A Close Call on The Road

Hi can you have a look at the video and share your wisdom?

That guy suddenly turned left from the far right lane, I was on left lane. in a split second, I took decision to turn left and luckily there was no one on the footpath, my car hit the kerb hard, got on the footpath and could stop it before hitting the fence.

It was a miracle that car didn't hit my car. I saved right side of my car, left side of that car and also the fence of the property….

That guy came to me and said a dry sorry. He acknowledged that it was his fault. We exchanged number and licence. I didn't say anything (was in shock) and let him go since there was no crash…

The guy who lives in the adjacent home came out and asked if i am ok…. after listening everything, he said I saved all the properties….so it was like we all won the lotto today.

Then after 15 min that guy called again to know if i am ok. then I told him that I would go to my mechanic on Monday to check the wheel balance since I hit the kerb really hard….if I need wheel balance, will he pay my bill? He said, well you can send the bill to my insurance.

so my question is…if my mechanic can find any problem in my car due to this, how can I proceed?

I have NRMA comprehensive insurance.

I'll leave the insurance issue to others but holy shi+ what were they thinking with that turn

    • +1

      Bait and switch.

    • +1

So u r daying that i should let my insurance know this?

      • +31

Going up the kerb like you did at speed could have done some damage to your steering or suspension.

Might want to get it checked and if there is some damage I would be chasing it through insurance

        • got it. thanks

          • +2

@nataliaava: Yeah that is sound advice. Also make sure your rims, shafts and transmission cases are checked. Based on the speed you were going they would probably be okay but make sure you get them checked just in case

          • @nataliaava: At the very least, you will likely need a wheel alignment.

      • +1

100%; you good, guy bad - insurance take care.

        • +2

All your sentences are indeed FittyFitty 😅

      • Tell him to provide you with his claim number, make a police report, send the video to your insurer and tell them to commence recovery.
Should be an easy one for them.

    • +1

      what were they thinking

That's the thing; they weren't thinking. At all.

    • +7

      Sat nav said turn left

good drivers miss turns sometimes, bad drivers never misses turns

  • +31

thats some really shithouse driving. really shithouse.

    • +1

      Yes it is

    • +2

Unfortunately it feels like its a standard manoeuvre these days in Melbourne

  • +55

send it to dashcams australia. that's a good one

    • Is it an app or website?

    • +2

what is the benefit of sending it?

  • +19

Oh wow that’s a good video . Yeah it’s his fault and he should pay. I should probably invest in a dashcam. This is so useful for insurance .

    • +3

      Viofo A119 V3 is about $150 on Amazon, A129 (front & rear) about $250.
Can save you A LOT of stress.

      • +1

Do we get it installed by a mechanic?

        • I got an azmodo 4k and connected it myself to cig lighter. Didn't connect to battery.

          • @the1doood: I'm guessing with this, the dashcam turns off when the car is turned off i.e. it doesn't drain the battery.
What if you wanted dashcam to record when your car is parked, let's say at a shopping centre?

            • @ar7ist: Put a 3 way toggle switch to an always on fuse and with engine on fuse and you could choose which mode you want.

            • @ar7ist: I didn't wire that part. Since the needs are really low. I do think it has a small battery which can record a bit, not sure though.

            • @ar7ist: Not sure if this would work. Hook up camera to large power bank while power bank is hooked up to ciggy lighter.

      • A129 is $200 on sale + High endurance SD card $60 - I got a big 256GB just to be safe with a few days of history

  • +23

he said I saved all the properties….so it was like we all won the lotto today.

That's a weird thing to say.

Anyway, that Mazda driver needs to be reported, their licence taken from them and sent back to driving school. They didn't even bother to at least indicate ffs. In the past few years I've noticed that in both Sydney and Melbourne the amount of people who can't drive well has skyrocketed, honestly no idea what is going on in terms of driver ed these days.

Also please send this video to Dashcam Owners Australia.

    • +11

their licence taken from them and sent back to driving school

Nothing of that sort happens, at least in Melbourne. My son was crossing a road on his bike when a P plater ran the red light and hit his bike. Luckily my son didn't get injured. The P plater was reported to the police and the officer in charge said that the person apologised so no further action will be taken… Policing is a joke in Victoria.

