All for nostalgia but this is the worst controller I've ever used and that's from someone who grew up only with a N64 until a PS3 - no going back!

    • +5

Same boat. Not sure why you're getting negs. It's true!

      • +1

A controller tied to a subscription service is a thoroughly over priced purchase as well. Can't re-map buttons, controller can't be used with anything other the Switch.
Better off with a Brawler64 or other 3rd party controllers that have modernised the N64 layout.

        • Yep yet more overpriced junk that the fanboys will not only buy, but defend to the grave.

        • +3

It's a bluetooth controller that works on PC.

        • +2

The brawler 64 seems like better value and proposition.

    • +9

Only reason I would want one is for N64 emulator, as finding a good button map for the 6 button right control on standard 4 button controllers is sometimes tricky/awkward.

    • +1

IMO the best catalogue of first and third party games on any console but also the worst controller of any console.

      • -2

My thoughts too. Epic games. It hasn't aged well. Loved it at the time. Likewise, SNES, bit too small for bigger hands, though as a kid, amazing.

    • +3

Yep, don't buy this thinking it's a good replacement for the Switch Pro Controller.

It's only in such demand because of limited stock and nostalgia.

(To those of us who owned and loved the N64 back in the 90s though, $70 is a bargain. It looks and feels very true to the original, bringing back some of the joy of that time in our lives, and can double as a second controller for some games in a pinch).

    • +4

Man I would neg you as I had such fond memories of the n64 controller, then got one and realised I was blinded by nostalgia

    • +10

Holding this controller releases endorphins, memories of a better time. Compared to most drugs $70 is cheap.

    • Agreed. However, the nostalgia is strong.
      I bought a gamecube-style N64 controller for my 64 recently and didn't enjoy it.
Picked up a used OG N64 controller and MK64 was a lot more fun…

  • +2

Let’s hope this will lower the crazy reselling price on eBay :(

    • +1

Every time more and more people buy them… just to sell on eBay!

Is there a reason they only sell these in batches? Is it just a supply issue, or is it marketing?

      • +1

Probably just Nintendo being restricting like usual.

      • -1

You don't make money by paying rent on warehouses for unsold N64 controllers. And warehouse them Nintendo will have to because they can't just offload them to other retailers, it's NSO exclusive.

  • -3

Lets hope they don't bulk cancel orders like last time….

    • They only cancelled orders for users who weren't Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, right?

So probably no risk of that unless you're not a subscriber.

      • I subbed immediately after placing order, they still cancelled and kept sub money.

Still think it's a ridiculous paywall for a 'chance' to purchase a controller

        • +5

The controller's main use-case is to play the Nintendo 64 catalog of games on the Switch, which are behind the same paywall. Sounds logical to me.

Plus, it somewhat doubles as a scalper deterrent.

          • @mboy: The controller works on other games not just the online subscription ones…

I take issue with the subscription to maybe be able to buy hardware if you're lucky. Ironically if I could secure the controller I'd pay for the subscription, but I don't want the sub without the controller

            • @cook99: I know, but I specifically said "main use-case" which is true.

I hear where you're coming from though. I think with a bit of time, the stock of the N64 controllers will stabilise like it did for the NES and SNES controllers - so then you won't need to rush into a sub.

        • Subbing immediately AFTER placing an order is not the same as making an order with a valid membership.

          • @Morien: Aware of that, they placed no restriction and took the order without a sub and later reneged on it, which is fine as I know sub was after.
Doesn't change the fact it's a crappy business practice to require sub in the first place…
As I said last deal, hats off to all the Switch modders based on Nintendo crumby practices

    • Never had issues with buying from Nintendo store even with high demand products.

And to sub is only like $16 a year on a family plan.

  • +1

I still have my old N64. I have always been tempted to sell it.

    • +2

Sell it to me. I regret selling my childhood N64.

      • Me too! Particularly now that I have kids that I want to pwn in perfect dark…

        • +3

You could get an xbox 360/one/s/XS/XSX, the port of Perfect Dark is pretty good. On the X consoles they run in 4K so when playing 4 player each player gets a 1080p section of screen. Perfect Dark is included in Rare Replay along with most other Rare games.

        • It's all fun and games till they get better than you. Damn kids have too much time…

        • Its fun playing Perfect Dark with Mario characters on a real N64 console.
Its good still being able to win against the kids as I get smashed on the Switch.

      • If you want to buy a N64 console buy an NTSC one and get an everdrive. All the games on 1 cart and heaps of extra games available mods, hacks etc.

    • +1

Just tried mine after it being stuck in international storage for several years. Pleased to see my old Zelda save still working, but the 320p output looks terrible on a modern TV. Had fun, but I'll emulated it going forward.

      • 320p? Huh wasn't it 576p?

        • It depends on the game.

For example Conker runs at 292, Turok games ran at 480 , Perfect Dark could run at 448 and some off memory ran at 640 but it depends on which part of the game too.

  • Awesome

  • +1

What is the value of these over a standard switch pro controller?

    • +6

      Nostalgia, basically.

If you don't have nostalgia for the N64 controller and/or you don't have any appetite to play N64 games using their native controller, then there's nothing to be gained - stick with the Pro Controller.

    • +3

If you’re plying N64 emulated games via the online service then I’m sure some of the games benefit from having an original design N64 controller. In particular games that use all 6 of the right hand side buttons.

    • I use mine with the original N64 and a bluetooth dongle:

  • +1

People ask why inflation is real, another daily reminder on Ozbargain.

