Seagate Expansion 750GB Portable USB 3.0 - $69

1230

Been looking around for a portable drive recently, this seems to be a pretty good deal for a 750GB drive. JBHiFi are selling the 500GB model for the same price.

  • 5 left at Warr Mall this morning 10am.

    • Grr,, OW is quick to match the price themselves!!.

      • +2

I look forward to the day people actually reward the first store to drop their price… Instead of climbing over them & rewarding the lazy & overpriced stores with price-match. They just sit-back & wait for everyone to talk & buy from them.

  • +1

Great price, even Umart are $99 for this model. Lots of stock around Brisbane. Thanks OP!

  • +1

Good price. I got staff discount at OW, so $65.55.

  • -6

Yay for OW price match - 5% discount!!

  • Good price. I'm tempted to use my Coles staff discount card at OW. Is this special on for a while or is it one of those hourly/daily specials?

  • Can I crack it open and put it in my SATA laptop?

    • I did this just last week with a Verbatim when my lappy hd crapped itself, not sure about this, looking at the specs doesn't tell me much.

edit: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?prod… a reviewer Mark H (last paragraph) says he cracked one open to reveal a SATA ;-)

    • Unlike WD's externals, Seagate doesn't solder the USB board to the drive.

So yes you can open it and place it into your notebook :)

      • I don't have much luck with Seagate than WD :(
but I gonna gamble this time again unless someone find WD similar price?

        • +1

Don't do it. Stick with WD.

        • end up didn't buy it but need one soon

      • I've done this with many external/portable hard drives, and have NEVER encountered this, even with the 5+ WD's that I've done it to. Not sure if this is true.

    • +4

What people haven't mentioned yet is… NO, not really.

Regardless of the possibility of having USB soldered on… 750GB drives are 12.5mm thick, instead of the traditional 9.5mm. Laptops that can take these drives already have these drives.

      We're told 750GB 9.5mm were available
      http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News/Details.aspx?NewsId=272…

I had enough trouble trying to get 640GB 9.5mm drives, never in stock, and price was never flash either.
60GB SSD in the main slot, and 640GB in the DVD->HDD bay adaptor. Happy days.

      • +1

Thanks numnuts, I don't think my drive bay will have the clearance.

  • +7

The question is, can I get it for 25c in the future?

    • YES!

    • i'll take it from you for 25c next week ;)

    • may this weekend

    • Yeah, but by the time you can, you can only fit 1/2 a movie on it. :)

  • 750gig seems so small in this day and age…. But seen as its 2.5" drive at least its true portable.

Its a pity I couldn't just connect something like this straight to the camera to transfer videos while on holiday…

  • -6

    Not a bad price.

A computer shop in Melbourne CBD had 2TB Expansion drives for $99 last week… it was that good I had to buy 2. These were the less portable ones (external power supply) but for that price, who cares!

    • +12

      Apple and Oranges my friend

      • Seagate and Oranges my fiend

    • They're not designed to be portable, and it's purely cost that tempts us to buy them. Play with computers long-enough, and you'll have these drop like flies. NEVER EVER store important data on those external bricks!

Hell, even 'portable' drives, that use laptop drives, can be killed WAY too easily.

      Horses for courses.

      • "'portable' drives, that use laptop drives, can be killed WAY too easily"
What else would they use besides 2.5"? Their never flash media…

        • WAY too many people still using 'external' drives to carry their life's collection of data around. They're begging for trouble. Everything from slight knocks, to plugging in the wrong power brick (same pins/connector, reversed 5v/12v)… it's seriously not worth the risk. As already said, even laptop 'portable' drives can die easily, but it's much safer. TRUE portable: zero moving parts. USB/SDHC/SDXC/SSD…

        • I fail to see how a 2.5" vs 3.5" external drives are any safer. Their both have just as many moving parts.

        • WAY too many people still using 'external' drives to carry their life's collection of data around.

You still didn't say which is best way to store important data and backup, all you say is the worst.

This is indeed tempting. I wonder if Flingshot will offer a better deal?

    • Just for the record PJC is in no way affiliated with Flingshot, other than he had an issue with our ordering system which we sorted out for him. And No I doubt we will be able to come up with a price this aggressive anytime soon, but you never know…

  • finally a damn good price. thanks OP

    • +1

just bought one online From Officeworks plus free delivery. Great :)

  • good price. even goodER price @ OW :)

    • +1

      same price?

      • oh they matched it.. read someone up here got it beaten

  • do seagate HDDs still come with 3 years or 1 year warranty?

is this the newer square box model? or the older curvy one?

    • 3 years warranty

  • +1

nooooo. i bought the 500GB from jb hifi for the same price :(

  • So it is acceptable to wonder if a better deal can be had with Officeworks, but not Flingshot? Is that why I was negged?

    • +1

Don't worry about the "-ve", people just do it because they can. They should not be allowed to rate a post UNLESS they post a response! That will force them to use their "brain" before using the mouse left button…. :-)

BTW, just gave u a "+VE"… just because i can!

  • 7200 RPM ? or the shizen 5400?

    • i want to know too.

    • +1

      5400RPM

    • More problems than benefits. Multiple platters spinning at that speed, heat, power, risks… and for what… bad idea. Hence, why it's not offered.

