16GB of memory on a “pro” device that can’t run native Docker in 2023.
Pretty obvious why Linux surpassed macOS on Stack Overflow’s latest survey.
Such a shame, because Apple Silicon is amazing. If only they ran the Linux kernel and could use Docker without a VM.
Even if you run Linux on it, you lose the benefits of the NPU and GPU :(.
I’ve been waiting for Asahi Linux to support all features. Apple Silicon + Linux = Match made in heaven
…aaaaaand if you have no intention of running Docker ever, cause you're not a software developer?
Only software developers are pro.
Right, so people who edit video and make music don't count.
16gb is normal on many pc based devices too, especially when it's not desktop form factor (while this is "desktop", the form factor is more laptop alike).
Not defending it, but it's not as bad as it sounds. These would make perfect automation style machines.
But it isn’t being marketed as a “normal” computer. It’s being marketed as a “pro” device.
16gb is fine for general use (for now).
perfect automation style machines
Who wouldn’t be using Docker for such use case in 2023?
The "Pro" is just the cpu type. It's like PC's with "Xtreme" monikers.
A pro in the mac line for this would be the studio pro (max), not these. The "m2" is used in the air lines, and funnily enough is still more powerful than almost any desktop based Intel cpu. Not really relevant for this discussion though.
I don't get why you can't run docker on it, it works fine. If they are talking about Rosetta…. There are plenty of things that need it? It's a deeper discussion on arm v x86, and I wouldn't call it a negative point.
I don't get why you can't run docker on it, it works fine.
No, it doesn’t. It must be run in a VM which causes performance issues, consumes more system resources, slow file IO access and an extra layer of networking.
You probably don’t notice it’s running in a VM because Docker do their best to make it look and feel like it’s running natively.
8GB is fine for general use.
even as a developer / programmer, really depends on which software or tech stack you are using
have been using M1 and M2 machine (M1 Mac Mini, M1 Max Studio, M1 Max Macbook Pro, M2 Pro Mac Mini) since release
mainly used for development in iOS (swift), Android (java), .Net (Xamarin), Node JS and React front endLove these machines and no issue about docker (I do have another windows laptop running docker desktop though)
Way better than those Intel chip macs especially the fan no longer be so noisy anymore16gb on this is equivalent to 32gb on most windows machines. And is more than enough for fast 4k video editing ECT which is what most people use these for .
There's a lot to unpack in some of these comments as there is quite a bit of misunderstanding.
The 16GB isn't equivalent to 32GB. RAM capacity is RAM capacity. What these have is lower latency/increased throughput.
The other comment by someone re it being better than any Intel desktop CPU is also erroneous. One is x86, the other is ARM. ARM is a much for efficient instruction set and they aren't comparable. You can try but they're different beasts. ARM is about efficiency and hence is what is in mobile devices, it's very specific and less 'general' than x86.
None of that means the M1/M2 aren't great. They're amazing. Happily have owned a M1 Pro and currently own an M2 Pro device. Love them to bits. They're far less general purpose than x86 unfortunately but with most generic stuff like web browsing etc they're brilliant.
You could probably price match this at OW and pay $1771.75 which is a few dollars cheaper than the AOC pricing.
if you could get discounted Apple giftcards (or getting equivalent value in everyday rewards / flybuys) then AOC store might still provide better value
the 15% off apple giftcard last month was an insane deal
Seems expensive for what you get?
I think if you pay more than $1000 for a Mac mini you should be using it as part of your job.
(I mean more than checking work emails).
So it's not great for porn?
It is - with the M2 chip, you'll reach a happy ending faster.
Only if you are working in the porn industry and getting paid.
But if you look like your avatar, then I suspect you won't get employed haha.@edfoo: Why? Don't you know the male audience of porn - they like to see pretty girls with ordinary middle age men who they can relate to. Only the female audience goes for studs.
Also, you obviously don't know Mr. Garrison's type.
@CptnObvious: I know he doesn't do drugs.
It probably is, but they are just great reliable little machines. I buy them for my business, and they are great. I can install a Mac mini with a bit of extra ram than is strictly necessary, and know that my non-tech literate staff will be able to just use them for 5-10 years and I won't have to do basically any upkeep or maintenance to keep them going, they are fast, and just super reliable now that they have gone to solid state storage. The only thing that fails is keyboards, mice and monitors every 3-4 years, which are a 5min downtime swap out.
I have to say that I would love them to ditch the fan (like the MacBook airs) as the last moving part that can fail/get filled with dust.
You find the computer illiterate people can use these?
I bought one years ago for my dad for his retirement gift - and a week later he was out trying to buy a Windows PC because Mac was too weird. bloody ungrateful lol
haha that is a bummer. I find if someone was using Windows, to come to Mac would be a big culture shift for them.
A chromebook for example is a pretty easy to use system, and hella reliable - I have a laptop that's 7 years old now and is still working great, with no maintenance from me. But I'm under no illusion that if you are in a workplace that requires some clunky windows x86 apps, that will never be a solution.
though a business would just go Intel NUC with no fan, Windows 11 and Microsoft365 ???? and you will get 5-10 years on NUC and Windows 11 ….. and MS takes care of patching Win11 and Microsoft365 updates to Outlook, Works, Excel, etc …..
Good deal if your are doing video editing, it can outperform a pc has 3070 but consumes much less power in term of image processing, even with 16G memory.
It is Not good for gaming or AI so far.I mean, the future is bright though?

That's a Resident Evil 4 benchmark at 1080p on a similar cpu, albeit more ram that it doesn't seem to use.Do you know how this Mac Mini fairs with Blender?
Do iMacs ever go on sale? Thinking of getting one for my old man because of the huge screen
JBs and Goodguys alternate having 10% off every month or so.
cost to make an M1 is probably same as an M2 based size of chip, etching, packageing etc …………. not sure why apple even makes M1 anymore, and then the price squeeze between an M1 and M2 chip ….. think I will wait until apple don't make M1 anymore and price drop M2 and have M3 ….. ideal of the ARM was cheaper to make vs buy Intel but savings don't seem to have flowed through to price drops …..
M1 is still plenty powerful and a great thing to get if you find them on sale
i have spotted two occasions where amazon was selling this model for $1795 or something. i would wait for another round if not urgently need one.
Price and store in the title?
