What kind of education needs these specs?

    • +8

Grade schoolers with rich arse parents???

Serious answer. What about those studying graphics design, game development, multimedia.

I got a decent laptop for school, but I found that usually if you’re doing anything your phone can’t do in class, the chances are school will have the equipment for you. So now I take iPad +Magic Keyboard with me and built a pc to use at home. It’s probably cheaper than a good gaming laptop and you get a lot more value.

gaming+laptop, just makes no sense at all.

    • +5

You want to game but you want some reassemble of portability.

      • +1

with 2.8 kg laptop + 1.2 kg power adapter = 4kg total weight

And how much a computer tower + screen weigh. Then ofcourse your keyboard and mouse.

Though i like to see someone try bring the computer tower and screen and try to game on the train then.

Im sure some trains got those power outlets.

          • +1

@xoom: pretty sure haven't seen anyone gaming on the train with a 17 inch 3 kg laptop.

not bad for a traveller / digital nomad

      • The 13700HX has as max TDP of 157W. Good luck with the laptop lasting 5 mins, without it being plugged in whilst doing any significant workloads. If it has the same issue as 12th gen HX laptops, it's going to throttle very quickly because the cooling systems can't manage the heat they generate.

Also with the amount of heat it generates and how much it weighs, you aren't going to have this on your lap for very long.

        • Perfect for the coming winter yeah? 🙃

        • It's also a HP, so you can bump that heat up another notch, just because.
Burnt by HP once before (literally), never again.

  • OMEN, not sure I would want a bad omen.

    • +2

      Bad means good when gaming

      • +2

Im very bad at computer games. That must make me a great gamer. 🤪

Where was this when i was in school!!?? When i finished school, they were just getting dial-up. The school librarian used to bring out the 'elcyclopedia brottanica' (or whatever it was) on a disk, carried by a special cart with padlocks on it! Lmao boy time has flown and tech certainly changed!
But as stated above, what kid needs this!? Maybe someone in uni doing game programing but far out…..

    • Like i said. Grade schoolers. None of them need this.

But those going to uni doing graphics design, multimedia studies and game development them people are "students" too.

LOL.. you had computers at school? Posh…. lol

      • We had apple II. But that was like decades ago. So showing my age. LOL.

        • Admin had a TRS80 model 1 level 2…. it looked impressive, but dont think anyone knew what to do with it lol

          • @pharkurnell: I was but a wee lad when that was released. LOL.

  • Good luck in buying OMEN, AMEN

Insanely good value, shame I'm not eligible otherwise I would snap it up. Even at full price ($4843) it's very tempting. By a long shot the cheapest 4090 and even cheaper than all 17/18 inch 4080s with the exception of the gigabyte with much lower specs. That said, what sort of crazy sadist makes a 17 inch laptop without a numpad.

  • This, or this?
    Lenovo Legion Pro 7i (16", Gen 8) WQXGA 240HZ 13900HX RTX 4080 32GB DDR5 1TB NVMe SSD Laptop $3619 Delivered @ Lenovo Education

Some talk seeing cpu throttling in 1 game with this. Heat getting up there…

    https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/comments/11m5uh0/the_…

    • No more $3619 now, the lowest Legion with 4080 is $4200. So 600 cheaper and 4090>4080, I will definitely go Omen.

      • Agree after looking at specs in detail
Lenovo has a number over Hp on: larger battery (99.9 cf 87, allegedly 8.5 vs 6.5 hours), better screen (500 vs 385 nits, WXGA VS Qhd, hdr400, etc), i9-13900hx vs i7-13700hx, lighter, faster Ram (5600 vs 4800), 1080 cam vs 720, but nfi why the HP misses on a numpad!
but the the HP trumps over the Lenovo by rt 4090 vs rtx4080, optical mech keys, 17.3" vs 16", card reader vs none, bluetooth5.3 vs 5.1. Didn't go though a port analysis.
Believe that Omen gaming hub is getting access to GeForce Now if that's of interest.

HP chat support have said no MUX! Thats also a miss!

Both run 32Gb, 1tb ssd, win 11 home. And HP is about $600 less, and more with cashrewards

Lenovo has extensive custom configs for delivery in <3weeks, hp have none with delivery in <3 days.

        • I cannot believe Omen doesn't have MUX, might be a mistake by support. Will check after receiving it.

          • @asuka1204: Support said no.
A youtube review says advanced optimus, but can't remember mention of Mux on software. Certainly no hardware switch.
On the other hand, under voltage was abled in software and improved performance considerably.

            • @randomchecker: Only i7 option available. USA has i9 versions and multiple configs, but not through this deal.
They did choose the best spec screen here.
Card reader speeed was meh (90mb/s) and ssd was a pyrite ? brand, but samsung ram

Only 3 cooling chambers although they were described as "fatties" and did surprisingly well…perforned close to scar GT77 for fps on games, but i9 in multi core optimised games indicated a little cpu throttling here. At120FPS Vs 130FPS, your not going to tell…
              Still will buy!

        • I dont have immediate proof, but i can tell you for certain the 17' omen have a mux switch. happy to offer my head to you if it somehow doesnt

    • Cashback not available via student/uni store - or is that different to the "Education" store?

      • Cashback is ineligible on purchases made via the HP EPP, CEPP, BYOD or Student (UNI) store.

        you are coorect good Sir

  • During sign up both the Terms and conditions and Privacy Policy links take me to the Educational Store home page. At the same time they want my mobile phone number. Not impressed so far.

  • Thanks heaps OP. Bought one, been looking for gaming laptop to replace the pc.

  • Anyone know what size capacity the 2nd SSD slot takes?

The HP manual relates to 11th processor, older chipset and rtx3000 series..and that 1TB is a shared MAX between the 2 slots, with the 2nd slot being gen3 cf gen 4 in the 1st slot.

Maybe just go with an ext. Ssd??

    • There isn't a limit to the SSD. You could put 4tb

  • Seems to be sold out right now.