  • Product Details:

which is slightly bigger than WD my passport
    4.4 x 3.2 x 0.8 inches ; 8.2 ounces

  • Damn, picked up the 500gb last week :(

  • In WA:
Carousel Westfield has none left - shelf is cleaned.
Cannington Sotre - Has whole shelf left.

    • OfficeWorks in Vic Park have heaps

  • -1

Oh, I get it. You negged me because there are only two helipads on my super-yacht in Monaco.

    • +3

You got "negged" for spending time on OzBargain looking for cheap-ass bargains instead of enjoying your yacht… :-)

  • +1

Now if only I could find a Dick Smith store…….

  • These have a 3 year warranty according to the box.
Easy to pull the drive out, the top just pulls off.
Have mine in a 360 at the moment copying files over. Works fine!

    Thanks for the heads up

  • According to ShoppingSquare (assuming they're the same model, pretty sure they are..), they're 5400rpm =\

The funny thing is i got 1TB Samsung drives for $79 from catch of the day 1 year ago :)

    • since then there have been some Thailand floods which have sent HardDrive prices through the roof

there is NO WAY you'd get a 1TB drive for even close to that nowadays

      • +1

The floods were blamed for MUCH more than they did. Quick Googling shows them to be scumbags cashing in on disaster.

        • +1

Its kinda shady if you think about it… 2.5" 1TB drives being $79 a year ago and now they are $120 or so… yes these ones are USB3.0 vs 2.0 but the drives are the same and its been a year! exchange rates haven't changed all that much either

  • Office Works in Fremantle WA had some but they were not advertised (did not even have a price tag)though it scanned for $69 at the counter.

  • Just grabbed one from Glenelg SA, Think there was a few still on the shelf… forgot to count, all i could think about was dinner :P
They were marked as $69, with the 500gb drives right next to them $89.

    • yep - 8 still on the shelf right now

  • Plenty left in Bendigo (Vic) for anyone that's keen on getting one tomorrow.

    • -6

      LOL. Seriously?

If we leave now, we might get there by then.

It's not exactly a capital city.

      • +3

People live in the country too you ignoramus.

        • -5

Use your brain for a second. Vast majority if people are in the capital cities. Even just 2 or 3 of them. I'd love to see even ONE single person who bought from bendigo since that post. It's was friendly, and I had a chuckle at it. No need to get emotional, and not think.

        • I did think. I live in the city and no one replied to my post saying they bought one from the store i said had stock either. Does not mean people havn't.

  • plenty left in Perth CBD store…

  • there were plenty left at the parramatta store
    picked one up myself

  • Is this USB powered?

    • +1

yes, "portable" (2.5'') so usb powered

  • picked one up at Livingston in Canningvale.. had about 10 left at 6.00pm..
    Great price!!!!

    but I have a problem…

connected it up and ran the registration,
but it is only showing 698G in My Computer????? The box says 750G, the back of the HDD shows 750G
but connected up and ran the dashboard, and it shows 698G…..
have I done something wrong, or do I have a dodgy HDD?????
    I want my other 50G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • +1

      698GB = 714,752 MB = 731,906,048 KB = 749,471,793,152 B

      • false advertising!!!!!!!
        I feel robbed!
        :-)

        • +1

I got 128 problems but a byte aint one

    • +3

connect it to a mac.. u get your 50gb back.. :)

      • Ah-hah… I KNEW there was a benefit to using them… just couldn't remember what it was.:p

  • CrystalDiskMark results: http://i.imgur.com/Naq3D.png

  • Grr just bought the 500GB for $69

  • for those already open it, is the hd 9.5mm thick or 12.5mm?

    • Without opening it, I can tell it's a 9.5mm drive. The case is quite thin.

      • -1

The case is 20.3mm is thick. And it's the cheapest available. It's not going to be a 9.5mm drive, I don't think.

        • All the newer momentus laptop drives are 9.5mm thick. Have a look at this link: http://www.seagate.com/internal-hard-drives/laptop-hard-driv…

I also have an older 500gb version of this external drive (that I have opened up), and the case itself is much thicker in order to hold the 12.5mm disk. There is no way a 12.5mm would fit inside a case the size of the 750gb, hence my comment.

  • Just wondering does this just powers from the USB port or does it require it's own power cable etc?

    • +1

      powers from the USB port.

Thanks for posting OP, just bought one from Hurstville DS.
Might be one left if my co-worker didn't end up getting it after I told him about it.

  • Got it for about $89 a few weeks ago. Awesome deal, well done OP!

  • Hurstville Westfields DSE has heaps….

  • Picked 1 up from OW highpoint. They had heaps left.

  • I went past an Officeworks and they had very obvioulsy removed all from the shelf AND the sticker. When I asked the staff looked at each other and stuttered 'ah um they are all gone'.

    Lies!

So I went to DSE and bought 2. :)

  • I like how every Dick Smith deal ends up being a deal with Officeworks who are a bigger beneficiary of competitors deals than the competitors themselves. ;)

    • +1

Over the years I have always found that OfficeWorks remove this type of thing from the shelves and play dumb about stock levels, until such time as the competitor sale is over. Then they mysteriously reappear.

  • -1

I just bought one. It doesnt come with a case. Anyone knows where to get a cheap pouch or case for it.

    • I just bought one on ebay for $3.50.
