I just bought a work laptop a month ago damn.

How’s the battery life on these? If I were to source a replacement for the existing one could I get a full days usage without plugging in?

      • Batteries could be between 80-90% on majority of the units. We just avoid putting in the deal because we have to move stock

So putting it 75% and above helps you move them faster? 🤔

        • +10

becomes an issue if even one person gets below the base, just helps us avoid trouble when moving large quantity

          • @untech:

We just avoid putting in the deal because we have to move stock

You should avoid putting in the deal because some are not 80-90%…

      • will indeed depend on usage :P

    • +5

I am using the exact same laptop for my daily work, except i5-8300H & 32GB RAM. Battery is at ~80% life left after 4 years. It would only last me 3-4 hours at max doing browsing + some dev work.

      • soldered ram?

        • No, and pretty good to open up and replace it. Screws and very light clips, no need for any special tools to pry it open.

We've had these at work. Like most high powered thin and light laptops, it has poor cooling relative to the heat it needs to disperse and gets uncomfortably warm on the lap even with just light browsing. We've also seen some occasional behaviour on multiple units where when it gets hot it suddenly reports the battery is critically low (even though it's fully charged and plugged in) and drops into hibernation immediately. A minute later you turn it back on, it picks up where it left off, and it agrees that the battery is full after all.

          • +1

@rhodges: Oh and they also have an annoying way of becoming unresponsive for something like a whole minute or evem more after certain hardware changes, like unplugging a monitor from HDMI or switching from AC to battery power.

      A riddle for you:

You have one guys saying 7-12hrs and another guy saying 3-4hrs…

One of them is telling the truth and the other is lying..

One of them is trying to sell you the laptop, the other already owns one.

      Who is telling the truth?

      • +2

        Both are telling the truth.
X1 Extreme G1 has discrecte video card (1050i) and integrated interl video card. If you turn off discrecte one , it may last 7 hours on battery, otherwise 3-4 hours.

        • +2

But the 3-4 hour guy said all he was doing was browser and dev, probably not cranking up that 1050ti much, if at all.

        • +1

Wow that makes it a Schrödinger's laptop ;) You can't know the battery life until you open it !!

      • +2

We are very careful with our words and advised that there are no gurantees on the exact timings.

You are welcome to make your decision based on the other guys number

But if you can turn off discrete mode you can get good numbers

      • +5

        A riddle for you:

        Time. Is the answer time?

      • Another owner of an X1E Gen 1 with i7-8750H here. 3-4hrs is fair to say doing normal dev work (not gaming/video editing). 7-12hrs is absolute rubbish!

        • It's mostly desktop class hardware (high TDP cpu), and the battery isn't that large. It's just physics that battery life won't be great.

          • @superroach: Just to quibble, H-class CPU is 35-45W TDP. It's not really desktop-class.

    • +1

Not a chance. I have had this laptop since it came out and it's battery life has always been terrible. (2 to 3 max)

That being said as others have pointed out if you switch off the dGPU it runs longer but I would still say around 4 to 5 hours.

I have noticed that it seems to be last longer in windows 11.

Should point out I have the super power hungry 4k version. Also redo the thermal paste on them… Massive improvement in temps.

Would totally recommend for anyone not far from power.

      • +1

About same battery life as my legion 5 pro 3070.

      • +1

It runs full speed in Win 10 Pro and the fan noise is much louder than any Thinkpad laptops I owned. But Win 11 made a significant change on power setting. If you choose the lowest power scale (similar to power saver mode), the high speed fan noise suddenly disappers. Though I have not specifically tested battery life since switched to Win 11, I do believe battery improve a lot in Win 11. The lowest power setting is more than enough for me to do my daily work.

Bear in mind, the battery life depends on CPU type ( i7-8750H's TPD is 45w, H means high performance) and dGPU. If you want laptop of long battery life, choose Macbook (apple silicon) or laptop of CPU's TDP 15W or lower.

        • Exactly, you don't get one so it runs all day.

It also runs slower not plugged in, I can't remember why. It either drops its maximum throttle temp or caps the maximum wattage. You can get a bit of performance back using throttlestop (and running an old bios) but you are still a fair way off what it runs plugged in.

All these dGPU ultralights are basically the same though, My newer work laptop is a HP ZBook Power G7 which runs a newer 10850H but similarish GPU in the A2000 is also just as crap on its battery with the added negative of the screen being rather terrible!

