Thanks OP. Bought the 5800x3d upgrading from a 3600

    • +1

How much performance uplift are you expecting, and with what GPU (assuming this is for gaming)?

Considering doing the same thing :P

      • +5

I did this exact upgrade a few months ago.

Significant uplift in performance like maybe 50% increase in frames. These are gaming chips not productivity.

But….another whole level of buttery smoothness. That's the biggest impact of these 3d chips. Just no dips in frame rates even when the most hectic stuff is happening in game.

        Very much recommend.

        • Have to agree with this. It just made things so much smoother in game.

        • Am on a 3700x 3080ti 4k. Do you think it's worth the upgrade? I do see GPU dropping to 85 to 90 percent from time to time depending on games like zero dawn with dlss enabled.

          • +1

            @[Deactivated]: I suspect it would.

The real benefit of this chip is you can stay on the AM4 platform and also stay there for a while. Really now, this chip is only worthwhile for those on am4. Which is a lot of people mind you, that platform had a 5 year one.

The only other thing needed perhaps is a good cooler. I use the thermal right assassin. They have been posted here a lot lately.

            • @ChargerV6: Ya, I do have a U14S, should be enough even for a 7950X if need be. No, not looking at intel with that cooler ;)

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: I think at 4K I'd probably not bother, unless you specifically play a lot of extra CPU bound games. Zero Dawn for example is not gonna be all that different. Upgrade in a year or two when you can get a truly meaningful boost. Even your 3080 Ti isn't gonna be bottlenecked much by a 3700x.

            • @NoshTwin: Thanks mate :)

              • @[Deactivated]: @NoshTwin @John Doh. He said he's playing at 4k dlss. . not 4k . This chip will be an enormous upgrade from the 3700x. If you're playing dlss balanced you are gaming at 1440 . Performance is 1080. You will have big jump in frames and smoothness with the x3d .

5800x3d is even competitive with current gen of chips. It's an absolute stonker .

                • @Micsmit: No mate, its 4k 42" lg c2. On a 42" screen at 80cm distance, DLSS performance, balanced, FSR ultra(in most games) will all reduce quality by a huge margin. Only 2 usable features are Native or DLSS quality.

          • @[Deactivated]: At 4K I'd say nah, judging by this video by HUB. I mean, there's still a gain there but I dunno if I'd say it's worth it. That said, you're in a completely different budget to me so maybe you'll see the value in it. At least you'll be able to keep your AM4 platform going for a long time yet.

            • +1

@Diji: Ya right, thanks for that video, very informative.

              • +1

@[Deactivated]: You may also want to check out their 3600 vs 5600 video. They don't test 4K but you can reasonably approximate it by just assuming the margins are slimmer than the 2560x1440 results. Might help you decide whether its worth the cash.

                • +1

@Diji: Thanks. With DLSS its almost 1440 anyway, I guess even an upgrade to 5600 temporarily is well worth it for me.

                • +1

@Diji: I watched the 3700X vs 5600X video and 5600 vs 5700X video and decided that 5600 will give me the right enough boost to make the 3080Ti run at full speed all the time at 4K. Ordered the 5600 for 186 bux. I can surely make the same by selling 3700X with the free wraith cooler that came with it. I use a large noctua cooler anyway.

I initially thought I will go with 5800X3D, but then eventually I have to upgrade the RAM also from 16 to 32GB. If I have to upgrade both CPU and RAM(later), then no point staying AM4. 5600 made more sense and its almost free upgrade with the selling of 3700X.

                  • @[Deactivated]: Nice, hope you enjoy your new CPU when it arrives!

                    • +1

                      @Diji: Thanks mate.

                  • @[Deactivated]: You should upgrade to 32gb anyway now. Cross gen is over. A number of games are requiring. 32 in real world 4k dlss I'm finding now

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: well the 5800x3d is the best gaming CPU on the AM4 platform and can get a few more years out of your rig. but are you better off saving the cash for a future upgrade to AM5 or something yet to come? or even more likely a RTX5080 in a couple of years time.

            https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/3481vs4823vs3485/AMD-Ry…

the CPU upgrade is about 18% raw upgrade.

            • @Antikythera: Ya, I have 7X3D in mind, but sometimes i feel, I can just do away with 5800X3D with another jump to 4090 when 5090 comes out but more 32 GB games are coming out.

              • @[Deactivated]: apparently the 7600x3D might be the way to go.

the 7950X3D only has the 3D cache on half its 12 cores. it parks the other cores while gaming.

so for gaming a 7600X3D (if it eventuates) will likely be close to comparable to the 7950X3D in games, for a fraction of the price.

