it has 2 x display ports

      • Included storage is sata or nvme?

          • @Taskern1: That’s 1x nvme slot supported just as it’s 1x 2.5 sata supported

It’s just a generic ssd as to included storage in the specs

              • -7

@untech: Thanks but the question was as to what’s included. It’d be a case of buy or not buy if it was sata

                  • @untech: Thanks.

You advise to put an order through now? I’m collecting from the store but if you have plenty of stock I’ll just arrange by phone tomorrow

                    • +1

@0jay: place now, select pickup. can collect tomorrow.

                  • @untech: @untech I didn't leave a note in the order but did email through requesting an NVME SSD and for the SATA cage to be included as I'll be adding a secondary SSD.
                    Will this be okay?

                • +3

@0jay: Surely on a quad core low power CPU machine from several gens ago, nvme vs sata is like worrying about mag wheels on a Fiat?

Don't get me wrong, I love these machine form factors and have four of them. But I can't even remember which ones have m2 versus SATA drives because it doesn't matter in the slightest.

                  • +3

@rumblytangara: It's probably more that they want the nvme drive so they can slap a higher capacity disk in the 2.5" slot (maybe even mechanical)

                    • @knk:

they can slap a higher capacity disk in the 2.5" slot

                      The very same.

                  • +2

@rumblytangara: If I’m going to whack in a high capacity drive, I’d like to be able to chuck it into an empty space and utilise the included drive for the os as distinct from having to source two drives to get it into a spec that suits me.

It’s not about anything more than being in a position to utilise included capacity while significantly expanding storage in an affordable albeit slower 2.5” form-factor.

              • @untech: I’d prefer an NVME. Can you check if there is stock and I’ll order now.

    • -2

You're not wrong though. Extra step to connect to your tv is a bit annoying.

      • +4

Buy $12 adapter. Plug in cable. Move on with your life.

      • Not really… open protocol is better than closed protocol hdmi.

      • +2

There's no extra step required - just connect a Display Port to HDMI cable, and, that's it 🤷🏼‍♂️

        • +1

Will it transmit audio e.g dolby atmos

          • @Safoan: No Atmos, but yes you’ll get audio out with an DP to HDMI adapter. It should support multichannel as well.

Even if this did have a HDMI port it would likely be an older spec port which would be unable transmit Atmos anyway.

  • +9

Great little machines. I run one as a Plex / Unifi / HA / torrent / etc machine, one as my wife's desktop PC, and another attached to the TV for streaming some stuff that neither plex nor the TV can do. Highly recommended.

    • What files don’t go through Plex for you? I notice mine doesn’t like AVIs

      • +8

It's not stored files, it's a particular site out on the net that streams the bi-monthly Sumo tournaments live from Japan. We're huge Sumo fans :)

        • +4

          The best kind of sumo.

    • +1

Can you play large size hdr/dolby vision stuff through plex on these things?

      • yes, I use it for 4K HDR with atmos streaming to my LG OLED TV. Works perfectly fine.

        • Thanks mate!

      • They won't transcode 4K but provided it's in a format that whatever your end device is using can use direct play on it will be fine.

        • I use nvidia shield and it can usually direct play everything so i think this should be okay?

          • @Groovyuvi: I assume so but I'm not personally familiar with the shield.

    • Got one for this. Cheers.

    • How big are the rips you're playing?
Most of the time I try to play the remux 60gb+ movies (direct play), they shouldn't be a problem right?
Also wondering which hypervisor you're using to run everything?

If I get this I'd like to run Plex with big files, Home Assistant (pretty heavy with lots of integrations and addons, also unifi local controller

Hoping to get confirmation that it'll run fine so I can pull the trigger

      Cheers

      • The biggest ones I have run is 30GB. Unable to test any bigger because I don't download any bigger rips than that. Mostly in the range of 10-15GB. And I use it solely for Plex so haven't run any VMs.

Can I get some details on what kind of home automation you are running?

        • +1

That's a broad question, it's mostly not processor hungry stuff.
          - Usual motion sensors turning on/off various lights throughout the house etc
          - Washing machine and dryer finished notifications throughout google homes and phones
          - Phone room detection throughout the house using espresense
          - phones reporting locations while driving so when we turn into the street the gate opens, lights turn on, and disarm the house alarm. Among automations depending on where we are (shops/school etc)
          - Sunrise/sunset automations
          - Thermostat adjusting, and turns on while we're coming home if too cold or too hot
          - Home theatre automations such as dimmings the lights etc when movies start playing

But further down the track I'd like to start running frigate and making this mini pc the recorder for 8 cameras, so I can ditch my old hikvision NVR

I've just had a quick count, and I have over 100 automations lol

          • @sirs2k: Are you using IFTTT?

