Government Transactions for Credit Card Spend Requirements

I'm looking to apply for a credit card for the signup bonuses since I've got some ATO and Centrelink payments coming up. Will payments to these count towards the 90day spend requirements? I know they probably don't accumulate rewards points.

These are the cards I was looking at:

Anyone tried paying to ATO or Centrelink using these cards. Are there any other cards with sign up bonuses that you have had success with?

Usually government payments never count to your credit card spend.

The easy way to get around this is to use a service like Sniip, or Payment Logic. This way you get the full spend and pay a minimal fee (usually a half percent more than the ATO would charge).

However if you own a business all these fees are tax deductible, and frequent flyer points are nontaxable. It's a win win.

In the alternative load the funds to a Revolut wallet and then pay via there or cashout. The MCC is financial services and this counts as spend as anything else.

    • With loading into Revolut do you mean by the adding money to the account via card? I've tried this before but got hit with cash advance fees, will this count toward spend?

      • They have changed this it's not a cash advance, which is why Revolut charges now (1.6 or something like that). At least for HSBC, St George/Westpac and Citi that I have tried.

What I would suggest you do is top up a small amount ($25) if you are concerned and wait for the statement to arrive or call customer service who will be able to tell you how the transaction comes through.

      • No it won't. When Rev first launched in Oz, it was gold for this, but the banks cottoned on remarkably quickly. Citi was still working last year, as in they awarded points and no cash fee, but it did charge cash interest (so a sort of hybrid). Haven't tried this since they became NAB. In general though, Rev isn't an option for this (the UK version stayed as an option for many years, but the Aussie version only lasted a few months).

Sniip is (one of the) good options, but you'll pay a 1.5% fee. Whether it's worth it is up to you, as a normal transaction probably not, but if you need the spend to get across the line for a SUB, it almost definitely is worth it.

Still working on my HSBC and STG

    • On my st George card it came through as 'payments and transfers' which doesn't sound like it'll be points earning..

  • Pretty sure I read a few people have done it through beem it successfully.

  • I used BEEM IT to pay ATO last year and it met the bonus requirements. I used ANZ REWARDS card.

Has anyone used Westpac Altitude Platinum Qantas Credit Card to pay ATO through BPAY via BEEM? Did it count towards the $4k minimum spend for the bonus points? It says in the terms and conditions it doesn’t include BPAY but I’ve done this on other cards and it shows up as “Beem it spend” on the account. So does the bank even know what the Beem it transaction was for?
