Samsung B450 300W 2.1ch Soundbar & Wireless Subwoofer $149.99 @ Costco (Membership Required)

470

Morning everyone,

I've never had a Soundbar and I really liked Silvion's deal for this at JB for $174. I checked Costco and luckily found it for $149.99. I bought this at Marsden Park (plenty of stock when I was there last night) but I would expect this price to be nationwide as well. It is available for $189.99 delivered at Costco online but I think the in-store price is definitely the real deal here. Costco also has a 90 days change of mind return policy for electronics just in case.

Description: Add amazing sound to your TV with the 2.1-channel Soundbar B450. Surround Sound Expansion lets you experience great 3D effects, the included wireless subwoofer delivers Powerful Bass, and whether it's sport, TV or music, Smart Sound Mode Adaptive Sound Lite can optimise audio to suit your content*. Features include sound Modes: Bass Boost, Surround Sound Expansion, Game, Adaptive Lite, Standard. Decoding Format features: AAC, MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC, AIFF.

If the form factor of a soundbar isn't a priority - all of these low tier units deliver poor sound compared to the second hand home theatre market.

An AV receiver and 2 font speakers and a centre speaker are all that's needed.

    • +11

lol, no one is dealing with that.
what you're recommending will definitely give you better sound, but if you are looking for a soundbar this is great deal.
most don't have the space for a full system, space is scarce. most won't crank up the sound either do to neighbours in an apartment, condo, etc…
this will more then suffice and give you way better sound then the standalone tv.

most don't have the space for a full system

        Guess you missed this part

If the form factor of a soundbar isn't a priority

        .

won't crank up the sound either

It’s not about volume, it’s about clarity. In a 2.1 setup you don’t have a centre speaker dedicated to dialogue.

The set up time also needs to be considered, and troubleshooting when there are issues. Sound bars like this are just plug n play which make them great for someone that just wants a bit more punch and forward firing speakers.

@PainToad: no need to disrespect our elders.
it would be everyone and anyone with no experience with a sound system, young or old.
We know you feel like you are special with your sound system, but unfortunately most don't care about your system, lol.
sound bar with easy plug and play and improved sound, perfect.

you can only compare it with what you have experience with. most only hear there tv speakers, when they buy this sound bar it will be the greatest thing ever. on top of that they didn't have to pay over $1000. win win

          • +1

@PainToad: There is a reason sound bars have taken over most of the consumer market and its not just because the oldies like them..

I own one of these, thanks to $99 Boxing day Digital Cinema deal, and was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality. Better sound than Sony equivalent HT-S400 as per Rtings. Lack of HDMI is a bummer though.

You can control volume with TV remote but can't turn it on or off with TV remote. Though I noticed that it auto shuts down few minutes after TV is turned off but turns on when I turn on the TV, so no real issue for me.

    • Are you able to give a rough guide on a used AV receiver and speakers that would provide the best quality sound for the same price as this? I’m sure it would be very handy for people reading this thread

      • +2

        Sure

The second hand market is flooded with used hi-fi and home theatre stuff - its a real buyers market.

I just picked up from FB market place a 10 year oldish Yamaha AV receiver - Yamaha is always a solid buy - for $100. I then picked up a fairly ancient JBL home theatre speaker set - for $80 and just used the 2 floor speakers and centre speaker. This all went into a downstairs TV area for the kids. Sounds great! Speakers are placed well and the room responds to floor speakers.

Prices vary obviously, but this stuff stays unsold for a long time so lowballing works.

Stick with know brands, YAMAHA ect…then just google the model number and read reviews. Test them from the seller - check for buzzing sounds with speakers and with receivers flick on and off and listen for pops. Modern AV receivers have better codecs - such as Dolby ATMOS. Going back generations mean these features are lacking. But generally if a receiver has HDMI inputs it will be modern enough.

Subs are an extra - floor speakers do deliver plenty of low end so you can get away without one.

Yamaha receivers have direct mode which turns them into AMPS basically. Pairing them with a WIIM Mini streamer then turns them into very useful Hi Fi setups.

        Hope that helps

    • do you recommend any high quality soundbars (because space is an issue)?

If the form factor of a soundbar isn't a priority - all of these low tier units deliver poor sound compared to hiring an actual orchestra to come to your house and reproduce the classic movie scores for you.

A conductor and 2 rows of musicians are all that's needed

      • +7

PainToad, just quit while you're ahead.

The people interested in this deal, aren't in the market for the top end stuff like bang and olufsen, harman kardon, bose, etc…

this samsung sound bar is a huge upgrade from tv speakers.

        • +1

Yeah, like how Nespresso is a huge upgrade from International Roast.

    • I would prefer more than 2 rows. 7 rows with piano, whole string sections, drums, percussion and an electric guitarist called John Mayer.

      • +1

        Everyone forgets about a triangle…

Does not have hdmi ARC means I cant control with single remote?

    • +1

Yeah - no ARC or CEC means no controlling it with the one remote via the TV.

  • Don't do it to yourselves. Do not buy this rubbish, I beg of you! 3.1 channel at a minimum if you really have to, unless this has some kind of voice clarity mode.

    • +3

What would you recommend at a similar price?

      • +1

Hi, sorry, I don't have any, I don't think there are any available at this price range. 2.1 sound bars serve a purpose, improved sound over TV speakers, but I've gone through two sets of cheap 2.1 sound bars, one an older Sony and another an older Samsung. When watching movies, it's almost infuriating when the dialogue is hardly audible. You have to turn the volume up so much, then the rest of the sound is way too loud. My personal situation no longer requires a sound bar, but have watched movies at friend's with 3.1 channel Samsung one and it is a night and day experience

What I mean is, don't waste your money trying to save money buying this, save up some more/stretch the budget and spend another $100-$200. Yes, the Samsung B650 is over double, but I think it's worth it for that extra channel. Below are some links, can't vouch for the sound quality of the Phillips or Hisense.

        Phillips HTL3320 $244

        Hisense HS312 $275

        Samsung B650 $335

        • It depends on the source, the TV (or actual media player, such as a Chromecast etc), the sound bar, and the overall setup. A 3.1 setup is better of course, but a properly set up / suitably capable 2.1 channel sound bar should not have any issues with low volume dialogue. That indicative of a mixing issue, rather than something that can only be fixed with a centre speaker.

Ideally a 2.1 setup should be playing a premixed 2.1 soundtrack. Or if not available, the TV (or media player) or the sound bar should be configured to be mix 5.1 into 2.1.

A common issue I have seen is the TV / media player thinking the sound bar will mix the 5.1 into 2.1, and the sound bar thinking the TV is doing it. Which results in the centre channel just being left out, and very quiet dialogue.

While basic 2.1 sound bars may not have good mixing, the TV or media player should do it just fine. Sometimes though you need to manually configure it.

  • is this gonna sound better than my z5500 logitech from 10 years ago?

and honestly if I can somehow make the z5500 wireless for the rear speakers I'm happy to use it for another 10 years.

  • Skip Costco online. It's $179 with free delivery via Samsung https://www.samsung.com/au/audio-devices/soundbar/b450-black…

    • +2

I rather deal with Costco or HN for that matter than freaking Samsung themselves.

    • +2

And pay $30 more. No true ozbargainer does that. lol. But you have a point as not everyone has Costco membership. I don't .

  • Does anyone know if JB would price match the costco deal? Ive got a costco membership but JB is 2mins away and costco 35mins away… try and save myself $20 of fuel.
