The scent of pixel fold in june and fold 5 in september are getting stronger !!.

    • +3

It's been all but leaked in full

      • Yuck. The bezels are massive.

    • Pixel Fold is also coming soon!

      • Given google's past record and issues with their newer devices, would you risk a folding phone from google?

        • you're right, goog's hardware quality has been on a downward trend
but is fold 5 worth waiting?

  • +37

    Do your research.

I bought a fold 4 back in December and the internal screen broke as I opened it last week (literally cracked as it opened) and Samsung's repairers are currently refusing to warranty repair it even though the phone had never been dropped and always in case.

Repair is more than $800 if not don't under warranty.

Great phone when not broken but something I thought was a low percentage change is turning into a pain in the ass

    • +8

Same here. Long time fold user (OG, 2 and now 4).
It’s an amazing device but a Samsung support is rubbish and doesn’t inspire confidence.

Luckily I have Samsung Care+ included in the original purchase as it’s only $99 for a screen repair. But after it runs out I’m definitely selling.

      A real shame.

      • +11

Good luck with your screen replacement, my experience with Samsung Care Plus was horrendous. They kept my phone for 6 weeks before I got it back. Each email or call said they have 'escalated' it to a 'superior' and this just happened 3 times a week for 6 weeks with no actual response from anyone.

The company (Asurion) that deals with replacements is absolutely shocking - no replies to calls, emails or direct chat.

        • +1

ah the same asurion that looks after trade in ? no surprises here.
they took the trade in money after 11 months, no apologies as well just email say hey pay up

        • Yeah Asurion is terrible. Emailed them about some trade in related issue and they got back to me…after two months. Yeah no thanks

          • @ilikeblue: Had a field day with them.

They had an error on their side, claimed that I purchased a phone and traded in a device when it was an error on their merchant website side.

Called twice no resolution. Emailed, no follow up.

Eventually called ANZ to launch dispute of charges. Provided evidence of communication and proof I never purchased a device with Samsung, instead I had gone with jbhifi.

Really really advise against using Samsung store and going with a trusted third party like office works, JB Hi-Fi, or good guys. Telstra and optus are good for trade ins.

If it wasn't because of the spen I wouldn't go Samsung…

        • Always pay with Paypal and then complain to them with evidence that the seller is not abiding by their terms of sale and demand a refund. Paypal will usually contact the seller and if they don't respond they may offer you a refund

      • Wait, they actually call it Samsung Care+?! They really do copy everything!

    • +11

Yea this is like one of the reasons I'll buy expensive stuff on Amazon even if it's extra. They literally don't care and will accept returns regardless.

      • This is 8 months in.Bought direct from Samsung. I’m not sure how long Amazon will cover you for?

        • +31

Well in this case 2 years. Amazon follows manufacturer warranty. I've return/swapped so many items when I mentioned to customer rep the manufacturer warranty. Amazon AU is an Australian Business and they abide with the ACL.

Not sure why I'm downvoted when I'm stating facts.

          • @dfg555: Same as you.
Bought my last 2 laptops through amazon after a few excellent experiences with returns with razer support being very average.

      • +1

Careful when doing this because they will ban you if the returns start costing them more money than they are making off you, they have algorithms so that it's all rosy until they turn off the tap when the algorithms find the customers they no longer want to do business with.

        • Curious if that happens if you can just make a new account.

        • I mean, if you return 3+ items per month for "does not meet expectations" then I would imagine being banned to be possible. Returning faulty items should be rare.

          • @simontadaa: I don't think its as simple as that. If those items are returned in 'as new' condition then it won't cost Amazon money and they may not penalise. Judging by the quality of some of my orders, they might be reselling many of these returns again 'as new' and hence there would be no loss to Amazon in that scenario for the return (besides the postage costs, but they seem to have great economies of scale here).

It also might depend on what sort of items, for example I have returned small items maybe 2-4 a month for the past 2 years and they've never had a problem with it, most of these returns have been 'as new' and reason is generally 'not compatible' or 'not as advertised' or similar.

Say for example I purchased a new pair of AirPods or a Laptop and then returned that, they are most likely going to lose hundreds of dollars on that return and the algorithm is going to pick it up. Another factor would be if you are a Prime member or not, as you would then be giving them another $80/year, their shipping is incredibly efficient so the prime membership may be profitable for them versus the costs they incur for providing free shipping. This is all just speculation and anecdote btw.

        • Exactly! My friend's account was banned and all he did was return his last few purchases which apparently were cheap chinese stuff like FM transmitter which did not work as advertised.

      • Yes amazon customer service is exceptional.

    • +2

While I do agree that Samsung's customer support leaves much to be desired, my experience with support for my Fold3 has been great.

The screen guard for my inner screen started peeling off at the crease and after a couple of weeks of using the device like that, there was suddenly a thick black line on the inner screen at the crease and the right half of the inner screen stopped working. This was after 15 months of purchase. I went directly to Samsung's official repairer iCure in Sydney, they completely replaced the inner screen in 3 days for free.

