I have been looking at this one. Still pricey but the cheapest it has been. Hopefully it is quiet and works well.

Is this useful? Feels like a solution in search of a problem. What's wrong with using a knock box?

    • +4

Apparently the "doonk" of the knock box is too loud? Like, I couldn't agree more with the "solution in search of a problem" statement.

    • +1

The knock box is loud, specially if you are making your coffee early in the morning. I am hoping this is as convenient as it is advertised.

      • +55

Maybe it's just me, but I think if someone is sleeping through the grinder & steam arm, they can probably sleep through the knock box. Alternatively, use a spoon and just break up the puck into the bin or something…
This isn't a personal attack, but I just can't imagine this ever being a bargain when using a piece of cutlery to just break the puck up into a bin would be… free?

        • -3

The grinder and steam arm are not loud at all. what I hate is the mess from the knock, this should sort the mess issue

          • +6

@wangsk: My grinder (Breville Barista Express) is WAAAAAAY louder than the knock box.

          • +1

@wangsk: what mess? are your pucks not perfectly formed with a firm but spongy surface, fully intact? if not, then you're doing something wrong- maybe your grind settings/ tamp pressure?

            • @derdew: nice and firm but sometimes it fallout when you have a second hit then it is everywhere…

          • +1

            @wangsk:

The grinder and steam arm are not loud at all

            What's the machine?

          • @wangsk: can confirm Barista Pro is also way louder than the knock.

      • +21

if your knock box is too loud you should probably take it out of the bedroom and put it back next to the coffee machine

        • +3

Knock box. Is that what he calls the wife?

    • Also curious!

    • +2

I was sceptical at first but I really like having it, makes a lot less mess and noise than the old knock box. Got an unopened one from fb marketplace for about $70. Definitely not necessary but it helps

      • +1

Agreed, got as a freebie from Breville promo and I love it.

    • I looked at these a while back, I can't imagine it gets the grind out any better than a knock box but for me it was more about size and being marginally tidier (maybe).

Some of the smaller knock boxes look a bit cramped and awkward to knock the grinds into. Id prefer a smaller one because the machine and grinder take up most of the space already. The closed top also makes it a bit tidier sitting on the bench

Didn't end up getting one in the end but I can see why some people might prefer it if they don't already have a knock box. This is also probably bought as a gift in a lot of cases rather than someone buying it for themselves

Probably the biggest problem for me was the 9v battery (apart from price)

      Is this useful?

      APRIL FOOL !!!

    • +1

Even a knock box is a bit overkill. I have a sponge on my sink ledge, i whack that and the puck comes out.

My coffee machine is in the kitchen and the sink is right there though

  • +1

Currently same price at Harvey Norman and also JB

    • I thought I found the one-time argain lol

  • +2

quack quack quack quack…..oh wait its not ice hockey related so diff product..

    • flying veeeeee!

  • +6

    What a stupid thing.

    • +2

      Yeah. It sucks.

  • +3

I just shake out my portafilter into the bin.

Less exciting and no flair compared to baristas, but it does the job for 3-4 coffees per day at home.

  • It is quiet and works surprisingly effectively. It is battery powered. I got it for free as a GWP with my Oracle. Definitely not a need to have item but it's nice :)

  • +2

Don't even need a knock box, just knock it on the edge of the rubbish bin. Boom!

    • +3

      That’s a knock bin, then.

  • +6

    Suck my WHAT?

    • +10

He actually is dying inside you bought it but for the sake of the marriage he is being nice.

  • +3

Think i'd rather the $88 in my pocket and use an icecream stick to scrape the puck into a bin if noise was an issue

  • +1

Is the knock box significantly louder than your grinder or steamer? Don't see what the point of this is.

  • +1

I think getting a Dosing Funnel would be a much better purchase than this.

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/breville-the-dosing-funne…

If you use the single wall basket and have the correct amount of grinds in the basket, the puck should not take much effort to knock out. For me, a gentle tap on the knock box (I use an empty greek yoghurt container as my knock box) is enough to get the puck out and it hardly makes a noise.

    • never seen that one before,

I got this one from Amazon which works well

      https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B094JMZ1DH/ref=ppx_yo_d…

    • Nice. Once again, the bargain is in the comments!

    • Yup, the dosing funnel is a must-have for Barista Express (54mm).

The pucksucker is only for 58mm, unfortunately.

      • +1

I didn't realise the Pucksucker was for 58mm only. Saw that it was Breville so thought it was for the 54mm range of machines.

I would have thought that most people who have 58mm machines should be fairly proficient at making espresso and with that, the puck should be fairly dry and not require much effort to knock out. If the puck remains very wet and hard to knock out needing something like the PuckSucker then the grind may be too fine or the dose is too low and allowing too much water to remain in the puck once the shot has completed.

My guess is that it is targeted at the Oracle buyers who rely on the machine to do almost everything for them so having the Pucksucker means no mess at all……

  • +3

Puck tells you a lot about the shot, I don't think that analysis can be done using this sucker lol

  • +8

This is why you cant own a home

    • Or the reverse, they're a boomer who made their money from having a mortgage from the 80s

  • wow..

  • Since getting a VST basket knocking out a puck has been a pain.
For 88 bucks I'm going via JB after work.

  • +3

People buying these types of “unnecessary” devices is probably why we have ongoing inflation.

    • Sure, "people" are buying things are the cause of the inflation.

    • duh!….we need to buy & use more useless electrical gadgets to save the climate change!!!

  • Added to wish list, will wait for it to get to 50% off one day.

    • I paid $72 on Good Guys Commercial about November last year, its $102 today.

      • Today its $88. With cash back offers, or something else down the line, Im quite sure I'll be able to get it cheaper for $72. Im in no rush. I can wait. This is at the bottom of my list anyway, its a nice to have not a must have. Until then my knock box is doing just fine.

        • Yes im sure with vouchers or Black Friday sales youll get it cheaper. Its not a must have, it's a nice gift or treat for yourself if you have the spare cash.

  • +5

I get nearly a 5kg coffee deal at my rosters for the money the puck sucker costs.

  • +3

Unless you have a disability why would you buy this and waste so much money you could rather spend on nice coffee? What’s coming next? The hand which comes out of the toilet to wipe your bum, because you are too lazy to do so?

  • +1

The Puck Sucker, made especially for suckers. Mine go from the portafilter straight into the bin. A quick shake does the trick. I rarely have to knock it.

  • To suck hockey puck? 😆

  • Can this be used for anything else? Asking for a friend

    • You can try it 😂

  • +1

hahahha….an idiot and their money are easily parted!

  • Get pucked!

  • +2

Ok so I bought it. Set it up. Works perfectly with my bottomless portafilter.
    It's bloody awesome.

  • 58mm. Anything for 54mm, or an adaptor?

    • +2

Honestly from what I'm seeing. A rubber washer with a 53mm ID and 60mm OD and a few dots of shoe glue would do the trick.
I can grab a 54mm porta filter of the spare and see it it fits ?

      Edit:

54mm Poratfilter fits and activates the switch, but you will need a rubber washer 1-2mm thick with the above ID/OD to make a seal for the suction.

  • -2

What a waste… Just get a knock box. Not messy and not noisey lol a gimmick if I've ever seen one

  • +1

Not a necessity but a great device. Saves space and keeps things tidy, plus it’s quiet.
