Also want to add in that this is the crème de la crème when it comes to Gen 3 drives.
970 Pro disagrees
good stuff, 970 lineup be juicy unlike 980/990
Shame there's no 970 pro above 1tb
Do these ones have the weird issue that needed a firmware upgrade? Or was that just the next model up?
Edit: I skimmed over this a little while ago and made me hesitant to buy Samsung drives. Not sure how credible it is, but made me second guess the reliability https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34648149
Yeah I own 970 Evo Plus 2TB and now I'm getting nervous after reading that :)
Fairly sure that's just the 980 Pro 2TB and maybe a newer model (990?)
They are talking about 970 Evo as well…
I have 3x Samsung 970 Evo Plus drives and a 990 Pro 2TB and they're all fine (all locally purchased). Even the oldest drive is still at 100% health with moderate use.
Seems like most reports of issues are from the US etc. Wonder if there's a difference between US and AUS variants of these drives.Read the article. Health rating is not relevant.
Health (i.e. endurance/percentage used) is relevant. Can you please elaborate on why you think otherwise?
Also just checked the 0E & 03 attributes on all my 970 Evo Plus drives and they're fine, all zeros for 0E and 64 for 03.

0E 000000000000 Media and Data Integrity Errors@fastnet: The failures being discussed happen without warning (iirc) because they're not endurance based failures.
As i understand the problem can develop before smart 0E shows it, or some unknown kind of activity can trigger 0E to go mental.

Caveat that I'm not following this closely as my nvme is gigabyte.
@justtoreply: Good to know about the no warning failures, thanks. This is however being discussed in an entirely different article that was not originally referenced.
Interesting point. My 980 pro that failed was a US import. I have an older 980 pro on even older firmware that was purchased from australia and it has had 0 issues
Samsung SSDs have 5 year warranty according to their website.
And Amazon customer Q & A's says:"Question:
Does this have warranty in Australia?
Answer:
This product has warranty in Australia.
By Austin Computers Australia Seller on 25 August 2020"Or am I missing something?
(Honest question)Samsung will refuse warranty support on any drive sent from amazon us/uk even if purchased through Amazon Aus. No amount of back/forth with support will change that. They dont care that it is a widespread manufacturing defect that is entirely their fault. They do not have international warranty like EVGA.
It looks as though Amazon will refund my 1.5yr old failed 980 pro though thankfully. Will know for sure when they receive the drive in a week or soThanks for replying. That's really helpful.
@swalloweda: I will try to remember to keep updating as I get news from Amazon. One thing that is promising is that in another forum post on here someone who was in the same boat as me received a refund from Amazon for their dead Samsung SSD that was a similar age as mine, so at least it would seem that Amazon are looking after their customers.
I have a 500 GB version of this since last 3+ years and no issues.
Is this better than the SN770 because of DRAM? Or is the SN770 better?
It's the new batches. 990Pro, 980Pro, 970EP all have reported the 0E issue.
Ah OK! Didnt know even the 970 was fked.
god I thought it was only 980/990. I better check my 970s firmware
SN770 is more expensive, no DRAM or built in hardware encryption and will not have any speed benefit if being used on a gen 3 motherboard instead of gen 4 motherboard as it will be working in back compatible mode operating at gen 3 speeds. Finding out whether your motherboard is gen 3 or gen 4 compatible will determine what is more right for your situation.
Thanks. SN770 is cheaper. 198 on amazon via US. It really dosent matter if its gen 3 or 4 for a gen 3 motherboard. If its gen 4 and work at gen 3 speeds it will still saturate the gen3 io and will still be faster than gen 3 drives on gen 3 motherboard. Gen 4 drives will also pick up speed once user moves over to the newer motherboard in the future.
What I was wondering is if there was any other difference that made this drive better than SN770 as thats cheaper by 20 bux.

Don't go chasing waterfalls, man.
Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to

Misheard lyrics.
As an UK import, would it mean it needs to be shipped back to UK in case of warranty?
Contact Amazon AU first. If they are willing to take care of it, that would be best.
If you go through Samsung, Samsung AU won't touch it.
Be aware that parralel imports aren't covered by a local warranty according to OzBargain users.
But what about parallel imports?
I apologise. I am from a parralel dimension where everything is exactly the same except the spelling of your parallel.
But cheaper. Thats Ozb stamp of approval right there.
Considering the quantity of posts about Samsung reliability lately and needing firmware updates (no, not just the 990, saw a guy whining on reddit about buying a heap of 970s and multiple dying) - nah I'm good.
Waiting for P5 or SN850X 2TB.
SN850X needs a firmware upgrade too. Not sure whether WD released it or not.
P5 Plus is a reasonable choice (if the price is great). P5, I am cynical about it because I've heard some bad things about P5 (non-Plus).
Anyone getting 970 Evo Plus, remember to upgrade to the latest firmware. It is possible the version you receive will already be on a new enough firmware version, but check and update to be safe.
Oh interesting, didn't know there was 2. I'll do a read up. Thanks
One review I saw mentioned P5 has cold data problem (and it came last in the test - i.e. it failed first in that test). The same reviewer started doing another round of test and P5 Plus seems a lot better.
However, with all SSDs, upgrade the firmware. Zero of the SSD makers currently has perfect firmware track record. Crucial also had issues.
@netsurfer: I think I will grab a 2TB SN850X and a 4TB P5 Plus in the coming weeks (waiting to see if i get a refund for my dead 980pro). I will make sure to check for firmware updates for both the new drives. I had honestly never even thought to update SSD firmware before all these issues with the samsung drive, but if anything, at least I have learned not to be complacent with any hardware in the future.
2TB WD SN850x is currently $244 on Amazon.
Samsung Official Specs nVme 970 EVO Plus is MLC, not TLC (correct me if i'm wrong)
It's a marketing gimmick.
The official specs for 970 EVO Plus NAND is
Samsung V-NAND 3-bit MLC
You have to understand MLC stands for Multi-Level Cell, so, 3-bit MLC means TLC (Triple-Level Cell).
If you're looking for 2-bit MLC SSD, it's going to be Samsung 970 Pro.
Not a great choice considering this other option is barely more expensive and is a gen 4 v2 drive (sn850x) for 244, 2TB https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/761160
Just remember to update the firmware on this in Western Digital Dashboard before using regularly, it can cause random BSOD or not wake from sleep with Windows 11 and the new firmware only came out about 2-3 weeks ago.
Note that this is a gen 3 drive
Still, its a very fast drive for most PC users
