For those that used to get the annual fee refunded after getting your points be aware that NAB have cracked down on this with new applications after Dec 2022

i looked at this recently and decide to go with the NAB Qantas Rewards Premium Card - 70,000 points for $150 annual fee

77% of the points for 50% of the fee

    https://www.nab.com.au/personal/credit-cards/qantas-rewards/…

    • +2

That looks like a great option for churners, not so good for long term keeping as the points earn rate seems inferior to Signature Card.

Even I might go for your recommendation as I am mostly looking for some quick points.

      • +4

yeah all i do is churn so not interested in paying $395 a year for earning a bit more in points

        • That 20k points is a one way flight to Bali

    • +5

Westpac - 70k points for $99 (or $49 if with Wespac already)

+$50 Annual Altitude Qantas program fee

      • yeah just did that 2 months ago

You can't get this deal again if you have held a similar card with them in the past 18 months - "This bonus Qantas Points offer is not available to existing customers who have received or are entitled to receive NAB Qantas Rewards bonus Points for a new personal NAB Qantas Rewards credit card in the 18 months prior to the opening of a NAB Qantas Rewards Signature Card, NAB Qantas Rewards Premium Card or NAB Qantas Rewards Card account."

    • Yep, NAB really cracking down on churners with this move & no longer doing pro rata refunds.

    • +1

      Thanks! I've nearly applied!

  • If I do get this 120k points plus whatever from spending using the card then what am I looking at in terms of flight booking benefits..

For eg: how many points would I need to get 1 international return flight?

    TIA

    • Honestly, Qantas makes it very hard to use points for flights. Using points in premium cabins is the best value, but business/first points seats are scarce.

      • Thx I don't mind taking a economy return on intl flights but is there any place where I can check all the ways I can redeem these points. I googled but not sure if Qantas FF and these are same way redeemable

      • You gotta be quick on it, first in best dressed. I haven't had any issues. Virgin generally has more availability but same principles apply.

      • Your not wrong, business and first class are pretty much impossible post covid unless you are gold/platinum

        • +1

          Lol what

        • +1

I don't know why you got so many -ve for this. It's the case. The only exceptions are last-minute flights.

    • +1

Given the rate at which QF are devaluing their points, by the time you earn the last 30k, probably worth a fair bit less than they are now

      • +1

It's nuts, isn't it? Bloody Qantas

      • +2

So my 965k points might barely get me to the end of the street soon enough….

        • At least your username will get you there fast enough.

  • +7

I was useless at using points until I started reading the various forums on how to get the most value out of them. Now I am booking classic reward flights 353 days out and getting plenty of availability in business, with occasional first class options. Platinum and Gold status will get you earlier access to seats than silver/bronze, so if you have a family member with higher status - have them book for you using the family points transfer system.

Classic reward seats pop up from time to time due to cancellations, too - so keep searching for availability on your preferred dates. I recently got a same day business class classic reward flight from Sydney to Tokyo and was in the air less than 9 hours later.

I grabbed one of these cards around two weeks back and found the process with NAB to be quite good. Had the card approved and provisioned in Apple/Google Pay in no time.

    • Can you recommend a good forum or summary for what you have learned?
      I suck at this.

      • +27

Sure! Disclaimer: I'm a bit of a points nerd, but don't know everything and there's plenty of people smarter than me around.

        Sites:
        https://www.pointhacks.com.au/
        https://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/
        https://thechampagnemile.com.au/

My ramblings, in no particular order (I really should write this up with some structure):

        • Aim to redeem points for Classic Reward flights only. Always consider the value-per-point for your redemption, which is greatest on business and first class flights. You may have a different view, but I won't redeem points for economy class flights. On occasion, I'll drop to premium economy when business/first isn't available, but I generally avoid it. Also, as I rule I will not cash points in on anything at the Qantas Store - points have such low value there.

