Hhmmm virgin price now excludes checked baggage?

    • for their lite fares they always have.

    • +9

i have checked the suppliers, and it looks like the fares coming up are all "Choice" which include a 23kg bag. I have updated the description to show that checked luggage is included.

  • What the charge for luggage?

  • +20

    On a 737 too… no thanks.

    • why? Just curious as someone looking at flights.

      • +2

It's a narrowbody plane, so very cramped for long haul. 1-3hours is fine, but anything over that gets uncomfortable.

        • +3

Oh damn, as someone who is both tall and fat, that sounds terrible haha

          • +4

@dingleberries: You got 8 months to lose some weight lol

            • +5

@Circly: With the hungry jacks, KFC, Dominos deals here. Gonna be a struggle.

            • @Circly: I'm not planning to go until Nov next year but thanks for the motivation haha

        • otoh as Jetstar had Japan sale as well, do you know whether their 787s have a longer pitch than Virgin's 737?

          • @inamberclad: From what I could see Jetstar were also flying via Cairns but on their A320, so not too different from a 737

            • @ozb88: Bummer
I must've selected a random flight which had 787. All good
I think this guy mentions the pitch

            • @ozb88: Jetstar flies Cairns to Japan in the 787 for now. It may be that in the future when the a321XLR comes on board they swap over but that will be a while yet.

              • @wackedupwacko: They are already swapping them over from a few months down the road as their A321 Neo's are arriving. I can see they have already replaced the flights to Cairns from September that are usually done on the B787 from Melbourne with them which sucks because I enjoyed flying their Business Class on both flights.

                • +1

@Cyphar: I imagine it'll be like DPS where during "offpeak" or KIX they use 321NEO but at peak they'll go full 787 as they need the capacity.

                • @Cyphar: Using their 787 on that Cairns to Melbourne of the flight wouldnt have been that profitable for them every time I've done it it was basically a half full plane. I can imagine they want to just keep their 787's doing the long haul portion of their flights.

    • There are 3 toilets on a 737, for ~128 seats (737-700) or ~176 seats (737-800).

30" seat pitch (ouch) as well.

There is no way you can travel to Japan with carry on luggage only especially towards winter (lots of clothing needed)

Not to mention the return trip you will need lots of space for all those snacks, gaming stuff, Anime/manga, figurines, kawaii plushies , ramen and Tokyo Banana !

    • +1

I have, and will again in October (not on this deal)

    • +5

You only need one set of warm clothes and you can wear that on the plane and take it off once you sit down.

    • +1

And of course the cheap alcohol for those so inclined

    • Post back?

    • +4

Have fun lugging your 30kg suitcase down busy streets

      • 30kg is nothing unless you're weak sauce.

    • +5

I did Japan mid December with carry on only. I've done 6 week trips in winter with carry on only. It is absolutely doable and Japan is probably the best place to do it because most accommodations include washer/dryer.

I can imagine if you're into skiing/snowboarding and like bringing your own gear, it might be marginally more challenging!

    • +1

I buy puffer jacket, a beanie / scarfs + good gloves at a thrift store. There are plenty of recycle/ thrift stores and some items are absolute bargains with name brands. Take wool long johns/ under shirt x 2 from OZ.
On leaving drop them back or post them. They have Japan post and 1kg is about 360 yen SAL(snail mail)…ooops !!! just checked
Update : no SAL, no cheap, no more ..https://www.j-subculture.com/guides/sub/810
      bummer !

    • Done it many times on Jetstar to Japan.

  • Virgin could be worse than Jetstar to Tokyo. Both have a stop in Queensland and while Virgin flies to Haneda instead of Narita, it's on a 737 MAX compared to a Dreamliner. That's assuming Jetstar gets their Dreamliner into the air…

    • what's the diff between 737 max and dreamliner?

      • +8

        One is full of dreams

        • +5

The other one, 737, is only filled with a couple of the tiniest toilets.

Remember only coffee, tea and water on Virgin. No meals for such a long flight, make virgin too similar to Jetstar but the price differential is much greater.

          • @Pcoder: No meals on such a long flight?

            • +1

@Circly: Yeah, no food and as I've said for Haneda vs Narita your only saving at best any hour of travel and maybe at most $50 extra in return train travel. Haneda is only really handy for domestic connections and even that is less important as Narita still connects to major centre like Osaka, Fukuoka and Sapporo much better now.

The problem with this deal is they are offering LCC service to close to full service prices.

