no SSD… so Win 11 key in the BIOS ?

    • +2

That’s long been the case with these machines.

  • +2

    No RAM No SSD

    What happened to it?

      “Sold separately.”

  • Does anyone know if it takes SO-DIMMs and NVME?

  • +5

    A refurb with parts removed?

    • +4

I never had any idea why they are allowed to call it refurb. Just call it second hand, we all know that…

      • +4

Yeah this one makes no sense.

Refurbished to what? Not OEM, its missing parts. The hell?

        • Utopia showing how evil it can be?

      • -3

Refurb means warranty, used means none in 99% of cases.

        • 3 month warranty? Lol

          • +3

@clandestino: 3 months is plenty of time to sort out any hardware issues that might arise. If a part fails one week in for a used unit you're stuffed.

            • @JerraJones: Just because somebody offers a 3 month warranty on an item, that doesn't mean it should be misleadingly sold to others.

People will be buying these items with the belief that these items have been refurbished. When in reality, they are second hand and have not actually been refurbished. In fact, components have been removed!!!!

        • So … dealer second hand cars should be called refurbished cars. Come on.

        • Refurb means warranty

          What, no it doesn't

      • "Allowed"? Oh, sweet summer child. Very few words are protected.
A townhouse is a 5-story city home for aristocracy with servants quarters. A "Villa" is a country mansion for the elite. But to an Australian real-estate agent …

Like those "refurbished" originally had a real meaning. Battery and external shell was replaced to make it like new, with a full manufacturers warranty. Now, well salesmen just lie. And they think they are honest because "everyone else is doing it".

        • +1

Because no one goes against them and you are discouraging people doing it. In here it’s a simpler community and we have monitors I don’t see it is difficult to force the ads/deals to have accurate descriptions. Thinking about how often you see people shouting “price in title!” etc to correct the deal titles and descriptions.

Simply change to “dealer second” will be good enough to distinguish from real refurbs.

    • They swapped the drive and RAM for a USB WiFi Adaptor.

  • Anyone know if it has room for a 3.5” drive?

    • +1

      Nope

      • Cheers

        • +1

          • @jv: Lol….made me chuckle 😹

    • -1

The whole thing is thinner than even a 2.5" drive.

      • +2

What kind of hefty chonk 2.5" drives are you thinking of?

      • +2

Think about what you just said. You can put a 2.5” drive inside this, yet you’re saying it’s thinner than a 2.5” drive. That’s not physically possible.

        • It's like a TARDIS.

    • You can get M2/nvme to SATA expansion cards. I'm running 3x 3.5in drives in a chassis external to a USFF (with their own power supply) for a compact Unraid setup

      • That would mean that you cannot close the case?

      • Hi mate, I am interested to setup a similar unraid nas. Can you suggest ot give me a link to your external chassis for driv3s with external power. Thanks in advance.

        • +1

          Icydock if you want fancy.
Mine is just a metal drive cage, with a fan and a buck convertor for the 5v power and a 12v/20a PSU plugged into the wall.
Case is closed, I just notched the front panel out with Dremel to feed the flat ribbon cable out for the M2 SATA board

  • +1

Can take 2x nvme and 1x 2.5 drive, possibly also a 2230 in modem slot.

Some of them have a 2.5 caddy/cage mind didn’t so I bought a ribbon adapter from eBay.

    • +1

Just a note that the EliteDesk 800 G4 Desktop Mini physically can't take 2 M.2 drives and 2.5" caddy due to a design flaw in the 2.5" caddy taking up space for the second M.2 so likely the 400 G4 DM has the same issue.

The caddy can be cut to get around this or you can just skip the caddy altogether like shadyscab has done :)

      • +1

Going by the photos in the hardware manual I found it looks like some of the models had an option for a dedicated GPU, potentially in lieu of a HDD - some of the instructions/images in the manual refer to removing a DGPU in the same location that others show a 2.5" drive. That 2.5" drive is located above the M.2 drives (which is why I was looking at them in the first place), so this clash you mention could be an issue on this model also…

The title of this deal should not include the word "refurb", it is quite misleading. The eBay category is "used". Maybe this deal should be reported for being misleading.

