Baseus GaN 100W Charger QC PD Type C 4x USB Port $67.14 ($65.56 with eBay Plus) (Was $89.99) Shipped @ Baseus eBay

700
SMAR15SMAR17

The Baseus eBay store has dropped the price of their 100W GaN chargers to $78.99 from their normal $89.99 price that is then further discounted using the eBay codes.

Be aware it has the funky Chinese style plug where the pins are upside down, so the cable runs from the top. Personally, I prefer this as it means the cable runs upwards from the powerpoint without having to do a loop underneath then up to my desk.

Would advise against buying this. Bought 2 of these in the past and both popped and stopped working immediately.

Lesson learnt and would hate to think on the off chance what it would do to my connected devices

    • +12

Got the same charger over a year now worked without any issues.

    • +5

Have the same one for 8+ months no issues with daily use at nearly always full load

    • +5

Same. Had the device connected to my laptop and after smelling burnt plastic, i realised the connector and port is melting … luckily on the charger side and not laptop. Not sure what would have happened if i didn't realise before going to sleep

    • Have been using one daily for the past 6 months with 0 issues.

    • +4

Each to their own, these days I’m happy to fork out extra for gear that have a reputation in Aus. E.g. Belkin chargers, MFI cables

Like I said earlier with 2-3k of connected equipment attached… not risking them for the sake of saving a few bucks.

FWIW I’ve had mixed experiences at best with “premium” china brands like Anker, Baseus, Ugreen etc hence my comments.

      • +2

IMO, "YMMV" wrt safety is not really something you'd want out of anything passing electricity.

      • I bought an Anker 65W Nano II charger few weeks ago. Took it out of the box, plugged it in and it blew up literally in my hand.

Left a black line on my finger, but luckily I didn't get hurt.

These premium Chinese brands definitely get overhyped.

I have been a pretty loyal customer for baseus for a while but my recent experience has been a mixed bag. Products are touch and go but their warranty department seems pretty decent

I bought a 65 w20000mah power bank from them and it was DOA . Contacted them and they sent me a replacement right away…second one was also DOA and i asked for a refund. they apologised and told me it was definitely a batch issue…

Bought this 65W charger and initially it worked well…2 weeks into my europe trip it starts to power cycle (charge on and off) my primary USB C port. However if i plug something into the second usb C port, it will cycle that and then proceed to charge my primary usb C port properly. I contacted them for an exchange but they told me they would only exchange it once more. I didn't want to take my chances that it would fail again so i asked for a refund.

I also bought a 100Watt 20000mah power bank and that has been fine so far.

In total 3/4 of the products that I have bought from them have not worked. I thought i had the worst luck, but it seems like everyone else is having a similar experience.

    • Mine heats up hotter than a frying pan

    • +1

      YMMV but beware:
I bought this very model last month. Used it for charging my MAC and iphone using the 2 USB C ports.
Every time I plugged or unplugged the charging cable for the phone, it triggers something and the Mac stops being charged one sec and back on straight away. Unfortunately, the Macbook is connected to 2 external displays so all these displays got turned out in that 1 second. (Even some software like Teams got disconnected too)
Recorded the issue and sent the video to Baseus Ebay. They advised me that it's a feature of these chargers.
However, overall is not great experience with a lot of delays and irresponsible replies.
Thus, I had to escalate to Ebay Support.

      • I wonder if you had the same issue I had. They told me it might cycle on and off a few times but that is not the case with me…mine cycle on and off indefinitely

        • yes exactly what they said and yes, it never stopped recycling lol

Been using this one for a bout a year and no issues

inb4 obligatory "plug is CN" (upside down AU as mentioned) and "uninsulated pins!!!11"

    No complaints from here though.

    • +4

From my experience the CN plug prongs are slightly thinner than AU. This may lead to the plugs falling out or being loose in the socket.

I had one set that would literally rattle in-socket, sit at an angle and fall out of the socket if tilted. AU prongs were just fine in the same socket.

After that I started being more careful with what plugs I got.

I guess YMMV but I'd rather not come back to an unintended bbq.