Any guidance on where to get started on this? Any applications or products to look into?

I am fairly techie but have been putting off automation stuff in home for a while.

            • +1

@jedimaster: Nah mate, IFTTT is very old
Look into Home Assistant which acts like the brain which then you can connect all sorts of smart devices to it (via wifi or Zigbee).
Where it really shines, is when you start building automations based on triggers and conditions. Imagination is the limit pretty much

If you have a mini pc like this then you're off to a great start. The learning curve might be a little steep at first, but it's still MUCH easier than when I started using it 6 yrs ago lol

Here's a quick video which should get you started

  • +3

I would love this. I aint buying it. I aint.

  • I clicked the link but cannot confirm it will do 4K at 120hz via DisplayPort. I also just read that some DP support audio, does this one?

    • +4

Neg, the 6500T maxes out at 4k@60 via DP because of the IGP limit.

    • +1

It can't game at 4K120 anyway (the onboard video is nowhere near powerful enough) so it doesn't matter 👍
Desktop use is fine at 4K60.

  • -1

    Hybrid hard disk? Mechanical/SSD?

    • ssd as per the specs but pending as to sata or nvme included

  • -1

what is the psu watt? can i use the psu for ATX tower spare pc?

    • +2

No, it's an external power brick. 65W I think.

      • +2

        yes, 65w power brick

  • Do game servers need gpu? I have a Minecraft one running, but I want to make a conan exile one and a project zomboid one.

Also, tangential question, is 20mbs upload enough for these games as servers? It should be, by my knowledge of how game data works, but I just want to be sure. I don't have gigabit internet in my area yet for the 50mbs upload.

    • +1

Most servers won't need a GPU, no, since it's not rendering anything. There are some exceptions but should be fine - but definitely want more than 8Gb RAM.

20mb/s upload should also be fine for most games, but again depends on the game and the number of players as well as other network usage. But you won't be hosting 50+ users on this kind of PC either that would choke your network uploads so won't be an issue.

      • Sweet, thanks. I'm interested in these machines because of the low price and 65w max draw. Figured that's a good start to making gaming servers.

Is 16gb ram enough for a server with at max 10 people at once? Can I run both game servers at once with 16gb ram?

  • +2

    Any 8th gen deals?

    • not at the moment

      • +4

Also waiting on 8th Gen deal

  • Is the RAM DDR 3 or 4?

    • +2

      DDR 4

  • Would this be good as a ESX or Citrix XenServer machine to run 3-4 VMs?

    • What OS are you running? I’d think the RAM and also disk space (if you don’t add additional storage) would be limiting for a Windows VM if you’re planning on 3 or 4, at least at the 8/256 configuration.

Might be fine for some headless Linus stuff.

      • +13

        Poor Linus

        • Oops :)

      • *headless GNU/Linus

    • -1

Yep, perfect for that use. You'll need to add way more RAM and probably extra storage too.

    • +1

4x VM's as long as it's lightweight like a LAMP server, PiHole, Home assistant etc.

only 4 cores so you can only split it so far.
You may also need to use a different hypervisor depending on compatibility, be prepared to shift to something like proxmox

  • Hi there,

Would this drive things like Zwift simulator? Would be handy to have a small form factor like this.

    • +1

Hey Ive been running zwift on one of these for almost 2 years. No dramas. I normally have plex or a youtube browser window going at the same time. If you start plex and zwift at the same time there is a little bit of chugging for a few seconds, but once everything is running they are fine. I bought Lenovo M700 Tiny PC COMPUTER POS i5 6500T 8GB/16GB 128/256/512GB SSD win 10 Pro MPN: 16Gb /512GB SSD.

  • How does this fair for a retro emulation station?

    • +7

Type “6500T emulation” into YouTube and you’ll get lots of real world examples of gameplay.

  • Why can't I get a 16gb ram and 512gb SSD combination?
    Available now, all good.

  • Is there any hdmi port ?

    • Doesn’t seem to have one as that’s that I was looking for as well. I usually connect mine to the tv so need one with HDMI

      • +4

Use a Display Port to HDMI cable, and it'll work just fine 👍

    • Should be a simple fix as it has USB C.
      USB C to HDMI adaptor.

