If you don't mind a larger tube and have a Coles near you, Coles is selling the 200g tube for $5, which works out to be cheaper per 100g than the one in this deal.

These use to have triclosan which has shown to keep bacteria from forming for up to 12 hours. Not so long ago, it seems they ditched this due to all the upheaval about this ingredient. On the Colgate site it shows just Sodium Fluoride 0.32% w/w as ingredient…Aldi sell the generic brand, but significantly cheaper. Any reason to buy Colgate over others, now that they've ditched triclosan?

    • Started to taste soapy to me when this change occurred. Not sure why.

Studies show that stannous fluoride, which is present in Oral B toothpastes and some Colgate toothpastes (not sure about other brands), has improved antibacterial and anti-decay properties compared to sodium fluoride. Although, any toothpaste with a recommended 1000 to 1500 ppm fluoride (the one on this post has 1450 ppm) should be sufficient as long as you brush your teeth properly twice a day and hopefully floss every night.

I personally would just buy the cheapest toothpaste that meets the fluoride content requirement, and pick stannous fluoride over sodium fluoride if the price difference isn't that big. Also, I wouldn't bother with any of the whitening toothpastes because they usually contain stuff that erodes your teeth to get that whitening effect. Ultimately, with proper oral hygiene (brushing twice a day + daily flossing + tongue scraping), it's reducing sugar in your diet that will have the greatest effect on your oral health.

      • Thank you! Can you say more about tongue scraping? Is it possible with an electric toothbrush?

        • No problem :)

Basically, a whole lot of bacteria and gunk accumulates on your tongue and can be one of the major causes of bad breath. I usually scrape my tongue after brushing every morning and night and I’ll be able to see a yellowish layer come off.

I’ve been using my toothbrush to brush my tongue whenever I travel and don’t have a tongue scraper with me. Although I feel like it’s not as effective as a scraper. It’s like brushing a dirty carpet. It’s better than nothing but scraping would remove a lot more junk.

I personally use a cheap plastic scraper that looks like a plastic version of a disposable wooden coffee stirrer. I wouldn’t fret too much on what kind of scraper to get as long as it gets the stuff off your tongue.