Per my earlier comment, people will be buying these PCs, in the belief that they have been refurbished. When in reality, they are second hand and in fact, have had components removed !!!!

  • I received mine, in very good condition, unfortunately the drive cage for the 2.5 was missing, I've asked them if they can ship that to be separately

    • Get any reply? Also missing the drive cage.

      • OK got nowhere with them… you can get the cable for <$10 on AliExpress and 3D print the missing drive cage.

        • What are the advantages of the drive cage vs gaffer tape?

          • @UncleRico: I guess the drive cage rules out any chances of it falling off and shorting something out. Didn't take long to print.

      • +3

No, I went there in person and they had a truckload of them but apparently they didn't come with the hdd cage from the seller.

I personally went through a stack of them that Pearl hadn't processed yet and can verify, not a single one included the 2.5" cage but a few of them had various other bits and pieces (GPUs, WiFi cards etc.)

Possibly the original seller / previous owners stripped out the hdd including cage and cables before they disposed of them for security reasons.

It sucks, and Pearl should have specifed if standard components were missing but I suppose it is what it is, it sounds like they pre-sold them before actually receiving the shipment so probably weren't aware at the time they advertised.

        • Yeah they replied that the particular SKU I have does not come with the cage, my one is an ex-schools device that originally had a 256gb NVVME in it so it's quite possible what they said is true.

Not really a problem, but I did mention it would be nice if they said upfront the drive cage and cables etc are not included as most SKU do have them even if shipped with an NVME.

        • I just received mine today in a good condition. But like yours, mine doesn't include that 2.5 SATA drive cage/tray at all. So I left a message about that not to mention asking them to send it over to me separately but no reply yet.

As their ad. does not mention this at all so I am kind feeling deceived.

By the way, if I cannot get the drive cage/tray from them, where can I get one? Are you gonna use yours without any 2.5 drive cage?

Honestly, I like this PC and would like to use it, though even without any 2.5 drive cage, though.

          • @aussiessam: Gaffer tape.

It’s like the Force in Star Wars.

Dark on one side, light on the other and is responsible for holding the universe together…

          • @aussiessam: You can buy the cage, cable and screws on eBay but not cheap… just getting the cable on its own though is <$10 delivered from AliExpress… I’ve 3D printed a drive cage in ABS.

            • @Pobman: Do you have a link to the cable set?

I don't know what I'll do with mine, sans storage drive.
Hopefully I can sort something out before the 1TB SSD I added reaches capacity.

And I suspect pearl will probably ship the drive cages and cables to anyone who asked for them the next shipment of HPs they get…

Looking at their inventory it seemed like they buy mostly ex government hardware, the federal government seem to like Dell, previously it was Lenovo and a lot of the state government seems to run HP.

It was obvious that they had previously processed all of these brands and broken down anything that wasn't B grade or better. And it's not like these drive cages or cables are the the type of thing that is subject to any sort of wear and tear, it's more likely whoever disposed of them found it easier to rip the drives out cage and all rather than spend the time taking the drives out properly. I'm sure the cage and cables would go through an industrial shredder just fine.

              • @ToobsAU: It has not arrived yet but I ordered this one:

                https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001182877064.html

There were cheaper options but this one slips in over the Free Fast Delivery threshold which drops the shipping time down a lot.

You can get the USB C, HDMI, Displayport and VGA port addon boards on Ali too for about $30 if you ever needed. Not sure the speed of that USB C addon port but might be an option for some external expansion. (Edit: They are USB-C 3.1 Gen2 if the blurb is to be believed.)

                • +1

@Pobman: Nice, to be honest i bought it on impulse because I could use the RAM and SSD I had laying around doing nothing after upgrading one of my desktops and then later thought on what I could do with it, I'll probably find some other use for it to justify my impulse buy before I receive an order from AliExpress 😂

                  • +1

@ToobsAU: Ditto :) it was in my basket from this sale so when it dropped to $178 on the next sale it just sort of ended up being bought :D Just using it as a 'project' box, its at least 10x smaller than my old one and more powerful.

My one came with Windows 10 Education license, but I installed Windows 11 Pro and it authenticated automatically without the need to resort to massgravel. I was not sure if you could move from Education to Pro.
