        • Wow that must have cost a pretty penny

        • how much did that cost!

          • +1

@TasJacks: Its an upcoming work trip, anything up to J is paid by work and the F difference is salary sacrificed.

        • +1

3,720 SCs … Mother of Mercy … AJ just spat out his morning coffee. Now is when one wishes excess SCs could rollover into your new QF year.

          Well played!

            • @AircraftFreight: Thanks. I need to start learning these things. Getting back to traveling.

        • DSC, 3720SCs/P1

          What does this mean?

          • +2

@Bedgrub: A double status credit promotion, meaning that you'll net double status credits on bookings.
3600 SCs is the requirement for Platinum One, therefore 3720 would push me beyond that requirement.

        • +1

          (profanity).

  • +2

Doesn’t sound cheap to me. I have booked that for less including hotel.

    • +15

We are in post covid times and lots of airlines have jacked up their prices. Just saying.

      • +1

I paid $450 return (yes, on Jetstar — Is Qantas 3x better than their own budget airline? No, it ain't).

      • +5

Yeah so don’t fly anywhere. They’re profiteering right now to make up for lost fortunes during covid. I say they can jam it. If not many people fly, they’ll start discounting again. Look at the recent Qantas announcement on returning back to profit. That Alan, who earns a shittonne was gloating on, only two years after axing all those baggage handlers and staff. Plus the pay disputes.

I ain’t flying with them or Jetstar any time soon, for the above reason plus their horrendous record lately in delays, cancellations and screwing people over.

    • In the current environment it's a good deal. Normal prices for full service nonstop right now are between $1600 - $2000. It's all relative!

      • I miss 2019 era when it's only ~$700-$1000 to Japan

    • I don't think you've flown internationally in a long time mate if you think this "doesn't sound that cheap"

      • I fly regularly to Europe, mate!

        • +1

          Where in Europe is Japan?

          • +6

@Broomstick: You said: “I don't think you've flown internationally in a long time mate if you think this "doesn't sound that cheap"

I am a frequent flyer to various international destinations. I have a pretty good idea what is a good price and what’s not…

By the way, Europe is internationally!

            • @Thrifty Dan: Some reaaaally fragile egos in this chat huh. Me thinks you all need an international holiday. Relax a bit. Put your feet up.

    • For a direct Qantas flight to Japan, this is cheap. They've been sitting around $1600 for months

  • Why is radelaide cheaper?

    • +1

Probably less airport taxes. Also it has a stop (its not direct).

      • Price in description currently $1 cheaper than the title range!

Respecting local culture and people comes with all global travel. Do everyone a favour and don't travel to Japan if masking is an issue for you.

        • +5

Masks in Japan are mainly out of consideration. Keeping your spit to yourself. Pretty simple.

          • -2

@WhyAmICommenting: … if one is afflicted by Turrets, and is compulsively spitting everywhere and anywhere, perhaps.

          • -3

@WhyAmICommenting: So the japanese people that wear masks can't control themselves and spit everywhere?? Didn't get that impression last time I was there.

        • +9

You gonna walk around with that attitude with 120M people mostly wearing masks? You would be embarrassing yourself and Australia. Grow up, no-one cares about your personal beliefs. When in Rome… you assimilate.

        • +6

There's no evidence for a lot of things but that doesn't mean we should not respect the culture, laws and norms of the places we go to. That's a very entitled and selfish attitude. Me me me I just want to do whatever I want

There is no evidence marijuana use is harmful but I don't light up a joint whenever I feel like one.

          • -1

@illusion99: Plenty of evidence that marijuana is harmful. Do you love being wrong?

Facts are facts and it doesn't matter if 99% of people believe something false is true, it is still false.

The condescending attitudes of people on here with their presumptions is just childish and sad.

            • @tmcn85:

Plenty of evidence that marijuana is harmful.

Smoking it, yes; ingesting it, no (not more than fructose in fruits, lectins in vegetables and legumes, and oxalates in greens).

I don't light up a joint whenever I feel like one.

Have a bicky then. And chill.

            • @tmcn85: Well stay at home in your little bubble then if masks offend you so much

            • @tmcn85: Reread the second sentence of your comment and tell me that's not both condescending and childish.

    • +12

I'm guessing you're the kind of person who has a cold/flu and gets on public transport and doesn't wear a mask.. despite everything we have learnt.

      • +3

Haven't we learnt that COVID is airborne and that masks did absolutely zilch to contain the spread?

    • +4

There's no laws but just good practice, particularly on Public transport and confined areas. You can find cheap and good masks easily in Japan and although I was in Japan in December, it was easy to follow due to cold.

With the main parts of covid over, I wouldn't be surprised if less people wear masks, particularly as summer approaches. I think when you are outside, it would be fine not to be masked now.

