Lovely to see - except we went on Virgin full luggage (golf clubs and bag) BNE to Launceston for 119 in Feb… Not really a sale when it's 10 more expensive and that's for the Lite fare

Especially when they land and find out that Hobart airport isn't anywhere near Hobart.

It's closer than Melbourne is to Tullarmarine.. and there's a skybus.

        • And far less traffic.

    • how's about return brah 😅

Are there flights to Bicheno ??

      • Strahan more appropriate

If you're going to spend a reasonable amount of time in Tassie, I'd certainly recommend taking 2x overnight trips on the Spirit. Yes, bit more expensive, but don't have to hire a car when you get there and can take as much luggage as you want in your car.

Did 2 weeks in Tassie this time last year and took the car. Beautiful place. Did a 2500km round trip from Devenport, Sheffield, Cradle Mountain, Launceston, St Helens, down the East Coast to Port Arthur including Maria Island, then across to Hobart, then straight up the guts back to Devenport to take the boat home via Mt Field National Park.

Hiring a car was cheaper than the price the boat wanted in our case. We also travel light and don't want to spend overnight getting to (and from) TAS. But I suppose it's down to individual preferences.

True. Back when I went, car hire was stupid expensive too.

There's also a lot of unsealed, rough roads in Tassie, so I was so much more at ease taking my car and not having to worry about returning a car to a rental place and them wondering about mud, etc.

I didn't mind so much the overnight trip. Turned up at Melb dock at 8pm, slept most of the way, and then arrived 7am in Devenport, feeling rested. I also enjoy boat trips though so I guess that's the difference.

        Each to their own.

        • Is a 4 wheeldrive ideal /better than a Toyota sedan (which I own) then ??

@melgirl: No I did it in a standard 2wd car. Just a lot of unsealed roads which can be corrugated etc.

Just that some rental cars have rules like "do not drive on unsealed roads" etc.

After a while I did get sick of some of the roads being poor quality (so have to drive slower) as the car felt like it might fall apart from the corrugations hehe. so I'd force google maps to use 'A' roads vs 'C' roads. Even if this meant a longer detour and more kilometres, it resulted in a quicker trip because I could drive faster on sealed road.

Also, my advice is to download an offline copy of Google Maps of the entire Tassie before you leave reception. The reason is that between many towns there is no phone reception, so cannot search google maps if not downloaded previously.

Or better yet buy and use a proper GPS navigation unit (if your car didn't have one built-in).

If you're using a phone carrier that isn't on the Telstra or Optus network you'll have trouble. Though I'm wondering where you went to get unsealed roads.

              • @Clear: Was Telstra reception - and lost reception frequently.

Lots of unsealed roads unfortunately. Wielangta Road was one - Google Maps actually directed us onto it, after a few km I turned around and forced it to go via A3. Another was Deloraine to Cradle Mountain, Google Maps directed onto a long section of dirt road that you couldn't really go faster than 40km/h on. On the way back, ensured went on sealed roads.

A few times going to waterfalls, it would direct going in some back way on a dirt road.

I guess party was our fault for not assessing the route before just setting it to 'go'. Definitely was set to 'fastest' route too, not some weird setting.
