Seagate Expansion 750GB Portable USB 3.0 - $69

1230

Been looking around for a portable drive recently, this seems to be a pretty good deal for a 750GB drive. JBHiFi are selling the 500GB model for the same price.

  • got these from hardly normal as a replacement for a product that they could not offer as the sales rep gave me wrong info. Happy to get these off my hands for $60. PM me if anyone is interested.

I bought 2 and opened them.
Contained a ST9750422AS appears to be a 7200rpm drive, 9.5mm thick. Works fine in my QNAP SS-839 Pro NAS

    • What was the DOM?

BTW, pretty sure you could have found out these details without opening the drive. Run Crystaldiskinfo.

    • Thanks, just got one for upgrading my laptop's HD.

    • How do you open them? I popped off the rubber feet expecting to see a screw. Nothing.

  • Are 2.5" portable drives able to get power through USB extension cable? The included cables are always short, and I want to extend but some drives I've tried this on, if you use the extension cable it doesn't work.. it turns on then off repeatedly.

    • Depends on a few factors. One being the power-draw of the device, another being the power supply of the USB socket (some older machines, particularly laptops struggle to power 7200rpm drives), another is the (quality/thickness) extension cable… and the final one is the distance rating. USB 2 won't do 5mtrs without an expensive repeater. 2mtrs is very doable, but I found cheap top quality cables (Selby Acoustics iirc). They don't need to be expensive! Most/shops sell cheap crap and/or overpriced retail packaged ones.

  • My DOM 04/2012 is a 7200RPM unit, for reference. Bought from OW Dandenong. There were only 3 units in stock when I got there.

Not sure whether or not I should buy one. Seagate hard drives have a high failure rate don't they? (I've read up on Amazon reviews)

Yes, Seagate have a real image problem these days (due to high faliure rates). That's why deals like this continual pop up.

Don't touch them, is my OPINION.

      • and that's why I didn't buy one.

  • If it is 7200RPOM I am definitely buying for my MBP. Cheaper by about $40 then buying it as a drive alone.

  • Ran Crystaldiskinfo….Model ST9750422AS 7200RPM.

  • Anyone know how to pop open the case?

  • sale over. boohoo i should have bought more than 2.

  • I want to take this drive out of the case without destroying it…any ideas???

I think the clips are designed to break on open.

    • Been in that situation a dozen times. I remind myself why/if I really want it open in the first place… I chuck the case, but keep the board (until I get a better one, like USB3). I've got docks and aftermarket cases. It's a dodgy poor man's case/dock, but it's free. Only use if desperate.
