This appears to be the same rice cooker as I bought - It rocks. Produces great rice every time and is very easy to clean.

    This is a strange coincidence:

About 15 minutes ago my girlfriend rang and we had the following conversation:

Her: "Oh my god I think I've ruined the rice cooker!!"

    "Why,what happened?"

"Well, I didn't realise you are supposed to use a bowl and put the rice straight into the machine and it started burning…"

She is not very kitchen-literate at the best of times…

So this will be a good replacement.

      replacing the girlfriend?

      What a tool.

With those culinary skills, make sure she stays your girlfriend and doesn't become your wife ;)

    • anyone know what the $9 rice cooker is like?

      • +1

i think both are probably the same quality as you would expect.

Just bought the GVA one a couple of days ago, very happy with it.
They also told me that they have something running where if you buy $70+ of small kitchen appliances you can get it free, so if you need anything else, can save $9 lol.

    • +14

In that case, it's obvious that you really don't have enough experience to comment.

Trust me, coming from korean background who eats rice at least 2/3 times a day, You do not want to use microwave oven to replace any sort of rice cooking. Just the way microwave works by heating water instantly simply isn't suitable for rice cooking.

Saying that, if you cook rice very frequently, you should probably invest in something better with timer. (EDIT: Corrected as other available cheap rice cookers are available at lower price)

        • If you want to use a microwave rice cooker then IME you really need to soak the rice for at least 30-60mins first to get the best result…otherwise for the reasons koreainhyuk outlines the steaming effect will not be sufficient.

It still will not be as good as using stovetop/rice cooker methods, but it will be passable! ;)

can't go past a Tiger rice cooker.

but for the price this one is good.

Spend $70+ at the good guys on small appliances, and get a free rice cooker..

  • +2

    Is this the one?
Not many good reviews on it

      Who cares?

      1) It cooks rice
      2) It's only 9 bucks

      • rice taste better with teflon flakes?

    • +1

Bubbling and flaking teflon sounds pretty bad :S

Teflon material itself (PTFE) isn't carcinogenic but other material like PFOA is carcinogenic which may or may not be present depending on the manufacturer.

To be fair I don't think the 1.8L is the same as the 1L on sale now. My brother loves rice and cooks it daily and bought this 1L version last year from Aldi, and has not had a single problem with it.

About a month ago he upgraded to a 10 cup version from somewhere else, and it broke within a month, so is now back to using the Aldi one.

The Good Guys have GVA Rice Cookers for only $9 and have for months on end.

My local good guys has a whole pallet of them.

I'd prefer a good guys warranty over aldi.

  • this exact rice cooker is $9.00 @ joyce mayne

To make good use of these cheap rice cookers, you can actually cook Chinese hot pot in a rice cooker.

Great idea, but I wouldn't want to sit in front of the lid :(

Have also done risotto. Just add chicken stock. No stirring required. It's lazy and not authentic but hey, it works.

  • excellent!

My saucepan makes great Rice everytime who needs a Rice cooker?

    • +3

A Rice cooker makes great rice everytime without supervision or ever accidentally messing it up.
It's like asking who needs a slow cooker because you can make everything it can with stove/oven.

    • +1

I used to think that too, but then I tried a rice cooker…the big advantage - set'n'forget bro, walk away & come back to perfectly cooked, steaming hot rice!

Try forgetting your saucepan on the stove for half an hour or longer…

    • I have both a rice cooker and a saucepan. When I make rice for myself and I won't forget to check it, as pointed out by the last two posts, I use the saucepan. The rice cooker is a medium size one and would involve more washing up so I use that for more servings. So both have their uses.

  • bought this a while back. didn't switch to 'warm'. burnt rice and i suppose would have eventually caught fire.
wasn't surprised as every electrical item i've bought from aldi has met an untimely death.

This is a great price for a rice cooker. And if you have leftovers, remember that today's white rice is tomorrow's fried rice. Good deal OP! Thanks for sharing it.

    • +1

todays white rice is tomorrow's white rice in the fridge for me. Next weeks rice is where you have a problem

i have been using a $10 rice cooker for around 2 years with no issues. Brown rice comes out perfectly. Never used more than 3 cups of rice, that's a lot of rice.

  • +3

To all skeptics, doubting thomases and knockers, just invest $9 and TRY THE DAMM THING!! I bought a cheap rice cooker (looks exactly the same)a few years ago and I've been enjoying perfect rice and no mess ever since. Lay down misere at $9…

    • Agreed. I have a very similar one, working great & going on 7yo now with no sign of giving up the ghost!

I also have a larger, more expensive model but don't tend to use it as much as ol' faithful! :)

  • Never would've thought there were actually people that didn't use rice cookers.

    Guess that's the ozbargain way.

    • no, it is not. its either overeducated or undereducated.

There is only 30 Good Guys stores in the whole of NSW. How many Aldi stores are in NSW? I think dozens more so you have a better chance at getting one closer to home if you buy it from Aldi.
99cents doesn't deserve a NEG if it costs you $10 fuel to get one from your closest Good Guys store, rather than walking around the corner to Aldi's ;-)

    • +1

Very true. I live much closer to GG than Aldi, and I didn't think of how many Aldi stores are available for people. I'll take my neg away.

  • I got one of these a couple of years ago and it hasn't missed a bit. Doesn't flake teflon as suggested above.

I pop in all the relevant ingredients ( rice, milk, water, brown sugar, vanilla essence and a bit of cinnamon) and leave it to do the job - makes great rice cream. Because of the milk it will tend to sputter a bit, so needs to be popped on a tray.

  • +3

great deal….. The way things are these days rice is more expensive than the cooker.
