    Who is Paul Jones?

  • How do these compare to the S3000 pro?

    • +7

They are the premium version of the s3000pro 😁

A few reviews said better but not double the price better. But at this price it’s amazing.

      • +1

So better audio quality but much lower output

        • +1

This is the premium version of the S3000 Pro

          • +1

@bobvegas: Thanks. With further reading it looks like the A300 have to connected together with a cable while the S3000 pros and A300 pro don't. If the A300 pros came at a similar price to this deal I'd be all over it. As tempting as it is I'll sit this deal out

      • is that worth to upgrade if I got s3000 pro???

  • This or KEF LS50

    • Try listening to each and see which you prefer.

At this price though these are will under half the price of the ls50.

    • +1

Having just bought a pair and heard the LS50 (non-meta version) at a HiFi Show, I'd say these ones from a sound quality POV - definitely.
The LS50's are 7.8 kg each, whereas these are 12 kg each, and are also physically larger. Size and weight tend to matter (as a crude measure) when it comes to hi-fi equipment WRT sound quality, construction materials, etc.

  • Horn Loaded Ribbon Tweeter! Tempting, however, I am using passive speakers.

  • +1

Can someone please explain to a sound layman like me what the deal is with these? Compared to a mid range sound bar or PC speakers I normally use.

    • +12

An example, music or basic tv shows at a minimum are made for stereo sound. Stereo sound is made of a pair of speakers, one to the left of you and one to the right of you. Quality stereo speakers are able to project sound to make it sound like it’s coming from the centre, as well as left and right physically. Soundbars can’t do this as they are just one box in front of you.
These speakers have large drivers at 6.5”, and seperate tweeters of very high quality. This means that you get a very full and complete sound from each speaker, which you can’t get from a soundbar as it’s a collection of tiny speakers and a large sub with nothing in between.
I replaced my 7.1.2 Samsung soundbar with the s3000pro and it’s infinitely better in my opinion. I never adjust the sound or settings, every tv show and movie sounds natural and dialogue sounds perfect all the time. Bass is accurate and CAN go deep, but doesn’t often as that’s the way it’s meant to be, no booming bass constantly.
You could sit back and appreciate music with these, you will hear sounds and instruments you wouldn’t hear on your soundbar or pc speakers.

      • excellent, thank you!

    • +2

One consideration: A soundbar or PC speakers rely on tiny, tiny drivers maybe 50mm across. They cannot do anything approaching convincing bass (100Hz wave is 3.5M long, the max distance a 50mm driver is going to move might be a couple of mm, and 100Hz isn't even that low).

I honestly have no idea if these Edifier speakers are any good or not. I associate the brand with cheap and cheerful, value for money. Perhaps they are trying to move upmarket slightly. But PC speakers and soundbars are generally quite terrible. But that's totally fine too- they are convenient, and most people including myself just don't care that much and don't pay close attention to audio quality when watching moving pictures.

      • These speakers specifically have reviewed fantastically, very highly recommended, and betters many other brands that are much more expensive

        • +2

I stopped trusting most audio review sources years ago… they might be good, wouldn't have any confidence in what reviews say unless they are from very specific sources that I trust and understand the taste of. When I dipped my toes into audio, I was absolutely amazed at how bad reviews were- people even review speakers over Youtube. Blew my mind that people could think they'd hear speaker quality when played through another unknown recording chain, then pumped out of PC speakers.

Hell, most audio reviews seem to think that KEF LS50s are good, and I hate those things. So no way would I buy speakers over the internet without a crapload of research and cross checking from people with similar musical preferences.

Personally, I just went and built my own speakers and went through three sets and five designs before settling on my final ones. Which I consider 'good' but not 'audio snob.' By no means expensive, either (except in terms of hours).

But if these Edifier things really are good, then that's great. There are far too many expensive but crap audio products out there.

          • +1

@rumblytangara: Hahaha! I agree!! I went ls50 —> klipsch the fives—> —> s3000pro. They were almost 1/3 the price of the others too. Insane.

      • I should add that it's not all about driver size either for bass. I compared two TV setups last week. One using a soundbar which included a pair of 5" drivers, the other using bookshelf speakers with similar driver sizes. The soundbar fell off a cliff as it got down below about 200Hz, and the bookshelf speakers did 'okay' down closer to 100.

This was just testing by ear, I wasn't going to dig out a calibrated mic and fire up software just to test TV sound.

