actually tell you any.

Very helpful. We share Aussie deals, but people go there are so many cheaper China deals (but not going to tell you).

Show them, tell us. Don't assume we don't have friends who can help us buy them if needed.

                • +1

@netsurfer: That was not what was being said. The implication was that prices are falling in Australia, and since they have fallen lower in other markets, will very likely similarly continue falling in Australia.

As mentioned in the original top level comment.

                  It's not that hard.

                  • -1

@tetra: Which SSDs? P1 or P2, not interested.
Can't we see those deals? Why does it always take so many requests to even get people to post link to one of those deals? My Chinese friends don't do that to me.

                    • @netsurfer: How are you going to see a deal on future prices?

Going to keep being sarcastic because I'm pointing out your lack of thinking?

                      • @tetra: SSDs are cheaper in China so post them?

It's like saying I bought Thunderbolt SSD enclosures on AliExpress for $80 2 years ago so they will be cheaper here eventually.

                        • +1

@netsurfer: So, you always like this? or..?

                          • @tetra:

crucial and samsung drives dipping below 60-70$ aud equiv often over there

OZB deals, we can search for historical deals. My friends from China are not into SSD deals so they cannot tell me.

Basically, I would really like to know those deals (and if I know them, I would share). The main issue is those deals are not on AliExpress and I basically want to know how to get cheaper than AliExpress deals. If someone told you these SSDs are 20% cheaper in China, as OZBer, you don't want to know about the deals? Just knowing they are 20% cheaper in China is okay?

If Thunderbolt enclosures can be have for $80 now, I would post them on OZB.

                      • +1

@tetra: Last time when people raved about Chinese SSD deals, after repeatedly asking for details, an OZBer finally posted it. Problem is, that deal, the comments basically imply it was a bait and switch. A lot of Chinese buyers want that deal, but the 4TB version is not obtainable.

Then, the great Maxio controller + YMTC SSDs. Yes, eventually landed here, but the price drops from other 1TB SSDs plus the fact the retailer here has to do the warranty + profit margin, just no longer making it very attractive now (last time I checked, still available). The 2TB version isn't as fast (that's expected).

There was an item I really want and I saw a seller on AliExpress selling it at 40% off price. It was too fishy and 2 months later, that store is gone. Centrecom did sell 240GB WD Green for $10 one or two months ago, but I don't think it is objective to calculate SSD price per GB based on that.

Basically, post those cool Chinese SSD deals here, then clearly I am totally wrong. $60 Samsung Evo Plus 1TB deals, let's see them. I'd rather see those deals and proven wrong.

          • @netsurfer: I see what Brrrrt is saying. He is using the cost of no name Chinese ssd's as an indication of cost of things to come.

      • MP33 2TB was $99 few days ago.

  • How does this compare to 980?

    • 980 is dramless no?

    • +1

970 Evo Plus is better than 980. 980 is PCIe Gen3 like the 970 Evo Plus but doesn't have DRAM,

    • +1

The current batch of 970 Evo Plus is consistently better than 980. One reason is the new version has a new controller.

However, most reviews are for the older 970 Evo Plus. There is, however, a down side of 970 Evo Plus, the TLC write speed is slower. The current / newer batch has a larger dynamic SLC cache. In general, that's better for most people, until the SSD is filled up to above 80%.

      • FWIW the 970 Evo Plus I got a couple of weeks ago has the "old" Phoenix controller (based on images of the board layout and the part number ending in BLR, I didn't pull the sticker off to look at the actual controller). It was manufactured in April.

    Man I am spewing….paid $79 at Scorptec!

    • same here!! :(

    What's the caveat with centrecom?

    • +1

a history of cancelling orders once they realised a deal is posted on ozb.

will not fulfill item when said items are still instock and listing back to in-stock a few days later.

      • +1

Oh wow, what a bad marketing strategy I see..

      • What's their problem with being listed here?

    • Their support is also not trained, so for the less tech savvy its better to avoid

  • +2

Dont have enough m.2 slots for these T_T

    (Already using 990 Pro 2TB, and 980 1TB)

Probably will get these in the future.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/UGREEN-NVMe-Adapter-M-Key-B-Key/dp…

    • Always go for the biggest you can with M.2, as you are limited by the number of slots. I'm running 4x 2TB 970 Evo Plus/980 Pro, and 1x 4TB Team MP34.

    • If you don't mind AliExpress, you can get cheaper one.

If your motherboard supports PCIe Bifurcation, then you could have additional 4 (but you have to sacrifice your GPU big time though). But then you need something like this:

      https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004904587046.html

P.S. too lazy to find the cheapest card. There are branded ones from Asus, Gigabyte, MSI and Asrock, but they cost $$$. If your board doesn't support PCIe Bifurcation or you have no idea what I am talking about, don't get one of these coz. only the first m.2 slot will work, the other 3 won't work at all.

      • My GPU is vertical so I cant use the remaining pci slots with cards as such, need something smaller profile.

      • Beware , your motherboard needs to support PCI express bifurcation.

      • Ive got a question if you know the answer to this. My motherboard has 3 PCI slots I could use:

1 x PCI Express x16 slot (PCIEX2), integrated in the Chipset:
        Supporting PCIe 3.0 x2 mode
        * The PCIEX2 slot shares bandwidth with the SATA3 4, 5 connectors. The PCIEX2 slot will become unavailable when a device is installed in the SATA3 4 or SATA3 5 connector.
        2 x PCI Express x1 slots

Does this mean the x16 (with x2 mode) can support two PCI 3.0 SSDs? (mobo is B550 AORUS PRO V2) so similarly, an M.2 with each of the smaller x1 slots?

  • Need more than 1 TB.. Mobo don't have enough slots lol

      https://www.centrecom.com.au/pny-cs1031-2tb-m2-nvme-ssd $118
      https://www.centrecom.com.au/team-2tb-mp33-m2-pcie-nvme-gen3… $119

Warning: both have NAND lottery. I know for the PNY one, there is at least 3 possible NANDs (could be more): YMTC, Crucial (but inferior grade - basically not 100% perfect cells), Toshiba.

KC3000 2TB is being discounted ($199). Unfortunately, SN570 2TB and SN770 2TB are not discounted now. WD "seems" to do something a bit unusual on those two for 2TB. WD puts a really large dynamic SLC cache on those (compared to the 1TB versions).

Then, there is that $229 4TB SSD which sold out too quickly.

  • thanks got one for me and one for gf