Still they run most of my engineering software from anywhere, something I can't do with desktop!

      • +1

Yup. Got a new tube of Arctic MX-4 delivered yesterday. Going to do a re-paste of my X1 Extreme later today.

        • Its a wonderfully simple task, captive screws on the cover. Numbered screws on the heatsink, only really the tiny fan connectors to worry about.

Dropped the temps enough on mine that the fans don't ramp up in regular use which is lovely.

    • I have one with the newer 9750h and I am lucky to get over 4 hours even after undervolting the cpu. Even just web browsing the battery life is shite, at least on mine.
Was a rude awakening coming from a MacBook Pro.
      Machine is great otherwise though

    1. Will be using 2 x 1tb sticks for 2tb option, rest just one stick
    2. After Pay is now live
  • How long til they ship? I'm travelling interstate on Thursday so needed to know what address to put on my order :)

    • +1

It's a public holiday in Victoria on Monday, first dispatch will be on Tuesday. Would recommend putting the other address

  • Theres no sim card slot on this one is there?

    • +1

      No

  • +6

These are crackers of a laptop, performance when they launched was top tier - 10 to 12000 cpu passmark.

    The ram amount is fantastic.

Even at 100%, the battery wasnt great. Imo a big fault of that was windows. You could get 4 hours max. It was a high wattage cpu, and a discrete gpu remember!

Gpu performance was good, its good enough for video editing with gpu acceleration. It is slightly too slow for desktop vr, games have gotten to advanced. Beat saber is good tho.

Any other qs shout out, i paid maybe 2.8k for this setup in 2019

    • Battery would also depend on the variant. Did you have the 4k screen variant?

      • I had the 1080p one specifically for better battery life. It didnt make that much difference.

    • +2

Another thing while i remember. The trackpoint is great, give them a try. The keyboard imo has the largest travel of any x1e, and possibly any lenovo in the past decade. Its the closest to say a x220 style keyboard you can get, they feel great to type on.

    • +3

      negative

    • +1
  • +3

If you get one of these be sure to check out Throttlestop, you can probably undervolt quite a bit to improve performance and battery life.

  • Since this laptop has dGPU, will I be able to get more than 50-60hz with an external monitor?
Intel graphics is limited to 60hz afaik.

    • Best look up the spec sheet of the 1050ti that it has (mobile version)

  • Hey friends, looking to buy one laptop for my kid. Have very limited knowledge about laptops. is this a good laptop and deal? I have never purchased refurb product before so can anyone comment is it good idea to buy refurb product in terms of quality?

    • what will kid be using it for (apart from Roblox :P) ? and how old is kid?

      • school homework, private tuition homework etc

        • Yeah this will be fine for that, just be aware of 15 inch size to make sure it fits in backpack/etc if need it to be portable. These models in particular are very tough vs a crapbox Acer or similar :)

          • @bdl: Thanks mate. How old are these refurb machines generally? dont want to buy any product which breakdown in few years..so little skeptical with refurb word :-(

            • +1

@toyapple9: Looking at this review, maybe around 5 years or so? https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X1-Extreme-i7-…

However, since targeted at business, the quality of these when first built is way more durable than other makes or consumer-targeted models, look at other UN tech deals in past to see the refurb quality that UN tech sell themselves are happy selling.

At this refurb price, you could always buy a second if your kid smashes it or you experience problems…

        • +2

Performance-wise it should be more than enough, even for light gaming.
It may be a bit too big and heavy for a child. Also others mentioned that the battery life isn't too great.

    • +2

Could do a lot worse at this price point. Like the bloke above said, battery life might leave a bit to be desired. Might not be ideal if they’re lugging it around all day at school, but they can always just bring the charger with em. Graphics card is good enough to play games that aren’t too demanding. If my old man grabbed this for me, I wouldn’t be complaining, put it that way - a few years ago this was a premium product.

      • +3

and also if another kid was bullying me at school i could whack them with this laptop and the laptop would survive. Can't say that about a Vostro :)

        • +2

😂 not wrong, Lenovo build sturdy machines

    • +2

      This is a gaming machine.
Kids need something lightweight with better battery life to take to and from school.
Better to get a separate desktop gaming machine at home, and limit use.
e.g. refurb office SFF with low profile GPU added.