  • I'll also have to note, Canberra is also from $1158, Hobart and Launceston is $1157.

  • Does it include seat selection? Last time Qantas was charging seat selection separately.

    • If you're a QFF they don't charge except for the front larger leg room seats.

  • +2

If you book directly through Qantas and you have a Qantas frequent flyer number, you get free standard seat selection. Otherwise add $40

  • +4

Qantas has gone significantly downhill as of late. Good price in post covid times, but don't expect the same level of high quality plane, food or service as it was in the past.

  • +2

Does Qantas still serve light breakfasts on the overnight flights from Asia? One pastry and a tub of yoghurt is just not going to cut it after 8+ hours on the plane.

    • +1

They did say they're changing their dining https://www.qantasnewsroom.com.au/media-releases/qantas-inve…

It just says "New second meal dishes on long flights between Australia and Asia" - unsure if this affects breakfast.

    • -3

That's when you land and enjoy better food outside? LoL
Do you eat at Midnight at home and eat a warm meal at 8AM? Get a grip

  • +3

I just paid almost the same amount for 3 people, including seat reservations and one check-in luggage return (bc it's… Ja-pan, baby!). Yes, on Jetstar, but is Qantas 3x better than its own budget airline? No, it ain't. Profile name doesn't check out.

    • +2

Thanks for your feedback! I still think this is a good full-service deal in the current environment, especially for the nonstop routes. Could it be cheaper? Absolutely. But it is decent for right now.
I also sent out those Jetstar return for free deals a couple weeks ago when they came out.
Just giving the people options - some people only want to travel full service, nonstop, etc.

    • How much extra is checked baggage with Jetstar?

    • I absolutely think Qantas is 3x better than its own budget airline. Maybe you haven't had enough bad experiences, delays or last minute cancellations with Jetstar, it usually takes about 3 or 4 before you finally put your foot down and say never again.

      • -1

If you abandon an airline after only 4 bad experiences, delays and cancellations then there will be no airline left for you to fly with.

    • There are many factors. If you weigh up just the basics of the flights to be equal (so luggage and seats) your jetstar flight wouldve been at least 650-700 per person assuming you bought it during that return for free sale.

Next you factor in HND vs NRT. That alone is a minimum of $20 per person in travel costs alone let alone the time taken. Much more if you take NEX / Skyliner. Then with Jetstar if you found the return flight via gold coast you got a decent deal but if its via Cairns, you're not sleeping that night the times are horrible for that flight.

Realistically if you're travelling on a super budget then sure it may not be worth it. But if you're one to value time and sanity as well its likely a better deal on qantas and this is before you play the lottery of will your Jetstars 787s have any maintenance issues.

Ultimately they're both deals but for different types of travellers.

  • No deal for the school holidays in July….

JPY gone up so much it makes everything so expensice in Japan.

    • I'm not sure what you mean by this. We're down slightly from record peaks in the last 10 years. Overall we're still ahead of where AUD JPY was just over 12 months ago. Feb 2022 it was closer to 1:80 and that way throughout covid.

If going from 1:92 to 1:88 makes everything too expensive then I don't think you should be visiting Japan to begin with.

  • cost us a snip under $10k for 4 people return in April, couldn't find anything better on here - not from an airline I'd get on anyway.
JetRats are really bad at the moment, cancel flights to make money, would not touch with a pole.

  • -8

Why go to Japan when you can go to third world places for much cheaper?

Bali, Vietnam, Bangkok, easy to get Bintang, drugs, girls, anything you want even diseases you can take back to Australia and treat using taxpayer funds!

Oh and cheap tummy tucks too lol

    • Bc many of us here are grown-ups with kids?

Why do I imagine you to look unhygienic with a beer belly

    • +1

Why do you live in Australia when you can live in a 3rd world country?

    • Why go to a restaurant when you can just throw something in the microwave?
Why go to the park and fly a kite when you can just pop a pill?

  • Decided to play Casino. Bought Jetstar 2 adults 2 kids 25/13-02/01 to Tokyo for $4400.

  • Any flights to Japan coming up for mid December?

  • generally those are gonna be high. Peak season, etc
Jetstar is the cheapest for then at around $1100

  • Any idea how long the prices are sticking for? And extra baggage cost for return? JAL's two checked bags is hard to beat.

    • JAL atm is still hovering between 1600 and 2200 return. ANA's cheapest sale was about $1400.

So for a full service this is probably the lowest so far for direct. Singapore Airlines has gone as low was 950 return (obviously via changi).

  • +1

Sale ends April 4, and these include 1x23kg checked bag

    • We want to travel to Japan via Vietnam and do a stopover. Which airline will be good and what is price range for September school holidays? We have 10+ people traveling together.

  • Looks like this sale has ended - any sales for November!!?
