    Great price! As someone who’s looking to build a computer this year and seeing how ssd prices are dropping. Very tempted to pull the gun but might wait a few months

      I recently did a new build using this CPU from a previous deal in a NZXT H1 v2 case. Paired with a Z690i motherboard and DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory. Coming from a Intel NUC, It's been great so far.

      I suspect there may be a few Z690 DDR4 clearance deals in the future as some vendors start to discontinue their Z690 DDR4 lines. (I believe MSI have already started to pull out)

      Not that there's a whole lot of financial sense to go with a DDR4 board now, given how sharply DDR5 prices have dropped over the last 12 months. (Although the mobos are still a little up there)

      Edit: On the other hand, there is a repeat of those Ryzen bundles deals running at SE again until midnight, but this time with a slightly better freebie… (A WD SN770 500GB instead of a $30 Netflix gift card)

      Surely much much cheaper CPUs can transcode Plex and quicksync…?

      Edit: Plex website says the $160 i3-12100f with it's 13000 passmark score is fine for anything except HDR sources in 4k 50mbps transcoding down to 1080p 10mbps. Non-HDR 4k, and everything else, is fine.

      So the cheaper non-k version, or the much cheaper Ryzen 5600, are still overkill.

      Very roughly speaking, for a single full-transcode of a video, the following PassMark score requirements are a good guideline for the following average source file:

      4K HDR (50Mbps, 10-bit HEVC) file: 17000 PassMark score (being transcoded to 10Mbps 1080p)

      4K SDR (40Mbps, 8-bit HEVC) file: 12000 PassMark score (being transcoded to 10Mbps 1080p)

      1080p (10Mbps, H.264) file: 2000 PassMark score

      720p (4Mbps, H.264) file: 1500 PassMark score

      The CPU Benchmark website is a good resource to see what sort of PassMark score a particular processor received.

        The Intel F SKUs dont have an iGPU and thus dont have the hardware for QuickSync. Any F SKU will be hit hard during transcoding jobs and might slow down anything else running on the system. If the machine is just a dedicated Plex server and there's never too many simultaneous users, these might get the job done, but if you're wanting something that can handle transcoding and other tasks, the iGPU is a massive benefit.

        Though most current Intel desktop CPUs use the same UHD 730 iGPU and you'll probably get similar plex performance with a 11400 vs this 12600k or even a 13600

    It is worth noting the 13th Gen, offers some signficant improvements.

    It might well be worth paying the extra for the 13th gen CPU..

    Been on AMD since 2016, did consider going back to Intel but the power consumption bugs me.

    Intel need to do better to compete with power consumption and X3D technology.

      My real life experience with this CPU has actually been quite different to what internet comments have suggested. It's fast and relatively cool.

      Idle temps are ~31°C and after 20mins of gaming it's at ~47°C. Under load, CPU package power is at ~27W and ~2.5W at Idle. This is in a NZXT H1 v2 case using the bundled 140mm AIO cooler.

        Yeah I thought I was doing to be in for a sauna / high power bill when I bought the i5-13600K
        It's cool, quiet and overall a much better experience than what I upgraded from.
        I think it's overclockers writing the bad reviews for Intel CPUs.
