Intel NUC 'beast Canyon' Extreme i7 11th Gen $979 Delivered + Surcharge @ Computer Alliance

I've got this NUC and it's great for what it is. Sure a custom build may be cheaper. This is for the convenience and size. No fluffing around, just add RAM, SSD and optional GPU.

It's quite compact. I paid quite a bit more during the COVID lockdowns, but it was a WFH deduction as we didn't go into the office those years.

I been using it for over 12 months daily and it's been reliable.

The onboard GPU is limited - I suggest adding something decent in.

Only negative is the fans can be a bit noisy, even on the lowest setting they ramp up.

  • what is the max size of the GPU can put in?

      • Thanks for the link, but watching an entire video to find out a single line of information is a pretty terrible way to research 😁😁😁 Ain't nobody got time for dat.

      Discrete Graphics
"Support for the latest high-performance, dual-slot graphics cards up to 12-inches long delivers".

Presume you can turn off the gaudy skull on the front?

    • I'm all for LEDs but totally agree - not a fan imo

    • +2

Sure can. And adjust its colour scheme

    Nah.

I love the bonus "power cable" haha
Just wait until Apple get wind of this and start selling Macbooks without an adapter

    • +1

Intel don't ship many of their NUC with the power cable required, hence you often see bundles with the required C13 IEC cable.

You can tell when they come with the AU cable when they have a '4' in the end of the model name. (i.e. RNUC11BTMI70004)

They're way ahead… Apple used to include an actual power cord with their laptops…. now you have to pay $29 to get it - the "Power Adapter Extension Cable".

Oh I recall this don't worry! I remember saving up for my first Macbook Pro 17" in 2008 and it came in a nice box with remote, the "extension" cable and a normal adaptor :(

  • I’ve had a NUC for years. I’ve just retired mine the fan is too damn loud now. I can dismantle it, but there’s no way to get to the fan. I found the NUC very expensive, so I bought one from Minisforum. It’s a spec monster and performs great.

@ilikeit Which one did you purchase? I was looking at the new HX99G running AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX & 6600m RDNA2 GPU. Seems to get good reviews, only issue is currently unknown wait/shipping times from minisforum, from what I read.

      • You and me both. Have been hesitant about pulling the trigger on the HX99G. Looks and performs good, just read a lot of mixed experiences…particularly on reddit.

I s’pose you’re more likely to hear about the bad than the good, though

UM690. No issues so far. I got the bare bones model and did BYO RAM and SSD.

    • I've got a i5-8500 series NUC that I use for work purposes for past 3-4 years and not really had that many issues with it since it is on 24x7. However, I have put a couple of external fans cooling it most the time (since it is hidden away behind a screen and all) just to get the ventilation going.

IMHO these are poor value for money… There are Ryzen-based Mini PCs for less than this that perform on par or better than this system.

    • +1

Do they have discrete GPU slot though?

I have a RTX6700XT in mine and it's very sweet. I'm sure the Ryzen one you mention won't be near to being "on par". Am I missing something? You're aware we're not talking about the 10cm boxes here right? This is the Beast Canyon with dedicated full size GPU slot?