      • +2

The official standards are 1.6mm for Australia and 1.5mm for China. If the receptacle isn’t properly holding onto the plug because of a 0.1mm difference then I’d argue that’s a bad receptacle rather than a bad plug (assuming the plug is within the Chinese standard if not nvm) and that even if Australian plugs are being held well enough there could be in issue with the contact area if just another 0.1mm would let it simply fall out.

        • It could be that these plugs were particularly shit but with an AU plug I can pick the board up via the plug. With the CN ones involved… not so much.

        • +1

Maybe it’s a tolerance thing, but I’ve noticed the same thing across multiple different high end powet boards with various different cn plugs.

There’s more to it than the 0.1mm diff i thinks

          • +1

@SmoothCactus: I agree with discombobulated and SmoothCactus, I have also found that the majority of Chinese-standard non-insulated plugs fit very loosely into my standard Australian wall outlets and power boards, and slide out by accident quite easily if knocked or bumped. I don't know if my outlets and power boards would be considered high quality, but they are regular common Australian brands like Clipsal and Click. I think its more likely that the Chinese manufacturers aim for the bottom of the tolerance to save costs, so maybe theirs are really 1.2 or 1.3mm, instead of 1.5mm.

    • I've had mine for four months, works well.

It does have its quirks though, or at least mine does.

If I plug in a device to charge, all connected devices reset their charging down to 0w (I have the Toocki/Essager cables from AliExpress that have a little display to show charging rates) and then cycle back up to their correct wattage (I have a switch joycon dock that starts charging again for a few seconds for all connected controllers).

Mine also doesn't seem to do low power charging. Some devices like earbud cases won't charge USB C to USB C or even USB A to USB C. It also won't charge my Milwaukee jacket 12V batteries either. Have to charge these devices from USB ports on a power board I got from Woolies.

Aside from these quirks though, works well.

      • +2

Resetting is normal for pretty much all PD chargers - new device gets connected and everything connected renegotiates the power they get.

Haven't had issues on mine for low power devices…

        • Hmm, maybe I should query with them in case I've got a faulty unit.

      • Just wanted to say I’ve not had any issues with low power devices (earphones) on any of the ports

  • +4

I have 3 of them and they work like a treat! Would whole heartedly recommend them.

  • +2

I bought 1 a month ago and working well. Just that it restarts charging when a new device gets plugged in. I'm not sure if this is an issue or normal.

My power points have a centre switch so the cable blocks the operation of the switch. It's the only annoying thing about it.

    • +7

Pretty sure it’s a PD power renegotiation thing and is normal on many chargers.

Give this and the first link in the description a read. https://www.reddit.com/r/UsbCHardware/comments/tznkpz/gan_pd…

      • OK thanks. Might get another one.

      • +1

        Thanks good to know.

This infuriated me on a recent holiday as it was the only charger I took and had a GL.iNet travel router that disconnected every time I plugged/unplugged another device. Next time I'll take a Xiaomi slimline power board like I used to.

If the house burns down, insurance isn't going to cover it

      Lmao source?

        • +4

          That’s not how that works.

        • Specs > feelings

        • +1

          It’s the vibe.

      • +2

        Source: trust me brother.

    • Clearly stated: Input: AC 100-240V
Or maybe I didn’t know Australia has allowed or higher voltage than that? Lol.

      • +1

maybe you just don't have enough 'feeling'….

  • What did you do? Did you connect your iron and you hair dryer to it at the same time?

  • Have 2 of the 60w ones, solid so far.

  • +1

This is my only GAN charger for the past one year. Can't fault it.

  • Good brand, just got my 67w charger, working well.
    compatible with Samsung S23 Ultra.

  • I have the 67W one. Had a sparky friend change the plug end. Works ok except the pass through AC outlet is very tight - wouldn't recommend it if you use a lot of different devices on it.

    • +1

Like many things, I’ve noticed it loosens up very quickly with some use

  • Have the exact same one, it is hot during use, like very very very warm hot

    • Don't waste the precious energy. It can help you to keep your tea warm. You are welcome.

    • That seems like a GaN trademark at this point, I have other high output GaN chargers from name brands like Anker & Belkin and they all get pretty hot under load.

    • +1

Very normal for GaN chargers, they operate at higher efficiency but also have higher stable operating temperatures.

You might notice some don’t feel as hot but its mostly due to different chargers sizes acting as heat sinks.