                • @Antikythera: 7950X3D has 16 cores and has 8 Cores with extra cache. There wont be a 7600X3D. We will have a 7800X3D releasing in April with 8 cores.

What you are speaking about (12 Cores) is a 7900X3D and it will lose to both 7950X3D and 7800X3D in gaming by a small margin due to having cache on only 6 cores.

        • what GPU is it paired with?

  • I have an ARC A750 GPU

Would a 5600 be best for this card and a potential GPU upgrade in 5 years time?

    • 5600 and a GPU upgrade in 3 years of you don't want to be stuck at fuzzy 1080p

      • A750 is actually improving every month with driver updates!

Its now somewhere near a 3060 in terms of performance and hopefully exceeds it by end of this year.

  • I upgraded from a 5600x to a 5800X3D. Very happy however it is a warmer beast than the 5600x. Im running it in an NR200p and under stress, the 5600x wouldnt exceed 60 degrees. The 5800X3D now runs about 75-85 degrees under stress.

    • I'm considering the same. Is the performance differential worth the upgrade/cost?

      Cheers

      • Its paired with a 6800XT and all the games I have been running lately have been silky smooth.

I think the main difference is some games, there may be a miniature control lag or something.. I experienced that sometimes with the 5600x like the game was trying to catch up. Absolutely no delay or slow downs with the 5800X3D.

I also rationalised the purchased that this was going to max out my AM4 build and I can jump to the AM5 infrastructure a few years later when the costs have come down and the technology matured a bit.

        • Thanks for sharing!

My thought process is the same. I bought AM4 too late and I'm not ready to invest in AM5 and DDR5 so I will just maximise AM4 and use that for as long as it lasts.

    • Damn what cooler are you running? My 5600 exceeds 90 degrees under load

      • +1

        I am running a Vetroo V5

        https://www.amazon.com.au/Vetroo-Cooler-Processor-Universal-…

        Highly recommended.

      • 5600 shouldn't be getting that hot, even with stock cooler. I'd investigate, repaste/reseat, check the case flow, fan curve, dust etc.

        • No it shouldn't but this is while running pretty demanding games at high FPS. I don't think the stock cooler does a good job

  • The 5800x3d is an excellent CPU and upgrading my gaming PC from the old Intel i5-2500k was worth every penny. Upgrading to the 5800x3d has made gaming a much smoother experience for me.

    • +7

Getting anything off the shelf would make gaming a smoother experience from a 2500k lol that chip is over 10 years old…

      • +1

2500k really only became absolute about 3 years ago… Intel (and AMD) just never really made anything worthwhile upgrading during that time…

      • -1

I completely agree that upgrading to a newer CPU off the shelf would definitely improve gaming performance compared to the outdated i5-2500k. By the way, I also happen to own a Nintendo Switch.

      • -1

        I7-2600k on the otherhand…

  • Would you not be better off buying a 7600x than half of these? (genuine question)

EDIT: Looks like it needs a new socket

    • +4

Not if you have an existing AM4 system that you can just drop a new processor in to. 7600x would require new motherboard, ram…

    • +3

Possibly if you’re building a system from scratch, but there’s a lot of people that are happy to just continue sitting on AM4 with their already existing systems, and not have to go through the trouble of buying a new motherboard and DDR5 ram just to move to the 7000 series.

The 5800x3D for example is a little more pricy than a 7600x and both perform very neck and neck with each other, but the 5800x3D comes out cheaper if you already own an AM4 motherboard and DDR4 ram, but yeah if you’re building something new, it’d probably be smarter at this point to just use the AM5 platform for future proofing sake.

  • Is a Corsair H100i Platinum SE 240mm a good cooler for the 5800x3d? I'm upgrading from a Ryzen 3600 but still on the fence, just 'cause I love the quiet coolness of the 3600.

    • +1

FWIW Seen a few YT videos where they've cooled the 5800X3D with some very cheap coolers and it still performed surprsingly well.

  • +1

For those upgrading to the 5800X3D, what do you do with your old CPU’s? Not sure what I would do with my 3600

    • +2

Would also like to know how much a 5600x would fetch used

    • +3

Sell them. See how much they go for used on marketplace/Gumtree and base your price around that.

    • +2

I was gonna throw my 3600 in a PC for my parents, should be able to find a cheap mobo for it.

    • I was going to throw it in a budget AM4 system to upgrade a i7-4770 system. I'd already bought all the components. Unfortunately, I saw a good deal on a 5700x and ended up selling it on marketplace.

    • $100 is about the going rate for a 3600

  • Worth upgrading from 5900x to 5800x3d for gaming?