      • also worth looking for laptops that support usbc charging since its way more convenient if you forget your charger to borrow someone elses' rather than that custom 230W brick you're going to get with this one

    • would recommend the t480s or the 7390 linked. would be sufficient for school work

  • +1

OP, can you confirm the 2x USB-C are in fact thunderbolt 3 ports? If they are, it would be worth mentioning that.

    • thanks for the heads up corrected

  • @untech Approximately how long is left on the Premier Support Warranty and any idea if it the onsite support applies internationally?

    • warranty is different on every unit

  • When does the warranty expire with Lenovo?

    • warranty is different on every unit

      • +1

Thanks is it generally a few months or a we talking some have more than a year left? Seems odd due to age that's all. They must have extended warranties for sure to say 4 or possibly even 5 years

  • Is there an option to upgrade to 32 GB ram?

    • yes, upgrade option is there

  • do you have any 15-16" laptops with numberpad, 1tb ssd and 16-32gb Ram?

  • Tempting but my X1 Gen 5 is still kicking on strong

  • +1

Woah, this is excellent. I owned an X1 Carbon Gen 5 for 4 years, and I've fallen in love with the X1 series. Unfortunately, I needed more power and moved away from the X1 series, buying a Zephyrus G14. I was heavily considering the X1 Extreme, but I didn't want a 15" form factor. The X1 Extreme I would have been looking at would have been this specific model, or maybe a model higher. I'm happy with my G14 Zephyrus though, but an X1 Extreme experience for this price is a bargain. People don't realize how serious of a laptop this is, although it really does depend on how good condition this refurb will be in.

  • Does this have space for a second ssd? and will still be same price next week Wednesday

  • Can you confirm the T480S comes with LTE/WWAN card included, not just a sim slot?

    • Touch screen variant should have it https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/13458886/redir. @doperst can you chime in.

you can leave a note as well and we can check for you

      • If you can confirm it shoot me a DM, I'd pick up a few of them. I've had a few issues buying refurb laptops claiming to have WWAN in the past and don't trust 'should do' anymore

      • +1

Yep, mine T480s touch did come with WWAN card. I didn't need it so I removed it and installed a second SSD into this m.2 slot.

        • confirmed as well, you can leave a note during purchase so fullfilment sends you the correct one

  • +1

Is the screen very bright? I saw a 14 inch fhd lenovo recently ips. It was 250 nits max. Not very bright.

    • It's bright ish, and also Matte on the 1080p one which is great. But it isn't that usable outdoors on a bright day. Most laptops arn't tbh

      • Yes well this model being sold is 1080p.

      • Yes well my relatives bought a t480s and it’s not very bright. Tbh it’s very dim.

  • +3

Just want to put in a few words for the seller.

Bought an x1 yoga from their previous deal for my sis. Had problem with the screen. Returned with no drama. Took a while for the replacement but they delivered their promise. It's good to know the seller is really behind their products, esp important for the refurbs.

I'll definitely buy more from them. But I'll skip this one. Too big and too power hungry for my use case. May fit others who need larger screen, intensive GPU usage and have power nearby.

  • With the ram and the hdd upgrades:

Will the ram stick be matching with the existing, or are they prebuilt?

For HDD upgrades, just existing stock on prebuilt units, or you will switch it out for a new SSD?

Can you confirm brightness of the screen?

Also, do you check for scratches on the screen?

    • +1

      ram speeds are matched

with ssd, generally new, but in case we use previous ssd, we test the health before installation.

      300 nits

      scratches on screen are checked

      • scratches on screen are checked

        and then, what?

        • They check them then ship the devices. :P

          • +1

@xuqi: At least they tried. So many companies just wanna move stock as quickly as possible with absolutely no consideration.

  • +1

Would love a gen 3 Oled

  • @untech Mate, about to buy one. Do they have USB c chargers? Or is the old style pin one?

    • +1

Square pin, take a look at reviews linked above and you’ll see it

    • +1

comes with Lenovo pin but you can charge it via usb-c as well.

  • +1

    So 32GB + 1TB is not possible?

    • added one for you

  • bummer, none left of the $699 laptops. Please contact me if one comes becomes available

  • How does the x1 Carbon differ from the Extreme?

    • +2

X1 Carbon — 15W CPU, 14" screen, light-weight long battery life, soldered on RAM
      X1 Extreme — 45W CPU, 15.6" screen, dGPU, slim desktop replacement, 2x SO-DIMM + 2x M.2 slots

Similar name, and both are top-of-the-line ThinkPad builts.