      • +1

Did the apology cover the damage/replacement of bike?

      • I was riding my bike on a quiet street - Red P came out of a side street saw me but decided I wasn't a living thing and took me out. Broke my arm (collarbone) in two and several fragments have a big ol plate in it and 8 screws in it holding it together.

Honestly I hate these people so much!

Their lives are fine whilst the pain and suffering for me is enormous (days off work, couldn't pull my pants up or wipe my bum properly, wash my back or towel properly, couldnt do basic shh, cant drive for months, cant ride my motorbike, had holidays booked a week later that had to be cancelled and lost deposits) future plans are up in the air.
Meanwhile her life is absolutely fine, no consequences, maybe gets a fine if the police bothered - they wouldnt even tell me if she got charged.

Seriously hate these people, learn to drive you %$*^@&%$

        • +1

Sorry to hear about your ordeal.

  • +11

OMG! turn signal to right and turn to left from 2nd lane, great that you had a dash cam in an event like this. totally worth the cost of the dash cam.

  • +4

Pacific highway Turramurra, i always try and guess the location of dash cam videos.

As the other car had no physical contact with you, it will be interesting to see how this goes. You could send him the dry cleaning bill for your undies lol.

    • If you don't live near there, it's a bloody good guess. Not my local but I head up that way sometimes.

    • Goddam, you're right! When you said the location I thought it was going to be the opposite side of the highway, where X lanes become Y lanes in the no man's land of no lane markings. But yes, a surprise quick turn into Ku Ring Gai Ave.

  • +12

Sometimes it's better to let the other car hit you.Considered a single vehicle accident if you hit something else, avoiding the other vehicle. This is from first hand experience.

    • +22

i agree with you. but our brain always wants to save us in any way…. our natural reflex is to avoid conflict any way

      • +1

It's one of those unfortunate situations where our brain makes a quick decision based on natural reaction and best outcome. E.g. on a bend in a clifftop you would rather take the collision rather than drive over the edge. In your case lucky no pole was there, if there was it might have made you hit the car instead.

        • Which would have been fine because the reckless driving of the other driver would have caused the accident.

    • +5

Wow… that sounds logical but at the same time I really don't like the idea of it.

    • +1

      What do you mean?

A number of years ago I had an accident like that, car turned out in front of me from a side street (they were actually going across to turn onto the opposite side of the road and neglected to look for traffic on closest side of the road), swerved to avoid the car and mounted the median strip at quite a speed. Like $15k damage.

Had absolutely no problems with insurance. The only funny thing was about 2 years later I got a call from the insurance company saying the other insurance company was disputing how the accident occurred, I had to draw a diagram of how it occurred and never heard back.

  • +4

Nice save OP! I doubt there will be any damage to your car, but sure worth checking. Maybe show the dash cam video to your mechanic too.

    • that is a good idea. thanks . will do

      • +1

yes definitely show that footage to whoever is inspecting/fixing your car. Thats quite a hard hit so lots of things should be properly checked, not just the rims/tyres..Stuff like underbody panels and low hanging suspension, bushes, sumps etc.

  • +4

If there is damage, the other driver is at fault, but as there was no actual collision insurance and getting them to pay might be difficult. In some respects you are better to hit them and make it easy to claim insurance. Without the dash cam footage you’d be screwed if they didn’t hit you.

Anyway, get your car checked out. If it’s a simple wheel alignment, just pay for it, it’s probably not worth chasing someone for under $100. If it’s more, try your luck and maybe they’ll pay. But at this point, it’s all a big question hinging on wether there is actual damage.

    • hmmm thanks. will get checked. hopefully everything will be fine. even i don't want any issue. what is gone is gone. but i hope people will be more responsible

      • +2

Get it checked. Doesn't take much to do damage to the crap bushes they put in cars now. They are usually not cheap to replace.

      • Wheel alignment & balance, $140 in Jax Tyres. Don't forget to ask for before-after printout.

  • They didn’t hit you so good luck with this

    • +10

better say "i didn't let the stupid hit me"

      • That’s pennant hills rd too isn’t it, I’m glad you are
ok though and lucky you had the reflexes to not get injured - your car would have defs been written off if not worse.