        • Your QF status level makes a difference - flights become available 353 days out for platinum/gold members and 297 days out for silver/bronze members. If you can get your status up, it will increase your access to flights. Know the time of day when flights are released, and set a timer. Sit and bash refresh at that time every day to get first dibs on the flights.

        • If you can't get the seats you want, don't give up. Seats are released at various times for different reasons. You may see seats pop up randomly on the routing/timing that you're after.

        • Once you've booked flights, keep looking for better ones. Cancellation of existing bookings will cost you a few thousand points, however for the sake of a few points you might end up with a much shorter route in better planes with better partners. I recently had a terrible Frankfurt->Tokyo->Sydney route, but managed to change it for Frankfurt->Dubai->Sydney with much better connections.

        • Not all business/first class is the same. Research your preferred routes and look up the offerings that the OneWorld partners have to understand the product you're getting. Some Business Class is shit. Sites like https://www.seatguru.com/ will help you to understand the interior layouts and seats to avoid, too.

        • Subscribe to sites and twitter feeds of point specialist websites and forums. They will typically advise you of the release dates of massive flight releases. I did this recently and saw great access to Europe->Dubai->Australia Emirates flights in the first class suites.

        • Consider breaking your trips up into multiple one way flights. Example: if you can get outbound flights today, but want to get a return ticket you'll need to wait until the return flights are available (353/297 days out, as mentioned above) which could be weeks away. You may find that the outbound flights are gone by the time your inbound flights are available.

        • Use every option available to you to increase status and points. Look into the Qantas Points Club and the Green membership tier for 'extras'. I chase status credits as well as QFF points, so am always on the lookout for double status credit/point offers.

        • Look up every possible way of earning points and work out how to get as many as you can - within reason. Always try to work out the acquisition cost of points and see if they are worth chasing. As an example, I can earn a few points through filling up my car at BP service stations, but I have a discount fuel place around the corner that is regularly 10-20 cents per litre cheaper. In this scenario, I would essentially be overpaying for the points earned at BP, so I use the fuel discounter instead.

        • Chase credit card sign up bonuses as much as you can without ruining your credit rating. This is where the big chunks of points come from for me. When looking at the cards, make sure that you look at earn rates, caps, etc. Some cards will pay more points on low spend, some will pay better on high spend.

        • If you're a wine drinker, consider some of the bonus point offers at Qantas Wine. I found a case recently that had 30,000 bonus points! There's a few other tricks to use when it comes to Qantas Wine, but you'll work those out over time.

        • Be cautious buying and selling points, as they are occasionally policed. See if you have other points/status opportunities within your family, as transfers are allowed (to annual limits) and you may be able to get a family member with higher status to help you out.

Blah, blah, blah. Have a read of the forums, and the other points raised by users in this thread. Good luck.

        .

        • Very good

        • +1

One key point which you sort of touch on is that Points Club members will also get Status Credits for reward flights booked with points which can make it easy to gain/retain status if you are booking business class seats

        • +1

Your comments deserves more votes than this deal 😁

        • Sometimes and i emphasise sometimes the reward marketplace can be ok. I recently bought a new fridge for my car for 205k points, best price i could find from any store online for the same fridge was around $1800. 1.13 points per 1c isnt too bad. I agree on the flights are best value but for some of us that dont fly that often i have bought a shit load of hpuse hold items and other accessories at a fraction of the cost utilising bonus points. So either way if you patient can be good!

      This.

Folks that say availability isn't available, obviously don't know the tips and tricks or have a understanding of how it all works.

      • +1

Or like my mate with 3mill points, wants tickets for a family of 4 in business class which isn’t available without top status no matter what trick you play.
I travel solo and get what I want nearly every time with some patience in business class a year in advance

        • +1

I get mine six months out solo and I'm bronze, have got Fiji, Joburg. True, busier routes like Europe and USA can be tougher but there are drops here and there if you know where to look and sites that give the lowdown when these drops occur

        • +4

Yeah, if you travel solo and have no friends and plan a year ahead it isn't an issue lol

          • @[Deactivated]: Haha pretty much.. I’m surprised they offer any seats in business right now since they are charging $12k+ to go anywhere in Europe or North America

            • @Onemoredeal: I booked a business return with Singapore last year for me to Europe and my mates flying business class from Canberra to Europe with Qatar.

