It’s worth it
Thinking of getting a Bambino plus because i love cappuccinos
For $500 why bother with bambino plus and add grinder cost. Bang for buck Breville Express best value
I have a normal bambino and a barista express. The express is a much nicer machine to use overall. The bambino, while good, is designed to be small. No pressure dial, no separate hot water nozzle, less buttons. It also shakes the entire thing when making shots. Plus you’d need a separate grinder.
Do it man. I've had one of these for like eight years it's an absolute beast.
8 years is a good life span. Do you service it regularly? Some ppl reported fails after 2 years but dunno how they took care of theirs. Thanks. I have a Barista pro myself and very happy. Having said that I want a dual boiler now lol
I'm looking at the barista pro as my own machine when my house gets built - going off my family's current breville oracle which fully automated.
Will probably miss the dual boilers - are you seeing any issues with your unit? some people online swears it lasts a few years, whereas others have it breaking down within months of ownership which is odd.
I think people have issues with the dual boiler (leaks related to the o ring?), not the express. My express is going strong 5+ years, no service, just regular descaling/back flushing when the cleaning lights go on.
@johnnytran: Yeah true, my o ring leaks. We can buy replacement but I'm too lazy. Not really a connoisseur so doesn't really notice difference. It's a quicker machine and dial grind finer than express imho but I want a dual boiler. Haha
I've had mine for about 8 years too, and this month is the first time I've had issues. The pressure guage stopped working. But it still makes good coffee. I use filtered water and only descale when it flashes at me. With a clean it looks brand new.
Yeah I use it a lot. I also know someone else that has one maybe 9 years old still working with regular use.
I don't look after mine 'that' well. Just put a tablet through it every now and then. Scale isn't a big issue where I live, we have soft water.
I did have an issue early in the game, but I sent it away to Breville for a free repair. It was on the edge of the warranty period (just outside of it) but they didn't charge. I can't remember what part it was that failed, but it was repaired and fine since then.
Get it :)
I've had barista express for 11 years now. I don't maintain it at all, use it daily and it just keeps going. I'm ready to upgrade for a fancy digital screen version but it's annoying reliability keeps strong
Can you C&C from tgg eBay?
Yes
Just make sure your delivery address on the order is the same as your drivers licence. Niche problem but I have two addresses and it was a headache.
Yikes, I may not due to a move. I’m pretty sure I changed it on vicroads but can’t remember if I got the little license sticker.
How did you go about solving it?
I just argued with them until they gave it to me but it was annoying as hell. I had all the receipt and paypal confirmation so it was stupid. Maybe they changed their policy after this happening to thousands of people…
There’s a comment on the bonus gift pack link where a user who bought their product through an eBay store had their application rejected.. YMMV I guess.
Fair warning, but FYI you do get a standard Good guys invoice even when you purchase from ebay store. Might want to c&c though so it doesn’t say “ebay delivery”.
It really is worth it but remember there are more costs for the accessories that are a must to get a great coffee out of it.
Must
- digital scales to measure input and output
handy
- dose cup/flange thing to catch the grinds
- 2 in 1 tamp puck. Helps with consistent tamp
The only thing I have in your list is a dosing funnel - under $15 on eBay, or you can 3D print one.
The rest I haven't had a need for and I try a lot of different beans from different companies.
Yeah definitely can use the machine as is but I think scales helps with consistency.
Knowing input and output removes some of the guess work.
Scale was about $15 of Amazon.
The new models come with a dosing funnel. So longer need to print one.
Also, these have a plastic elbow internally that will let go eventually. Replace it with a metal one (ebay and about $10).
How would this compare to Breville Bambino with Smart Grinder?
Having a smart grinder is already an instant win. Bambino + grinder should be more expensive than this.
Banbino plus has a temp sensor fot one touch milk frothing. Also ready in 3 seconds. Better mechine for cappuccinos. Any Bambino plus deals?
not interested in Bambino Plus, know how to froth milk manually, it just more things to fail.
@firepower: comparison video

@firepower: This is not the plus one
@firepower: If you can afford bambino + smart grinder, they will be a better set up. Even smart grinder with a DeLonghi Dedica is a better setup than the Barrista express. I notice the limitation of the Barrista express grinder. But for now it is ok, i try to adjust the dose amount (between 15-17g) if i cannot get the exact brew time.
Ultra temting, but rba left no cash in my account
So raising rates is actually doing what it is suppose to do eh, get extra $ out of economy.
Yes, printing money out of thin air pumps cash into economy causing inflation, then ppl like me who benifit nothing out of gov assitances get wrecked when rba realizes what they have done and starts stripping that cash. Like a dumb simulation, FIAT system….
I have the Sunbeam Barista Max Black
EM5300K and wish I got this one instead, should I buy this and get rid of the sunbeam one or will I not really notice the difference? It's more this one has the gauge on it which I reckon would help alot when it comes to making that perfect drink instead of guessing
I have owned a Barista Express, Bambino Plus and a Dual Boiler. I never look at the gauge to see if I'm pulling a good shot.
What you want is a scale that do 0.1g changes. Measure 18-22g of coffee beans, and then grind down to a setting that gives you 36-44g of espresso in 25-35 seconds. That's the sweet zone you want to start off with.
From here, you can then fine tune your shots. If the shot is too bitter, then it is “over-extracted”, and you need your shot to flow faster, so you grind coarser. If your shot is too sour, then it is "under-extracted", and you need your shot to flow slower, so you grind finer. You do this with each set of new beans, until it is suited to your taste. You don’t have to throwaway shots, enjoy tasting your way through the process.
what about the steaming wand on either of those 3?
Dual Boiler has the best steam wand for manual steaming, Bambino Plus can do surprisingly good automated steaming, the Barista Express is the worst of the three - to get the best results out of it, you have to let the steam out into an empty vessel so that it builds up to full pressure, turn the steam off, dip it into the milk jug and then turn it back on before the steam pressure dials down again. If I'm not mistaken, this is the same steam wand that comes on the non-plus Bambino model.
This was one of the biggest workflow improvements I enjoyed when moving from the Barista Express to the Dual Boiler.
All three are perfectly able to produce silky, creamy, cafe quality steamed milk - but the Bambino Plus requires zero effort or technique, the Dual Boiler will reward good manual technique and practice, and the Barista Express has an annoying workflow to deal with.
Interesting you can pull shot with 18-22g with the barrista express? I can only do 15-17g with it. Maybe it depends on grind size
Apologies - that was meant as a general rule across all machines. With the Barista Express in particular the highest I could go is about 20g, maybe 21g depending on the beans. You're right it does depend on the grind size and proper tamping - don't be afraid to give it a good push!
If you find that the BBE's grinder isn't going fine enough, you can also adjust the inner burr settings - just look for a tutorial on Youtube :)
Will they price match their own eBay store with discount so I can use the Store Cash thing they got going on?
I just bought from store recently. Will they refund for the diff?
Doubt it. This is an eBay coupon, meaning GG would still get the full amount.
costco got them at 599; With a lifetime replacement I would rather go with them
What lifetime replacement?
Good machine at a great price.
Price is 599 today in ebay?
Went to the good guys Maribyrnong VIC, got them to price match with Ebay $540.
Received sms from the good guys a few days ago that if I spend $100 or more in store, I'll receive $30 off.
Went to Coles and bought gift card with 10% bonus. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/771265
540 - 30 = 510
510 - 10% = 464
Total out of pocket around $464 for Breville Barista Express Liquorice.
Great day :)
Gift card gymnastics FTW
Dang this is getting tempting