        • +1

          pacific hwy, turramurra

        • reflex and luck.

1 second difference and it would be different story

  • +15

Full left lock, full throttle (if front wheel drive), yanking up the handbrake as hard as possible, then slamming on the brakes to complete a full 270° would have been the correct reaction to this scenario.

It would have saved your car, other cars and properties and asserted full dominance to the Mazda driver. You could have then high beamed the driver, beeped your horn twice and continued on with your day.

    Maybe next time.

    • +6

yanking up the handbrake as hard as possible

Aahhh the good old days. Pressing a button doesn’t have the same effect, especially when electrickery overrides it’s operation while moving.

      • +1

Not mention lane assist, auto braking, collision avoidance. Late model Mazdas even grab the wheel and scream at you if someone is in your blind spot so are less likely to allow bad driving like that.

paul walker from fast and furius

      • +1

Ironically that movie is on tv as we speak (9Go!)

        • Sorry to hear… thoughts and prayers.

  • +6

he owes you big time for avoiding the accident.

Credits to you for avoiding the accident.
a little bit of credit to him for owning up and calling to check up on you later.

    • hahahha thanks.

  • +2

What happens if you give the cops the dashcam footage and make a complaint that the guy ran you off the road?

    • +8

to be honest, my experience is - if you are not severely badly injured, no matter what is your loss - whether your car is write off or you lost your properties, police won't give a shit. they don't have time for this

      • +1

I was thinking more of a chain of documents to back up an insurance claim. If there's significant damage then you've got the dashcam footage, the police report number, the quote / description of repairs needed from the mechanic all related back to the accident they caused.
I had a couple of insurance claims over the years (not car related) and it seems like the more bits of paper there are the more likely it is to go through.
Also, are you sure it's just a wheel balance and not something else bent that could cost more? It sounds like he's happy to go through insurance so I'd just get every bit of paperwork you can and send it off.

        • hmmmm tomorrow will see my mechanic and lets see what he finds out

  • You were Lucky OP, AND the stupid Mazda driver too, very lucky that no one was hit as per suggestions.

Although yes you do deserve credit for being able to stop car effectively past the street kerb without damaging street properties.

But if the stupid mazda driver also did not see you, (and tried to slow down or stop) no matter your efforts of trying to dodge accident, It would have had happened. So some slight credit to that stupid too.

IDK what damage would have been done to your car, probably yeah get it checked by a qualified professional if you want to claim any damages caused to car (like wheel alignment or whatever). Now whether you'd be able to recoup all costs (including cost of inspection) or not I cannot say much about that.

  • +5

Wow that was mind bogglingly bad driving.

    • it is. thats why shared it here

  • -1

1st call NRMA Insurance, not OzBargain'surance.
They are in charge of the process if you need or want others to pay if there is any damage, which is quite possible going over a gutter square on.
Some fortunate anti crash near hit driving, and some very stupid driving all in one video.

    • if there is any damage

Really need to assess this before calling insurance. Ideally, have a crawl around under it, if you’ve got no idea then take it to your local mechanic for a quick inspection - this is preferable if you have a regular mechanic who will be willing to have a look for you because they know you’re a regular and will be back later.

      • thanks for the suggestion

    • +2

Having two not-at-fault rear-enders in the past, I would talk to my insurance straight away. Third party should be paying for the damage assessment.

You should get a professional inspection even if you're stuck with the bill. Could be some damage that is unsafe.

  • +1

When I have near misses, I always accelerate off the road

  • Wow! Well done! Close call

  • I look forward to seeing this in Facebook and seeing how the other members of dashcamownersaus feel about this.

I would've had some choice words for that Mazda driver.

  • +3

Wow, just wow at the Mazda! It's like they freaked out at the truck wanting to exit the servo and lost all understanding of time and space.

  • I would look to finding the driver's insurance provider and sending them the video, they would put up his premium's a bit for being a shit house driver.

    • i wish i could do that

  • +2

That's got to be one of the worst examples of driving in Australia I've seen, and I've seen a LOT of DCA/Scotty's videos.
