Plumber Service Fee to Reinstall Toilet

Hi fellow OzBargainers

I received a quote to have toilet reinstalled following it being removed to fix a broken pipe behind the wall. The quote given was $650 which I felt was a bit extreme considering everything is there. Just wanted to see if anyone had that done and whether I’m missing something that is more involved?

Thanks!

    1. As general rule of thumb, get 2 quotes

    2. How much do you think is a fair price?

Price is fair for the trip, hassle factor and a bit of allowance for unknowns, such as problems bolting the unit down, deteriorated seals, out of spec existing plumping and the like.

If you shop around though you might find someone willing to work without a contingency built into the price.

Or you might have trouble finding someone else interested. In my experience most plumbers hate doing one-off residential piece-work. There's plenty enough work in commercial and new residential building projects to keep most of them employed as it is.

I had this done recently…plumber installed new silver (wall to toilet) tap and pipe that he supplied. All other fittings were supplied by me. Under $200 easily :) …I can't remember exactly, but I was amazed how cheap it was. Depends where you are and who you get I suppose.

Plumbers always charge a lot, especially fixing a toilet/bathroom. Because who knows/wants to do it themselves?
It could be a fairly big job, but without knowing the details hard to know?

But most likely they have factored in half a day + materials (probably max $50). So could take 20 minutes - could take 4 hours?
    They probably don't even know….
But still doesn't mean they can't squeeze in another job if it's quick - but most wouldn't.

Remember they do have to drive to your house too.

But admittedly, 20-120 minutes + bit of plastic pipe @ $650 (they might also try to charge gst too)
They could be making $1000+ a day, so they certainly not going hungry!

I recently had my toilet reinstalled after re-tile (all pipes + connections still in place) for $150 but your job might be different?

    • Thanks for sharing your exp, it’s the same company that came to locate and fix burst pipe behind toilet. As part of that they removed the toilet to get access behind the wall. Do you mind pm me the guys you had to have that done? I’m in Vic.

      • Without knowing all the details hard to know exactly.

Is it a bigger company? I would generally avoid a big company as they will generally charge more due to reputation and overheads.

Again, without knowing all the details hard to know exactly.
But it doesn't seem efficient or cost effective to remove toilet, repair pipe.

Then come back and reinstall - and get charged $650 for just the reinstall. Especially so if it's all through the same company. If they had to come back a few days later to let silicone dry and/or they too busy that's fair.
But to return to basically finish the same job and you're charged again - doesn't seem right at all. But I could be wrong?

        • They couldn’t put the toilet back cause I need to find someone else to replace the tile the plumber cut out to access the pipe. Complicated.

  • First reaction is it sounds a little high, but not ridiculously so. Definitely get a couple of more quotes, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was around this mark.

You got a cheap quote right there 😷

For $650, I'd expect a new toilet to be supplied?

$650 just for re-installation is very high IMO

Then again, I've installed my own toilet. It's a piece of piss if the outlet lines up with the waste pipe.

I'll tell them to bugger off, they should have installed it when they fixed the pipe saving you separate call out charges, it should take less than 30mins.

  • Got a picture? Do they have to redo the tiles and run new pipework?

  • +4

    It sounds high.
Unless they are providing a new toilet and new plumbing, and not just reinstalling.

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/services/in-home/toilet-installa…

    • isn't that thru hi-pages contractors?

      • no idea, but bunnings manages it.

    • Good find!

    • Thank you so much, didn’t know about that service. Now I have a true cost to compare to.

  • Didn't Bunnings have a deal where if you buy a toilet from them, they installed it for $120 or something like that?

    • Aldi used to do a similar deal in the past, haven't seen it for a while though.

Sounds like metro plumbing quoting the job.

So they removed your toilet to fix the pipe and left the toilet out and want to charge you an additional fee to reinstall it. These people have some balls.

    • +3

      Yeah sounds shit (pun intended).
It should have been possible to repair it, reinstall it. And then a tiler could have come after and cut the new tile around the toilet.
Hard to know without all the details.
But I think they just deliberately making it more complicated to bleed some extra cash from you and claim it's "very complicated, must be done like x".