      • +6

the 787 is a much newer designed TWIN AISLE jet, serving a 3-3-3 seating configuration for economy. The seats themselves have a 30 inches pitch and 17 inch width.. shock to nobody, this is decent for budget airline standards but poor for what the norm is for 787s (ex: Qantas 787 having 32 inch pitch and 17.2inch width)

Virgin Aus currently use their SINGLE AISLE 737-800 to Japan, as their MAX orders are yet to be fulfilled (and won't until ~June i think?) however their 737-800 offer the same seating designs (30 pitch and 17 width) and im unsure what the MAX will offer. worth noting that the entirety of the 737 fleet always has and will be single aisle.

the 787 is much better for a long distance traveler. cabin is able to pressurize at a lower altitude and in doing so aids in jet lag and overall post-flight "glugginess" (if that's a term). It also has Screens for the passengers, while the virgin offering does NOT. the 787 also has 2 AC power outlets per 3 seats (positioned usually below the armrest)

        • +2

Damn - I am going to book a flight for start of next year to Tokyo. I've been twice on the Dreamliner, but figured Virgin would be better as they are domestically.
Thanks for the heads up - I'll stick with Jetstar.

          • @theguyrules: alternatively, if you are SYD based, SYD-HND w/ ANA is probably a good option if you want to stay with the VA family. or JAL.

            • @TexasVujicic: We're Bris - so going via Cairns it seems. No more Jetstar OOL->NRT direct which is what we used to do.

Or maybe there are? And I just missed it- hmm

        • How's Singapore Airlines to Japan rate compared to these. I assume much better?

          • +2

@Circly: Singapore air return in September is $950 Aud return. Its insanely cheap given current climates.

        • VA currently does not fly to HND. This routes launch is contingent on them receiving their MAX planes. 737-800 does not have anywhere near the range to fly to Japan. This route can only be done on max and will be one of the top 5 routes distance wise for the MAX

    • +1

yeah I am a Virgin fan through and through but the idea of being on a 737 for that long makes me sweat. Even to bali it was pure chaos.. Long lines for the two toilets, bare minimum/same as domestic F&B service and just overall super squashy seats. It would take a lot for me to want to go on that for that long again!

  • +7

I dont care that its a MAX but from $199-$599 deal return with Jetstar. Even if you get a Max Bundle which would be cheaper than these VA offerings - food, bags, any seat, QFF points and status credits and having a flexible and cancellable fare, the overall advantage of having a widebdy 787 a far better proposal.

For 166 passengers in Y you get 2 really small lavatories on Virgin.
For 314 passengers in Y you get 8 normal sized bathrooms on Jetstar.

On a route like this, if the flight is full - there is a possibility that bags will not be allowed to go as it would impact the range of the MAX. This is the same ordeal as with Qantas on their MEL/SYD-DPS routes during peak season on the 737-800.

    • Isn't there a toilet at the front on the 737 MAX too? Or is that just for Business Class?

      • +1

        Just for Business.

        • +2

Yeah I think Virgin need to improve their offer. As the flight is over 5 hours and they don't consider themselves a full LCC, they should at least have some sort of meal/snack service.

The next thing they need to do is at least consider leasing a widebody plane for the route as I wouldn't be surprised as you mentioned that they hit an issue with range.

        • +1

Oh dear! I was on a Jetstar A321neo from Bali with 3 toilets and those had big queues. My flight on the Virgin 737 MAX in October is going to be interesting then (I had to use my Virgin credits).

        • either VA are completely stupid, or they had their A330 leasing options fall through and had to come up with some plan to keep their spot at Tokyo.

i'd hope they can sort out a twin aisle jet sometime soon, and are able to move the MAX to either a coast to coast option or a MEL-SYD spec. but thats probably just wishful thinking

          • +1

@TexasVujicic: Virgin wont be getting widebodies until they can fully recover. They have no plans for widebodies and looking at currently 737-10 MAXs, they will leave the International Australian Based Airlines to QF. A shame, their B77Ws with their 3-3-3 config - the best way to cross the pacific.

            • +1

@AircraftFreight: my expectation is that the widebodies would come once their IPO listing has been organised and settled. but that wont be for some time.

              • +1

@TexasVujicic: Probably a B789. And I doubt we'd see them running on transcons, only International services to LAX, HKG, HND and maybe to LHR…maybe.
They dont have enough real estate (widebody gates) at Melbourne (2 at the cost of 5 narrowbody gates) Sydney (3) and at Brisbane (1)

                • @AircraftFreight: i don't really foresee them going to LAX anytime soon with their UNITED codeshare already covering SYD, MEL. i just see the gap with some SEAsia and still Japan with MEL (ana only serve SYD from memory)

                  • @TexasVujicic: VA still flew from SYD-LAX with Delta codeshares on the same route. They also flew from SYD-AUH-LHR (VA 29 and VA30), where as they also had codeshares with Etihad.

                    • @AircraftFreight: Sure, and i have no doubts they envision doing it again in the future, but it would definitely be lower on their priority list and helps keep them in UA's good books.

            • +2

@AircraftFreight: Think a lot of the depends on whether it's private equity is looking to offload it soon as they might want to turn a quick profit.

