    Microsoft Security Essentials - "the anti-annoying, anti-expensive, anti-virus program":

"Microsoft Security Essentials is free and we designed it to be simple to install and easy to use. It runs quietly and efficiently in the background so you don't have to worry about interruptions or making updates."

Yes, sorry alvian but I'm not aware of a single legitimate reason to buy any Norton product these days. There are better free alternatives and last time I used a Norton product it was an insane resource hog that constantly crashed and just generally made a nuisance of itself.

      • are you sure you're not getting confused with my father-in-law?

Recently had 5 trojans/malware on my PC not detected by Microsoft Security Essentials.

Have switched to Avast! Free which detected and cleaned them all.

I wouldn't put too much faith in Microsoft's free solution…

People seem to think that just because Microsoft can come up with good Office and OS software means they have good anti-malware.

That is sadly not the case. Microsoft does not have as much experience in producing anti-viruses as Symantec or Avast. MSE might be no-frills and lightweight, but that's only because the protection it offers is fairly meagre as well.

I'm all for free AV but the MS anti virus is just rubbish.

only decent AV is nod32, just sayin