    • I bought Samsung Care to avoid arguing with them about this

    • I miss the time when I can just throw my Nokia 1110 around.

    • That's nuts.
In Perth, I've had nothing but good experiences with repair issues.

I've had a Fold2 and Fold3 and I've gone directly to the accredited repairers (Tecworks) with a screen protector issue (Fold2 and Fold3) and then the touch responsiveness died on the outer screen and I went to Samsung directly for that repair (who just send it to Tecworks) and it was all covered under warranty - no issues, no push back at all.

I even damaged my inner screen by dropping something on it, and that was replaced when they did the outer screen repair.

My partner scratched her Flip3 inner screen and months later, the screen protector was peeling and they fully replaced the inner screen and protector for her under warranty.

      • Tecworks are who it is with currently. Have asked them to escalate.

    • Edit: After escalating to Samsung they have decided to replace "as a gesture of good will".

  • I'm wondering if this folding phone thing will actually take off or is it just a phase?

    • +6

i think in a few more iterations it'll take off and drops in cost

      • +5

I bet it will disappear same as the 3D TV, just a gimmick, and it's too bulky when folded.

        • +14

Just because YOU don't like it doesn't make it a gimmick. 3D TV was inconvenient to use and lack any content.

Folding form factor is here to stay and you can't stop it. I bet you also thought curved screen will go away and 3.5mm jack is making a comeback.

          • +2

@dotJaz: Too many compromises for me, you are paying super high end prices for these and yet you get base model galaxy s23 cameras.

The rumours point to the pixel fold using a lower end camera than the pixel 7 too.

For these prices it should be the flagship spec camera hardware.

        • +2

Atm its too bulky and too fragile main reasons why i haven't got one, but how is this a gimmick when you have a tablet in your pocket? You get maximum productivity with you all the time.

        • +2

Probably never used a fold before but definitely not a gimmick. Its like having a Ipad mini in the back of your pocket. Since I had my fold I have since sold my tablets. This phone replaces them all. Definitely give it a go if you have the chance

          • @Bargain4Days: I have the fold 3, I love the concept but I still prefer the iOS software, it’s so much more fluid, little details matter in (better) app optimisation. If Apple did one of these I wouldn’t think twice and wouldn’t care if they cracked inside as their customer service is way more reliable I don’t get why they don’t do it. It would be iOS / iPadOS in one device 💡💸

            • @Alp3r: You just answered your own question

              • @B Wat: ..Because they CRACK? 🤣 apple wouldn’t want to deal with it because Samsung doesn’t either! The folds don’t sound promising apple says ‘not worth the risk of our customer service applecare+ reputation’ 💀

                • @Alp3r: Nah because Tim Apple doesn’t want to make an iPhone/iPad all in one device. He wants you to buy both.

        • How's it too bulky? I've got the ZFold2 and it's fine.

          • @Chmmr: Once the cost comes down and the fold becomes thinner I reckon it will take off. People may use a single device for entertainment and maybe even for 'work'.

      • Lol we are coming to 5th generation already and I always hear the same thing. "A few more iterations"

    • +7

I think it's a niche for some and gimmick for others. I travel a lot for work and most what I need to do between work can be done on a tablet instead of a laptop and a regular phone is too tedious. Also way easier to read on these. Been eyeing the next gen for the tear-drop hinge though.

      • +1

Yep, it's just not mature enough to go mainstream, yet.

    • Galaxy Fold may possibly go away or at least this form factor, everyone is still looking for the ideal size.

Flip on the other hand. Samsung's found a winner there. There are loads of people (mainly girls) with flips now and I can see why as its both functional and somewhat of a fashion piece.

      • Fold is staying. VIVO, OPPO, Xiaomi already have their fold variants. Google and rumour Apple is doing fold too.

    • +1

It will take off if Apple releases a folding phone.

      • All of a sudden foldables well be the ultimate want (using Samsung screens)

    • Definitely not a phase. I'll tell you the same thing I tell everyone else…

It's a matter of finding where the device fits in your usage. Me personally, I have a [Laptop] [iPad] and [Phone]. Each of them are used for different purposes, and I use all of them quite a lot.

With a Fold 4 however, every person I've come across tends to use this "phone" for similar purposes to what I use my [iPad] for. They enjoy the ability to carry a large screen with them at all times, and often tend to use their phone quite a lot during the day. These people don't see the limitations of having to unfold the device everytime they want to use the big screen, and they definitely don't find the phone too chunky too, as an iPad would take up significantly more space if they had to carry one around.

The Flip 4 on the other hand is always owned by people who find today's phones too big. The phone is looked at as a "cute" choice, and they love how little the Flip is

Samsung website got the same price with $350 trade-in bonus might be another option.

Tempted to get from Amazon. As mentioned refunds/returns with Amazon have been painless over the years. Not sure on phones though.

      • +1

Yep def from Amazon, no questions asked return. A few months back I wanted to return an unopened Samsung monitor because I only ended up keeping one and the return process was painful. They said initially they'd contact me for return, which they didn't, and 2 months later I get their email for the return label and constant harrasment from the pickup company for scheduling pickup. Meanwhile amazon within 30 days just initiate return, book a pickup, NO QUESTIONS ASKED!

