I came across this deal on the BenQ GV30 Portable Smart Projector and thought I'd share. It's priced at $785.96, which might seem a bit high for a 720p projector with 300 ANSI Lumens, but its portability and extra features could make it worth considering for some people. Here's what I found interesting about it:

  • Portability
  • Unique Design: I like its design and looks like it allows for quick and easy mounting in various places
  • Android TV
  • Bluetooth Speaker Function: Looks like it can also be used as a Bluetooth speaker as well

I'm actually still on the fence, but I thought I'd share this for anyone who's in the market for a portable projector.

  • $800 and not even 1080p.

      Yeah. No.

Plenty of amazing < $200 1080p portable projectors available. Look at Blitzwolf for some examples.

      • For me, the main selling point is projecting on the ceiling. The only other option I could find was Samsung Freestyle which is more expensive. Do you know any cheaper alternatives?

        • Well he just gave you an example? Simple google shows up one for under 1/3 the price.

          • @scuderiarmani: Which example? I can't find anything with easy ceiling projection. Can you give me a link?

            • @FreeFrag: Maybe you shouldn't be looking for a projector with an option to throw straight up at the ceiling but for a mount or a small tripod that's going to allow for that. It won't look as good as the one in the deal, but damn it feels expensive.

@pizzaguy: I already have a WiMiUS K2 that I use with a tripod for ceiling mounting. I got it 4 months ago and have been using it almost every day. Right now I'm looking for a less clunky solution. I agree that it feels overpriced but I considering how much I use it, I think I can justify it ;)

        • just use a $20 camera tripod?

          • +1

@GregFiona: I've been doing that every day for the last 4 months! Now I want to upgrade to something nicer.

@FreeFrag: I see, I went for the nicer picture (1080p) instead of the nicer looks 😇

you really need to narrow down your needs. This projector is mainly for portability so carries a premium price due to that. While the other commenters aren't wrong where you can get cheaper projectors, they are giving examples of a entirely different product category. If you are using a projector for home, then it's a waste of money getting this as stated by the other commentators.

The main benefit of this projector is, the better inbuilt audio, the inbuilt battery and proper reviews showing it's picture quality and brightness. The projectors that others are giving examples don't fall into the same category. They might have inferior built in audio, no built in battery and no proper reviews, as we all know you can't trust the advertised specs. Brightness numbers supplied mean nothing when the ads for the cheap ones don't advertise ANSI lumens. If you are using it at night then the fact that the cheap ones don't advertise the correct numbers don't mean anything. Regardless, I would want a review of the picture quality and to see a image comparison rather than relying on 1080p is better than 720p. A 720p projector can have better picture quality than 1080p, if you consider colours e.t.c. I would not compare this to the cheap projectors, however I would not recommend paying extra for this if you are just using at home. You can get for the same price a standard shaped normal projector with worse audio and no inbuilt battery that does way better picture quality. But even then it is a different product category, and shouldn't be compared.

So far I have mentioned 3 different product categories. Cheap projectors with no reviews and fake specs. Portable projector from reputable brand which has been reviewed thoroughly, this Benq. Projector from reputable brand with picture quality that reflects it's price. None of the projectors within each product category should be compared with another product category. Having said all this, you can also look into the xgimi brand or nebula brand. E.g. Xgimi halo or mogopro and the + models. However even then they don't compare to this projector which is unique with the spinning base. Not to mention Benq support in australia will be much better. The Xgimi horizon with no battery is something else to look into, however it's a different product category.

Is this BlitzWolf® BW-V5 LED "physical 1080p" considered amazing? Interestingly, it's "4K" on the European market.

I once got a $200 HD projector and hated it all the way as it was dark and too much of the picture was out of focus despite adjusting. I returned it.

I thought that was a portable heater fan.

    • +2

i thought that was oversized tape measurement

    • +3

I thought it was a new hoselink deal

      • I had to triple-check why a hoselink would cost $800

    • Thought it was a bluetooth speaker then saw the price.

      • It is also a Bluetooth speaker but you obviously don't want to spend that much money for a Bluetooth speaker. More of a party trick than an actual feature

  • Not even remotely a deal for this. 1080p projectors are dirt cheap.

Note that Benq "Smart" projectors can't use the Netflix app. Most other streaming services work fine though.

Thanks. Didn't know that. Looks like you can install it though just not officially. There are lots of guides like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/projectors/comments/qi76z2/benq_gv3…

Annoyingly, you get stuck with an old mobile version of the Netflix app, and not a native android tv one so usability suffers. It's a shame they haven't gotten their act together for years now.

        • If I use Netflix on my phone, can I cast it on the projector?

          • +1

            @FreeFrag: Nope. it's blocked :(
You can screenshare, but that's generally laggy compared to normal casting.

            • @nugstar: Oh, that could be a deal breaker then. Thanks for the heads up.

              • @FreeFrag: If I'm not mistaken, you could fit an amazon fire tv or potentially a google chromecast inside it. Since it's 720p, a lite version of them would be enough.

                • @Man10United: It has a HDMI, you can surely-not-just-potentially fit a whole desktop computer. Not inside it, but yeah, HDMI!

                  • @pizzaguy: I vaguely remembered a video I watched a couple of months ago and thought fire tv could somehow go inside it. Well I looked at its photos and yeah firetv goes at its back but there's no cover. They even put a usb connector there for power.

  • The below remarks are straight off Benq website……
'If you'd like to watch movies using a projector on a 100”~120” screen without ambient lighting, around 1500~2000 lumens of projection brightness is ideal. If you need to turn on ambient lighting or if there are bright light sources in the room, a projector with 3,000 lumens or more will display clear images'
What about Brightness for Outdoors Projectors?
'Good outdoor projectors like the BenQ GS50 deliver 500 lumens, which looks great in low light conditions and even reasonably well in well-lit indoor (also depends on image size). For outdoors usage, make sure you get a portable projector with those 500 lumens at least. Cheap portables may offer 200-300 lumens, but that won't do even at night. Sure, portable projectors aren't designed for grand cinematic experiences, so they don't need thousands of lumens, but we'd put the entry point at 500'