    • +5

as one Tech Tuber said "if your at the top of your game, then yes… otherwise not really"

    • Is this an upgrade?
I have an 3700x and considering either 58003d or 5900?

  • +2

    Any deals on am4 motherboards?

    • Remember 3 years ago, when you could get fully usable motherboards for $80.

      • $80? Bought many refurbished/6 months warranty [JW Computers] for $54.95 [hell, I even bought 3 Aorus Pro/Elite W-Fi @ $79.95]…but I think B450 are getting hard to source…almost never see any - even used - for less than $110Real shame!

        • Yeah I got my auros around $90 but those deals are long gone

  • WTF I just picked up my 5800X3D from BPC this morning….

    • Return it?

      • doesnt look like I can without restocking fee. If I'm wrong someone please correct me!

        • +4

Stock it on the shelf for them

  • +3

Well crap, wasn't expecting to buy a CPU today.

  • +2

    5800X3D just sold out :(

    Edit: Scorptec has a handful

    • +1

Cheers, got one. A few bucks more but still a great deal.

  • What do you guys recommend to upgrade from the Ryzen 5 2600?

    • Depends how much you want to spend. Best value is the 5700x, however if you aren't able to use 8 cores (i.e. if you only care about gaming) the 5600 is going to give you the same performance.

You might be able to get a used one quite cheap too

  • Is there much of a point upgrading from a 3700x + 3060ti to a 5950x with the same GPU?

    • +1

If your doing something that makes use of the extra cores, then yes. If its for gaming, the IPC improvements are still better in the 5950x but a 5800X3D is the best bet for games.

      • I use a lot of Adobe products for photo editing.
        Worth it?

    • -1

      1. Do you need extreme multicore performance? (VM's, video encoding, content creation)
      2. What is your current motherboard? Sustained 5950X multicore performance requires above average VRM's
      3. What is your current cooler? 5950X requires dual tower/dual fan or 240/360mm AIO

        1. I've got an Asus PRIME X570-P
        2. I've got a Kraken 280mm liquid cooler.
        • VRM's and cooler are fine for 5950X
If you don't feel Adobe performance is slow now, hold off. 5950X is $704 at Amazon AU as a reprice with stock incoming. Add another BNPL sale and save $100 when you can pick it up for ~$600

  • +1

Can't bring myself to buy. Mostly because these prices don't even come close to matching lowest ever

    • +1

      They come pretty close

  • Sold out at Scorptec had it in basket, setting up after pay and then some error. Ohh well didn’t really need it hahaha 3700x will keep things going

  • +5

Looks like it’s back the 5800x3d but looks like they increased prices from 569 to 579 dirty

    • Every dollar counts…

    • My wholesale buy price from suppliers is about $525. Decent enough margins even without the $10 increase.

  • Cheers OP got a 5800X3D from Scorptec, best price I've seen since I started looking a few weeks ago.

  • +1

5800X3D scorptec link shows as 492.15 after discount

  • Hmm I have a 3800x and 6900xt. Is there much to be gained by upgrading to the 5800x3d?

  • Got the 5800x3d. Now need to figure out what to upgrade my 2070 super to..

  • I have a Ryzen 7 1700 from ages ago. Thinking of either 5800x3d or 5900x. I play on a 1440p 144hz monitor and saw a few reviews that they're not so different at that resolution / hz. Is that true? I have a RTX3080 rn too.

    • I caved and bought the last 5900X for $509.15 and a Arctic Liquid Freezer II 280mm for $159 from PCCG. I'm going to try the Wraith Spire I got from the 1700 for a bit I think.

      I'm wondering about RAM now, I have a couple G.Skill Aegis 3200 CL16 I picked up cheap

  • Anyone had to deal with afterpay not allowing the transaction to go through? ("sorry we're unable to approve your order")

    • Do you have enough credit?
Afterpay can limit how much you can use

      • It says $600, so it should be enough

  • Thanks OP! Upgraded my 3700X to the 5800X3D tonight. Already flashed the BIOS in anticipation…

    • Why do you need to flash the bios?

      • Depending how old the mobo is it might be required to support the CPU, or just to add new features.
Mine had an update last year that says "Improve system performance for AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D".

      • It’s a B450 MOBO, so just to make sure it’s compatible and a simple “plug and play” installation.. I don’t fancy rebuilding my whole system

  • Does anyone know what the returns policy is from
    Computer Alliance?

I ordered a 5800x3D and it has shipped but yet to arrive, but after investigating my system more closely I feel my money would be better put towards a new GPU.

    • +1

According to the listing it says….