  • Do you need to use a sub with this? Also, anyone tried these for desktop pc?

    • +1

I am using it for a desktop pc, also I am an audiophile with a bunch of much more expensive headphones.
I got a large size desk and Alienware 55-inch monitor, so it looks not too bad.
enjoy the music or give you an immersive feeling watching movies.

    • You would need a sub for deeper bass, yes. These only go down to 40Hz, while a good sub goes below 20.

Do you NEED a sub though? No, it will work without. Just lacking in the deeper bass, as all bookshelves do.

  • My Cambridge audio amp has a problem.. this could simplify it if it's ok…

    • Not small though for computer desk..

  • I am so tempted! But I am already using the S360DB for desktop.

100% would buy if it was at this price on Amazon, but out of stock on there. I just hate dealing with any companies now outside of local shops like JBHiFi and others, or if it's online then I strongly prefer Amazon.

  • +1

Surely these need WiFi streaming to get anything close to audiophile quality. What's the cheapest option for that..bluesound?

    • Easiest for audiophile quality would be USB input, it has its own DAC in it.
The WiiM Mini is also good to allow wifi streaming often at $115 on Amazon.

      • -1

        <whoosh>

But what these speakers really need is BlueMolar 6.8

    • I added AirPlay (version 1) functionality to a DAC-Amp using a second-hand Apple TV (3rd generation) - Model # A1427 via its Toslink / Optical output.
I think it should work with this active speaker.

  • Showing as out of stock now.

  • OOS

  • ffs…just about to place the order

    • +1

      as if

  • Didn't last long:(

  • Anyone got their order processed or shipped?

  • Hey all, I've just purchased a pair and they are back in stock it seems!

  • +1

Back in stock! Get in quick!

    • pulled the trigger. Yesterday missed when comparing parameters, lol.

  • OOS again

  • Anyone else had any issues with their order being cancelled?
I placed an order last night which was cancelled and again this afternoon. Sad times.

  • If you missed out, don't feel bad. IMO you are better off with some nice passives and cheap amp. This thing only has 1 year warranty

    • I'd welcome any suggestions of good passives around/below this price with these connection options :)

    • Warranty aside, can you please clarify your point "you are better off with some nice passives and cheap amp". For my PC speakers, I am currently tossing up between the two options below and your knowledge might be really helpful.
      1. spend ~$100 on a second hand Edifier R2000DB
      2. spend <$300 on a mini amp + second hand passive

  • Can anyone recommend some decent speaker stands? Not too keen to pay the $250-300 for the branded ones that match these.

    • +1

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/354566010782

Pro tip, add them to your watch list. In a day you'll receive an offer for $20 off.

I personally bought these ones: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/255964927308

They gave me $30 off. They're the most OK speaker stands I've ever seen. Absolutely FINE. 2 thumbs on my hands. (Cheap wood, cheap vinyl cover, but do the job).

Alternatively get some metal ones if you can find them. Avoid any with glass on them.

  • +1

I just received my speaker 10 minutes ago, and the box is HUGE and really heavy.

    • How do they perform? Mine havent arrived yet but looking forward to try them out.

      • +2

Amazing…..got so spoiled I can't enjoy listening to my high-end headphones.

  • Are these better than the Audio Engine HD6?

  • +1

I tested mine tonight and they sound BRILLIANT!
In the same location, I had a pair of GoldenEar BRX Bookshelf Speakers (now ~$2800 RRP) + Loxjie A30 Desktop Stereo Audio Power Amplifier (~$270) and I'd say the Edifiers are better sounding in most respects. They are also bigger and much heavier than the BRX. Size and weight tend to matter (as a crude measure) when it comes to hi-fi equipment WRT sound quality, construction materials, etc. I can say I'm very happy with the quality of the built-in amplifier.
I can also confirm that you can add AirPlay (version 1) functionality to this active speaker by using a second-hand Apple TV (3rd generation) - Model # A1427 via its Toslink / Optical output. Bluetooth and USB also work quite well.
You can still buy the AirPulse A300 for ~$1400 ('full price'), and they still represent very good value for money at that price point.

  • P.S. From further auditioning, I think some midrange and high-end detail is not as good as the BRX speakers and they may be a bit bright, but the bass is definitely better. Whether the A300s are purchased at at $700 or $1400 price points, the buyer shouldn't be disappointed with the sound quality.