      • If it gets hot it straight means it has poorer efficiency as more of the input goes away as heat instead of going to your devices.

  • If this came with a figure 8 replaceable plug, it would be very close to perfect. I have one setup as a permanent desk solution, wouldn't want to roll the dice on using them as a portable solution. I know the uninsulated plugs aren't functionally an issue, but they were sadly mandated due to a number of fatalities.

    • +1

Kovol on aliexpress sell one that meet all your requirements. It’s120w and pretty much the same dimensions

    • +2

      I think you'll want this -
      Ugreen 200w
Mine should arrive in the next week or two from China.
Also this appears to be properly grounded according to a review I saw. The Beasus' charging ports are not grounded (the AC outlets are), although the plug is 3 pin. It annoys me so much when I use a macbook with it.

      • Wow US$200, I'm sure it's great but this looks better value for $57?
UGREEN US Plug GaN 100W 65W Fast Charger
        https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004021846016.html

        • That has a US plug, not AU

        • Overseas pricing is a bit crazy for the 200w model indeed. They're priced much lower (around A$100) in China.
Like Pirateguybrush said the one you linked is US plug, therefore isn't grounded and its plug cannot be replaced. Better off buying the Baseus one from this deal.

      • Alibaba selling it for $309 (40% off from $515!). Did you buy it here or from Ugreen website?
        https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004408538493.html

        • Personally I use a package forwarding company located in Shanghai to buy stuff directly from Chinese websites like taobao.com and jd.com. I bought this adaptor from a 2nd hand platform called xianyu which is used by sellers to avoid minimum pirce set by the manufacturer and it cost me A$80.
I usually consolidate my stuff and ship them via sea in ~20kg packages which cost ~A$90 and take ~40 days to arrive. It's probably too much of a hassal for people who don't know Chinese to get into…

U$150 is acceptable if there are no other options? I guess they'll decrease the price eventually though.

          • @Heatherfield: Damn, I'd love to get like 3 of them. It's even just 100 aud from jd and allegedly ships internationally but my account is tied to global joybuy store which doesn't seem to exist any more and I can't open a new Chinese account without CN number for verification

            • @Save Medicare: Mine arrived earlier this week, been really good so far. I'll probably buy another 1 or 2. I used jd's international shipping back in 2017 when gst wasn't even required, they partnered with couriers please at the time and shipping took forever. Not sure how much they have improved since then. If you can read Chinese, taobao does allow you to register with an aussie mobile number and it has an official package forwarding service.

      • It comes down to US$150 with code AL200W (free shipping)

The 3-pin plug is reversed, the wire is facing the wrong way.

    • Not sure why neg'd.

Probably by a disorientated user. :D

Thanks. Not great for some laptops, incl. macbooks bigger than 13"

    • +2

      This is for 65w.

      100w is different.

  • Just FYI, I believe (and I may be wrong) that this product is not allowed to be sold or used in Australia due to the missing insulation on the live and neutral pins on the plug.

Edit: Seems I might be late to the party.

    • You know.. i was going to return my unit due to this but then j realised almost every single one of the generic wall plug adaptor I'm using also doesn't have insulated pins .. i guess i need to remove all of them too

  • What are the plug receptors (female side) that look like standard 240v on this thing? Are they just for stowing the cable easily? Is it a spike protected 240v pass-through?

    • They are power pass through outlets. They will pass through the voltage of the supply you have plugged the unit into.

No mention of any surge protection on the box or in the manual. The outlets will accept AU/CN plugs, plus non-grounded US plugs.

  • FYI Baseus hardwire their AC power leads. For many that will be a non-issue. Sadly for me it is. Hard pass.

Fortunately, most other manufacturers of comparable chargers still use the Universal "figure 8" socket.

  • bought it few months ago and working well with my Dell/Lenovo notebook with Type C power so far.

  • Anyone notices that you can feel the 'static' electricity with tingling feeling when you touch the aluminum back or front keyboard panel of the laptop when the 100W charger is plugged in to charge the laptop? Is it that the grounding pin of the plug is not actually functioning?

    • The usb ports are not grounded, but the ac outlets are. You may find the discussions above helpful.
In fact, it's pretty difficult to find a charger that is actually properly grounded. The easiest way to use an apple adapter like this + apple extension cable.