      • +4

usb-c is not display supported. You can get a display port to hdmi cable and should work fine.

        • Sweet! Also an easy fix! Thanks!

  • +1

Random question OP, are new desktops (12-13th gen Intel) still being bought at a fleet level at the same volume as they were when the 5-6th gen were new? I'm assuming trend to remote working has shifted it to laptops especially after covid.

Just curious to see what the future supply looks like.

    • +1

Maybe not at the same volume, but a lot of business still have use cases for desktops Seeing strong trend for mini form factor compared to SFF or towers. Would also depend on innovation in AI

    • +1

Way less volume now - I'm involved with a fleet of around 30,000 machines at my workplace and since COVID we buy laptops 95% of the time - desktop orders are rare now (and they're usually very high spec machines for a certain purpose).

    • 1tb SSD? Probably HDD…

    • That's a SFF not USFF

    • Much bigger in physical size too

  • Great to use for PLEX with 4k HDR streaming, I have one and now it runs 24x7 as it uses barely any power

  • Where do these fit for torrenting?
Been wanting to torrent, but not willing to risk my main pc virus wise

    • +3

Downloading torrents isn't where you get infected, it's running the dodgy contents thereof on your main PC. As long as you use adblockers, stick to reputable sites, don't do stupid things like downloading a 'highly compressed' 20 meg MarioMovie.zip then you should be OK.

    • Yes.

Having a virus on any device behind the firewall would be a concern - you should be taking the same precautions on any device.

    • Doesn't matter if you torrent it on another machine if you're running the file on another.

      • Would be assuming I watch the file on the other pc?

  • How are these for a home assistant install? I'm currently running it through a vm on my Windows laptop and want to change it out to something else. Would this CPU be enough or should I wait for a newer gen or something? Also do I install something other than Windows on it or keep it as Windows? Never done this before so not sure how it works?

    • +3

4 cores at 3GHz- probably mild overkill?

      • Honestly I'm always of the opinion that overkill is better than under kill, so that works well for me :-)

      • +1

Sure, but probably cheaper than you’ll get a Pi for which is the general go-to, especially once you add in a case, AC Adapter and memory card. Even then the SSD in this is less likely to have failures in 12+ months time due to wear. Port selection is more convenient too, if you want to hook up a display for setup or whatever.

It’ll be a few dollars extra to run a year though.

Probably overkill but at the price I can’t really think of anywhere to go to save money and not sacrifice on performance of HomeAssistant.

        • +1

I have no issue with it, i love these types of machine.

Though I also have several Pi (pre price rises) and several Raxdas (after the price rises as they are cheaper swap ins).

Main downside of something like this is that there's still a moving fan. Otherwise they are great.

          • @rumblytangara: Does the fan make much noise? Thinking of using for HomeAssistant.

            • +1

@President Bartlett: Oh, the comment wasn't about noise. I just prefer low power 24x7 machines to have no moving parts at all- no need to worry about dust buildup or replacement. I'm sure it will be fine.

            • @President Bartlett: Work had these as the standard mini PC SKU a few years back (alongside laptops and other devices) and I can’t say I ever noticed any particular noise above any other office noise. Couldn’t tell you if the fan runs 24/7 or just ramps up on demand, but I never had any issues with this model noise wise. Had 3 or 4 that I’m fairly confident were the G2 on my desk as test systems that were generally powered on 24/7.

      • 4 cores at 3GHz- probably mild overkill?

Like buying an 18-wheeler for your grandmother to do her weekly groceries.

    • +1

      Yeah, it would be fine.

If you are thinking windows, Windows 10 reaches end of support in 2.5 years. If that is a concern, consider 8th gen plus as it supports windows 11 officially.

I'm running Ubuntu/Docker and if I eventually set up home assistant it will just be another docker container.

You could look at older deals on the old USFF PC deals to get an idea of what others have done.

      • Honestly I don't know if I've decided on whether to keep windows or not… I've used docker for windows and it sucked and I hated it, so not sure what the best way to go forward is for it. Also I currently have a home assistant set up on Windows and don't know how easy it'll be to transfer over! Decisions, decisions!

    • +1

There is a great YouTube video on this topic running home assistant on mini pc vs pi (especially given the pi 4 shortage) from Andreas Spiess: https://youtu.be/rXc_zGRYhLo

      • That's pretty perfect, thanks for that!

  • +1

I actually have one of these operating as a little server running 2 SSDs, one in each slot in a software raid 1.

Works very well and minimal power consumption.

    • With or without TLP?

      • TLP?