    • +1

I can't remember how much the original N64 controllers were, but I bet these are less adjusted for inflation. ChatGPT didn't know the original retail price so that detail must be lost to history.

      • +1

They were generally around $50. I remember saving for one. They have definitely become cheaper in real $ terms. Sometimes on sale they were a little less but we only ever had 2 controllers

        • +2

$50 at N64 launch in Australia is worth over $95 today.

    • +1

People ask why inflation is real

      Who's asking this…

  • +1

    Does this work on PC?

  • Since N64 games are only available with the NSO Expansion Pack, do you need to have the Expansion Pack as well to buy those or will a regular NSO subscription do, i.e. the free 7-day trial?

    • +2

Regular NSO should be fine based on my own buying experience.

  • +2

yep got one of these when it was released day one love playing goldeneye with it.

  • If my account is linked to a family pass, can I still buy this?

    • You can.

I'm on a family pass and can still buy and have done some many times

  • -8

Call me the devil but every $ counts right now — These are the easiest things in the world to flip. I'd suggest trying to buy some even if you don't have a Switch. Unethical? Yes. Nintendo fans love overpaying? Definitely yes.

    You can get 2x returns.

  • +1

Now for some SSBU edition GameCube controllers, please Nintendo.

    • +1

Technically they did release the wired SSBU edition wired gamecube controller and the USB gamecube adaptor

Still can buy them on Amazon

    • Also cheaper to imagine you have one….

  • +1

    In-Stock and available now.

  • Got two, finally. Seemed pretty easy, hit the page at 1pm, checkout page took 30 seconds to load but was simple from there.

  • Spinning wheel of death on payment 😵‍💫

  • Got 2 as well. Easy. I'd already ordered 2 before, so it only let me get 2 more.

    oops stuck on spinning too

  • -1

Thanks for this, just ordered 4

  • spinning :(

  • -1

    Thanks, got 4.

  • Got confirmation page and order number but no email yet..anyone get the email?

    • No confirmation page, no email but it wont let me buy 2 more so its registered im at my limit.

    • +1

Same happened to me but just got the confirmation through now.. took about 5 mins after order to show up as I got in right on 1. Order also didn't show in the "my orders" section and now that page isnt even rendering, getting an exception. Think the site is just getting overloaded but orders are still accepted.

I would recommend just copying that order number reference down somewhere until you get the confirmation.

Edit: site is now loading again and I can see the order in 'my orders'

    • +1

The email always takes 10-15 mins to arrive. Check your bank - if you've been charged, you're usually good. Wait a bit longer for the email.

    • +1

i got mine 15 minutes after the purchase.

  • Spinning wheel of death. Nintendo have debited my account though

  • +2

    missed out again. bs

    • +2

Still in stock. Website just went down for a bit. Go go go!

      • +1

looks like my spinning page actually worked :)

  • +1

I've been trying for the past five minutes but I keep getting "There has been an error processing your request" when trying to check out.

Seems the website cannot be accessed now: "An error has happened during application run. See exception log for details."

    • +1

I had two tabs open with 2 in each cart just in case one of the tabs crashed like last time.

During payment on one of them the cart updated to 4. Looks like im having splitscreen goldeneye sessions with the boys.

    • +1

That's happened a bunch of times. They're still in stock, keep trying.

    • Got one, phew!
I was going to get a SNES controller but that went out of stock by the time I went to pay at 1:02pm so had to remove it from my cart but then the website crashed.

  • +1

    Wow site crashed haha

  • got them

  • -3

Page crashed while checking out, now it says I've exceeded my limit of 4… What BS

    • If it says that, it's probably because your order went through. Check your bank, were you charged?

      • No charge or confirmation email, just a hard block from buying, another disappointed customer 😞

        • Wow, that sucks. Have you bought the N64 controllers before?

What most don't realise is the "4 limit" is an account limit, not a transaction limit. So if you bought 4 controllers previously (say, last year), you can't buy any more on the same account.

          • @mboy: I have zero.
Made purchase last month without sub when they allowed it, they cancelled that order.
This time it let me add to cart but checkout failed which seems to have locked my account somehow

        • check again, i have my order on payment complete but no confirmation email yet

  • Managed to place an order between crashes. Took the money and didnt show anything in order history. 5 minutes later managed to get back in and order is now being shown as processed

  • +6

Just grabbed 2 more, have 4 total

Love this controller, I can understand the hate for them, but growing up in that era, they were the best for 64games that we still play now

    • -1

      I accidentally bought 4

    • Playing Goldeneye with duel controllers is super epic.
Also when playing with three other mates is just a all out great time.
      Love the z trigger.

      • Nothing beats the Z

  • People do realise it's limit of four per account yeah?

  • +1

Managed to grab a couple. I see the SNES controllers have now gone out of stock…. did think about buying a couple of those at the same time but figured I already have a few 8bitdo controllers that feel and work like SNES controllers on the Switch.

    • The SNES and NES ones feel original, all the Nintendo and Sega controllers feel so authentic that you forget they are faster because of the Bluetooth and no cable getting in the road haha

      • What? Cable will always be faster than bluetooth

  • +1

Thanks for the heads up i have been waiting so long for this and missed all prior times. I have a confirmed order this time although it was laggy AF so we'll see…

  • Finally after a year I got some

  • +2

It's 1:20pm and still in stock.
Looks like the scalper tides may be changing soon…