One of the reasons why they might not be looking to lease one widebody is that in offloading the airlines, it's always best to keep the balance sheet light from too many capital expenses. If the private equity does instead decide to keep the airline for a period, then we might see them reconsider as I wouldn't be surprised if using the 737 is an operational issue as the plane won't be specifically setup for distance flying and it will probably have issues relating to weight and crew requirements.

          • +1

@TexasVujicic: The reason they are going with the 737Max is because the rest of the fleet is 737's and its cheaper to repair/maintain if your fleet is only one type of aircraft. Cost cutting at its finest.

Definitely anything over 5 hours should be twin aisle though IMHO

            • +1

@soupfluencer: Yes, i know this, and this has been the plan to showcase "hey look at these lower maintenance costs!" prior to their sell-off.

Borderline semi-RyanAir moves (they run pure 737 equipment also)

I just don't foresee them running it like this forever.

        • +2

wear a 3 piece suit and a copy of the Financial Review under your arm and you should be able to sneak in

  • +2

Bugger. I'd been waiting for a Virgin deal but after reading these comments this doesn't seem like a deal at all..

    • Go with Jetstar. If it gets cancelled they will probably will rebook you with Qantas. (Give them a call) and there's a return for free sale right now from $199.

      • +2

        So I see…

But it's that "probably" that worries me.

        • +1

Look, if Virgin cancels on you - you have nothing to fall back on.
Jetstar has a International Cancellation (B788) rate of 1.9%. And if they do cancel on you - and if you are on a Max bundle, they will rebook you on Qantas.

          • @AircraftFreight: Thanks, I appreciate that info.

But do I have to go Max to cover my arse if cancelled? 100s of bucks difference.

            • +1

@Selenium: Good travel insurance should cover it. With Jetstar International, I will always go with Max. Makes things a lot easier.

              • @AircraftFreight: Would they rebook for the same day or whenever they feel like it? (Sorry for all the questions, I've only ever flown cheapest of the cheap. And in "the before times".

                • +3

@Selenium: When I was cancelled on Jetstar, called up the line and asked to be put onto a QF flight the next day. (JQ7 MEL-SIN) and they changed it to QF35 the next day, got a PNR in 45 minutes from Q-ticketing.

  • What are the odds of flights to China this year returning to precovid prices?

  • +2

Well, Jetstar's current Return for Free deal seems much better…

    https://www.jetstar.com/au/en/deals/japan-return-for-free?de…

  • +3

Booked 2 pax Cairns <> Tokyo for $877 total yesterday in the Jetstar sale.

Including 25kg luggage and standard seat selection for both people.

Ther was a $49 club Jetstar discount so call it $926 to be fair. Crazy cheap for 2 people.

    Dates were mid October.

Not much of a deal from Virgin.

Jetstar customer service is crap but I would rather do the trip on a 787 anyday.

In saying that I would pay the extra $50 to fly domestic with Virgin over Jetstar every time.

  • +2

    not on a 737-max.

  • +1

Jetstar pricing from yesterday was great, this is expensive.

    • +2

Looks like from your profile that you might be able to only go on JQ, Qantas, ANA or JAL in Business Class.

  • +1

    What about bloody perf?

    • Skip the nonsense/layover and fly direct Perth to Tokyo on ANA All Nippon Airways

  • I'll wait for JAL deals - heard they have better planes?

    • +1

They are among the best airlines in the world but you pay for it. Even with a sale expect $1300-$1400 in the current environment. ANAs sale is only 1380 return.

As for when, I'd shake the crystal ball and guess they'll do a sale when they add more capacity in Aus (maybe 2nd SYD HND daily service).

  • +1

Just fly Japan Airlines. Whats the price diff

    • Nonstop JAL in october is $1700

Fare 1: Carrier JL QNN739DE SYD to TYO (rules)
Passenger type ADT, ROUND-TRIP fare, booking code Q
      Covers SYD-HND (Economy)
      $585.00

Fare 2: Carrier JL LNN739DE TYO to SYD (rules)
Passenger type ADT, ROUND-TRIP fare, booking code L
      Covers HND-SYD (Economy)
      $935.00

      • but are the planes better than Virgin Australia? ;-)

  • Tokyo in Nov-Dec ? - cool. Sounds like winter - too cool 4 me dude.

I just came back from mid-winter in East Asia - nasty cold no thank you won't be doing that again.

    • +1

      I'm the other way.
Winter in Japan means epic powder snow.

Shame these fares are not for Jan-march

      But Japan is wonderful regardless

  • +1

thank you so much OP! Originally was looking at the Virgin ones but then went down a Jetstar rabbit hole and booked myself and my mate a Melb to Osaka ticket for $422 each (return) for December!

Edit - this was about 11am this morning so unsure if available now

  • +2

737 on an international flight ? Yuck

  • For those looking for accommodation — especially with children! — especially with children who love dinosaurs and robots!! — I thought this was a great deal (especially with a free shuttle to Disney at the door!).