        • +1

After 30 days is where questions are asked.

  • -2

A number of others with better folding mechanisms (fully flat) out there, or coming.

  • +1

What happens if you fold these back and forth really fast?

    • +11

the screen shatters and the battery combusts, sending millions of inflamed pieces of the phone into millions of directions, leaving the phone-bearer mortally wounded.

      • +11

would that be covered by the warranty?

        • +1

after a famous incident involving sammy and combustion batteries, who knows :)

        • Only through Amazon

    • +1

      It may start to fly?

  • +3

Any chance these can stack with other discounts on samsung website / epp / education?

  • +1

The crease on the phone will eventually get wider and crack will appear. I don’t think it’s worth it.

    • +8

Two years into using my Fold 2 and no such crack has appeared for me.

      • +1

Happened to my fold 3. There are many with similar experience.

        • -1

That's just the screen protector, not the screen.

      • +1

Also a Fold 2, no crack.

        • +1

Also a fold 2, no crack as well.
Bought at the start of 2021.

    • Fold 2 x 2, can confirm, no crack too.

  • +2

Hey OP. Add the store name in the title.

  • the fact that theyre at their 4th gen and it still has a gap when folded astounds me. im on the fold 2 and while this price is good, im going to wait for other manufacturer options.

good deal on the fold 4 though

  • Has anyone been using one of these since release with no issues/screen issues? Thinking of jumping from an iPhone 13 Pro Max but don’t want to have that constant fear of the screen breaking at the back of my mind. Seems like a good price.

    • You questions are mostly answered above already mate.

    • yes. no issues here.
wouldn't buy without warranty - it's new tech and peace of mind

    • Had the 4 since preorder and not a single issue

On my 3 had a couple issues. Had the bubbling internal screen protector issue and they replaced the protector under warranty. I also had the hinge stop opening all the way on my 3 (because I spend a lot of time in dusty environments probably) and they replaced 2/3 of the phone under warranty - everything except the back panel with battery and motherboard was replaced

Didnt need to use Samsung care for any of this

Maybe we just have a good authorised warranty partner on the Gold Coast (Tecworks). They did it all there.

  • +3

Fold 3 and 4 user here. Had both phones since pre order, no issues whatsoever with the hinges and screen. Work in a tunnel so exposure to humidty and dust is probably more so than the average user, never had any problems whatsoever. Makes me wonder if the people who use them are careless or Samsung has bad QC.

Definitely cannot go back to a non fold phone. Watching movies/ youtube and reading manga is an absolute game changer, amazing experience.

  • Fold 5 will have Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, like in the s23 series

    • I saw it have 2 folds in one of the models, so it will be larger than 7in tablet.

    • and the fold 6 will have the sd 8 gen 3

  • +5

Great price, but agree with most of the comments about the Fold not being mature enough yet. Had a Fold 3 for just over a year and recently traded it in for a S23 Ultra. I didn't have any technical issues with the Fold - only annoying thing was the internal screen protector bubbling in the middle - but I found using the phone to be quite awkward. Constantly cleaning grit and dust out of the screen gap and hinges - and don't even think about bringing it to the beach. The screen was too small when folded to be of much use, which meant that in order to do most things you had to open it up all the way. That's fine if you're sitting down, but terrible for on the go phone checking. The cameras were pretty average. Watching videos was not massively different as the form factor made most videos appear with big black lines above and below - so not much more screen area used than a standard slab phone. It was amazing as a productivity device, but difficult as a daily driver. If they fix the tiny front screen, dust collecting hinge and fold gap at some point, I might go back.

    • What about taking notes and annotating photos and browsing the web?

  • Damn upgraded from fold3 to s23 ultra a month ago… would have preferred to have another note.

    • You have one now

  • -1

For the original price of 2600, I can buy a iphone 14 pro and and ipad pro.

    • +4

      Good on you

    • +2

      Yeah but iOS….no thanks.

      • +1

iOS integration is way better than android and I use both and I notice every little difference. Plus apple gets app updates earlier than play store that was a big red flag for me. I noticed how much android has become “Jailed” over the years following apples path by also physically removing microsd, aux & non removable battery.. there’s not much privilege and freedom like it used to have. So apple wins because it always stayed true to its essence-self while Samsung obsesses rent free on apples mind by mocking them like a child with their commercials.

        • What a load of rubbish, apple is way more locked down than android.
I dont know if it is the same now but to transfer music instead of drag and drop like android you had to do a sync through itunes.
Integration may be better with devices as you are locked into their ecosystem but I would rather have a choice.
Then there is the slow adaptation of su h as NFC.

  • Waiting on the iPhone Fold, and the only reason for that is because my damn work website doesn't work on Android. When you hit the return button, it goes to the next field, unlike a desktop or iPhone which actually does a return key and reloads the page!

    • +2

Surely Chrome ios and andriod works the same as the browser is independent of the system os
