  • Any decent gift card deals kicking about applicable to OW?

    • +4

Maybe get the JB Hifi ones and get them to price match and then use the gift cards

        Good idea, thanks!

I've just successfully price matched with JB, no hassles. I can get 4% off JB eGift cards through my Private Health and I'll use the $10 perks sign up coupon aswell.

Tcn gift card is available with flybuys bonus. Not much difference but JB hi-fi is always close to Coles…

got two of these from JB for $99 each, works great for games, no loading issues what so ever

  • Thanks, ordered from JB HIFI

  • Comparing to Samsung SSD, which one has better quality or pretty much the same? Thanks

    • +2

If you're referring to the Samsung T7 (or rugged equivalent) they have a higher maximum transfer speed of 1050MB/s vs. the Sandisk's 520MB/s.

      Comparable warranty.

      • Thanks. I was referring to T7 which I saw has really good review.

        • +1

T7 uses NVMe based SSD. This one is SATA based. Sustained write on this would be subpar. However, if you want good sustained write, get T7 Shield. The difference isn't just the outside.

This has been this price for a few weeks now at Officeworks. Amazon now have them at $100

    • +1

I only see the 480gb version for $100 on amazon

      • +1

Sorry, my mistake, that may have been for the 480GB version but link seems to have gone now anyway. Best value faster external SSD appears to now be the Samsung Portable SSD T7, 1TB for $137.90 on Amazon

  • this has been at 89 dollars for a very long time now nothing special

yep got one of these for my model 3 it works great with sentry mode and dash cam mode love it!!

    • Ah nice, would the more expensive rufged one handle car temps better?

      • seems to be fine but depends if the cars out in the sun or not I guess the temps would go up on it but so far its working fine.

I’ve purchased this a few weeks ago and the performance is rubbish. Approx 200MB/s continuous write / 320MB/s read. Tried NTFS and ExFat, different block sizes with the same results.

I recommend to spend a few dollars more and choose an SSD that’s nvme based instead of sata. Basically any SSD that says 10G USB-C is nvme based.

The advertised 520MB/s read speed is the theoretical speed of USB 3.2 Gen1 @ 5 Gbit/s.

    • looks like it is NVMe based. Benchmarked with front USB 3 port and speeds are ok

      Benchmark

I think your benchmarks are misleading because your sample size of 1GB is too small and won't even fill the cache.
Try bigger writes like 16GB and you can see how it slows down to 211MB/s. The first 1G is fast, afterwards the SSD struggles to flush the cache.

Tested on two machines with AJA System Test (real world test), both tested with USB 3.2 Type A and USB-C ports. Same result on both.

        AJA System Test: https://imgbb.com/
AJA System Test write speed graph: https://imgbb.com/

        • I tested with AJA with 16 GB file and getting constant ~430 MB/s (I only has normal USB 3 ports @ 5 Gbps) : AJA System Test write speed graph 16 GB. I couldn't open your links as they redirects to imgbb main site.

I also tested with 64 GB file with AJA and got similar results. I think it saturates the USB port anyway. AJA System Test write speed graph 64 GB

May be they have changed the actual NVMe drive in some drives. So that we got two different drives inside. Can you check drive details from CrystalDiskInfo. Same thing happened with SN550 drives. I have two drives with different performance graphs.

I think your benchmarks are misleading because your sample size of 1GB is too small and won't even fill the cache.

That is understandable. Looks like this has a WD SN350QE NVMe drive, I think it even happens with WD SN550 after filling the cache in newer drives (not ~200 but around ~500-600). Even then I think this NVMe to USB controller limits speeds ~500. May be we can shuck this drive and swap it to an Orico NVMe - USB enclosure supports 10 Gbps port and check the speeds.

Couldn't find data on SN350QE specifically but found SN350

          It is $89 at PCCG

@bazingaa: Thank you for sending through your benchmarks. It seems Ozbargain trimmed my links from imgbb.com.

You definitely have a different drive inside your enclosure than the one I have.

Mine comes up in CrystalDiskInfo as "SanDisk Portable SSD 1000.2 GB" with an interface "UASP (Serial ATA)" and not NVME. Could it be that yours is the Sandisk Extreme for $199 (the one with the hole) and not the E30?

            • @ictsol: Yeah, looks like you have a SATA version while I have a NVMe drive.
I have a E30 (there is no hole) which I bought from JBHIFI (https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/sandisk-e30-portable-ssd-…) by price matching with this deal.

              • @bazingaa: That’s pretty disappointing that there are two versions out there, a good and the bad one. Of course I purchased the crappy one.

I bought mine from Officeworks Oxley QLD for those who wondered.
