  • PoE :?

    • Try TEG1105PD? Support PoE passthrough with reasonable price.

      • +1

PoE passthrough is not PoE. It requires an external device/injector to send POE in one port that gets split out the others.

  • +1

No, not on this model. I have the 2 of the 8 port TL-SG1008P, which has 4 PoE ports. The one in the post is good value if you don’t need a PoE switch, but personally I don’t like the plastic case.

Got one of these taped under the desk. Good enough.

Also modded to use micro USB to power. Very easy mod as it's powered by a teeny-tiny 5V adapter anyway. They should have made it USB-powered in the first place.

You got interested, so something like this?

CY USB 2.0 Male to 3.5mm 1.35mm DC Power Plug Barrel 5v Right Angled 90 Degree Cable 100cm https://amzn.asia/d/b8OXbjx

      • +5

The cable is almost the same price as the switch LOL

I spent 50c on that micro USB breakout board then cracked open the screw-less case to mod. Only basic and crude soldering skills are required. Should be very easy.

Thanks mate, I find something similar in aliexpress only cost like $3, I think I will go for those

  • Any cat 5/6 recommendations

    • Anything that seems legit and not dodgy Amazon stores with jumbled letters for names.

There's not much to Ethernet cabling.

      • There's not much to Ethernet cabling.

For this switch? Sure. But long runs, POE(+ & ++), 2.5gb+ the standards and specs come into play, including the quality.

        • +1

In the context of a thread based around a $15 TP Link switch, I severely doubt any of those considerations are relevant.

The various categories of ethernet cabling have their own specs, the cable either meets those specs or it doesn't. Which is why you don't buy from randomly generated Amazon storefronts.

    • Only the best $500 Denon ethernet cable for you - such a shame it's out of stock…

      • Wow it runs so fast it can time travel

        • News to me.

  • +2

This is all great for when I was 22 -> 30 but man I wish some kind of a nice 16 port PoE edition would come down, or heck 24 / 48 port if I ever get a house.

  • Got one of these last month at this price and stayed under my desk since

    • +3

Are you that scared of it?

      • +1

        haha

  • Good deal for this cat 7 flat 5M for $7.49

That's a great example of what I mentioned above - Amazon store from a dodgy Chinese vendor presenting a storefront with a weird name.

That's clearly not Cat 7 cable. They just use that number because it's higher than 6. Real Cat 7 cable uses a non-standard connector and not an RJ45.

The cable will 'work', it's probably just cheaply produced cat 6 of some sort. If you want to trust what you're getting, it's best to avoid stuff like this.

      • Weird. It is recommended by Amazon. Their store seems ok from the reviews and it is located in SA since 2020. They claim made from 100% copper and 10 Gb/s.

I haven't bought yet now I am in doubt

        • Amazon reviews, take with massive grain of salt.

The name is classic Chinese pretending otherwise.

It's almost certainly flat Cat 6-something, it clearly isn't Cat7 because that needs a different connector.

It'll work, but it's certainly not what it's claiming to be. But why reward sellers who need to resort to fudging specs on the product.

          • @rumblytangara: Ok I may have to rethink this. Thanks for sharing

            • @bcYield: Again, that cable is going to be fiiiine. Well, as long as you're not using it as PoE line with a high wattage device.

It just isn't Cat 7, and it's shifty that the seller is claiming it as such.

It will be fine for 99% of the people looking for a cable.

              • @rumblytangara: alright, so looks like it is ok for a network cable than a power cable. I will grab one as a spare. shouldn't be wrong with this price anyway. Thanks for the addition

      • From what I know cat 7 wasn't standardised to begin with and most of the time it's just marketing bs/performs similar to cat 6..sometimes worse because it's not an officially recognised standard and people are more likely to sell dodgy cables (For example, not having enough twists in internal cables..particularly cheap flat ones, causing issues with interference for long cable runs)

  • +1

What are you talking about? Of course a Cat 7 cable can be terminated with a RJ45 connector. The standard refers to the quality / performance parameters of the cable itself.

  • Link is taking me to a 10/100 (not gigabit) model??? (no G at the end of the model name)
I wonder how many will be bait and switched. Tempted to neg the deal but probably not OP's fault.

    • Looks like the original posted item is sold out.

      • I'm not sure who's responsible here but putting an inferior product that isn't fit for the original purpose at the same URL is very shady.

  • Hey guys, what exactly is this used for? It's not a router is it? Switch being it repeats signals?? Like one ethernet port now can connect 4 more devices?

    • Yes that's what it is.

Think of it as a powerbar for ethernet.