Unfortunately there was no first class availability, so I still have like a spare 230000 points with krisflyer that expire at the end of the year so either I sell them or I book another return flight to Singapore and maybe fly to Thailand for a couple of weeks lol

I'm gonna start building qff, virgin now.

The expiry is a pain with Krisflyer

      Key number to snare seats:

353 days prior to planned travel
      GMT +10 (AEST 10am)

Got award flights for 5 to the UK return, and J (err U) seats X 2 for RWC France this way.

      • how many points for 5 to the UK return? is that business class?

    • I'm lucky, my brother is Platinum Virgin and Gold Qantas….so I can just book through him and transfer points under family!

He flys alot for business, so it always helps but even then I don't see that many flights available as these groups post them and they disappear ASAP.

  • $279 on St George for 90k points too - 0.75pts per $1 up to $250k spend

    • I need a new card, I'm gonna cancel Amex.

Some decent options for 70-90k ATM.

It's a shame, none offer no international fees

      • Commbank do

  • Im real bad at math, a friend suggested I should get this if I have a mortgage with an offset account, and pay all my expenses with the credit card instead of my offset account and pay off the card each month before the interest free period expires.

Currently pay about $6,000 a month in expenses.

So should I get the credit card or nah?

    • +1

The key here is can you pay off the card each month? If the answer is you can then yes absolutely put all your expenses on a points earning card (this may not be the best option for an ongoing card for earning points - do some research on this as the Qantas Premier for example pays 1 point per $1). The benefit is you will use the cash in your offset to reduce your mortgage and you will earn points for all your spend. Right now you are getting 0 points but on a $6K monthly spend you could earn 72,000 Qantas points. The next trick is to churn a few card per year and you could be earning 500K+ points.

As always though if you don't have the discipline to pay off the cards each month and the time/patience to research this strategy may not be for you.

      • Thanks, yeah I definitely will pay the card off each month.

Looks like I will be getting a card then. Thanks again!!!

      • Silly question but at $1 = pt, howndoes a 6k spend oer month earn 72,000 pts?

    • Is this you?

      • Nope

  • +1

Question for the churners: to cash the 90k points, do you 'just' spend the $3k over 60 days and cancel the card when you see the points in your account. No penalties?

    • +1

Besides the $295 annual fee charged when you open the card, there aren't any penalties. but yeah, make sure you double check that the points have arrived in your QFF account before you cancel the card.

  • +1

Extremely easy process to apply, but a little concerning. Was asked the general employment questions, salary and expenses, assets & debt. However, it never asked for payslips to confirm employment and verify salary. All I had to do from an ID perspective was electronically verify my drivers licence.

Card was instantly approved and available within NAB Internet Banking. Just have to wait for the card to physically arrive to activate and use. Process took all of 5-10 minutes from initial application to onboarding to Internet Banking.

  • How long does it take for NAB to award the qantas points? I’ve hit the spend requirement within first statement but haven’t received the 90k bonus points (only received the regular points in everyday spend). Thanks

  • Is it essentially $690 for 120,000 points??

  • FYI - got the 90k bonus points and called to cancel. Representative said policy didn’t allow for pro rata refund as NAB wanted to deter CC churners. I said the reason was due to refinance of home loan and was given $100 refund as gesture of goodwill, I asked politely if possible for larger refund amount and was given $150 refund. So effectively paid $145 for 90k qantas points. Good result

  • NAB fraud detection are next level retarded. Make a less than a $2 purchased followed by a $570 Woolies purchase and my card gets blocked due to fraud. Another ozb tried to send me $3 via payid via his NAB account to my non-NAB account and his account gets blocked lol I'm sure gonna ask for the annual fee refund when it's time to ditch this card
